Asian Games 2026: Gulveer Singh Leads India’s 10,000m Challenge in High-Quality Field

Gulveer Singh returns to the Asian Games 10,000m final on Friday with a significantly stronger résumé than the one he carried into Hangzhou three years ago. 

The Indian distance runner, who won bronze at the 2022 Asian Games in 2023, enters the Aichi-Nagoya edition as the Indian national record holder over 10,000m, having lowered the mark to 27:00.22. The 25-lap final is scheduled to take place at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium, with Gulveer among a 13-athlete field representing nine National Olympic Committees. The official start list records his personal best at 27:00.22 and his 2026 season best at 27:24.18.

For Gulveer, the race represents another stage in a rapid progression that has taken him from an Asian Games bronze medallist to one of the continent's leading long-distance runners.

Gulveer's previous Asian Games appearance ended with a bronze medal in the 10,000m. At Hangzhou in 2023, he clocked 28:17.21, while teammate Kartik Kumar won silver in 28:15.38. Bahrain's Birhanu Balew claimed gold in 28:13.62. Three years later, Gulveer arrives in Nagoya with a substantially faster personal best.

His breakthrough came at Sound Running's The TEN in California on March 29, 2025, when he ran 27:00.22 to establish a new Indian national record. The performance took more than 41 seconds off the previous national mark held by his coach Surendra Singh. The 27:00.22 mark placed Gulveer among the leading Asian 10,000m runners and demonstrated the scale of his improvement since his previous Asian Games appearance.

Gulveer's progress was not limited to one fast race. At the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea, he won the men's 10,000m in 28:38.63. He followed that up by winning the 5,000m in 13:24.77, setting a championship record in the process.

The double highlighted Gulveer's ability to compete successfully across both long-distance events and showed that his development was translating into championship performances rather than being restricted to record-setting races. His 2026 season has added further significant performances. The Indian has recorded an indoor 5,000m national record of 12:59.77, a half-marathon time of 59:42, and a 27:24.18 season best over 10,000m. He also won silver in the 10,000m at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, finishing in 27:49.78.

Gulveer Faces a Strong Asian Field

The Indian will have to contend with several accomplished distance runners in Nagoya. Defending Asian Games champion Birhanu Balew of Bahrain returns to defend his 10,000m title. Balew won both the 5,000 m and 10,000 m at Hangzhou and owns a 10,000 m personal best of 27:07.49.

He also comes into the competition after winning the 5,000m at the Brussels Diamond League Final on September 11, 2026, in 12:45.70, a performance listed as a world-leading time and Asian record. Japan's Yamato Yoshii adds another dimension to the field. Born in Aichi Prefecture and representing Toyota Motor Corporation, Yoshii has a 10,000m personal best of 27:21.45, recorded in November 2025. His presence also gives the host nation a prominent contender in front of a home crowd.

China's Wang Wenjie is another important challenger. The 22-year-old set a Chinese national record of 27:47.53 in Yokohama in May 2026, improving his own previous mark.

One of the most notable aspects of Gulveer's development has been his ability to sustain high speeds over extended distances. His training has included altitude blocks in Colorado Springs, while his international competition schedule has exposed him to different racing environments and tactical situations.
