Indian pole vaulter Baranica Elangovan continued her remarkable rise in Indian athletics by setting yet another national record in the women’s pole vault, clearing 4.23m at the Indian Indoor Open Combined Events and Pole Vault competition in Bhubaneswar.

Just weeks after becoming the first Indian woman to clear 4.22m, Baranica returned to the familiar surroundings of Kalinga Stadium and once again rewrote the national record books. The latest mark of 4.23m improved her own previous national record by one centimetre and further established her as the undisputed leader of Indian women’s pole vault. More importantly, it reinforced the sense that Indian women’s pole vault is entering a completely new phase.

The Bhubaneswar venue has now become synonymous with Baranica’s breakthrough performances. It was here earlier this season that she first created history with the 4.22m clearance, and it was at the same stadium that she managed to push the record even further. The consistency of her progress is perhaps the most impressive aspect.

Baranica began the competition confidently, clearing the early heights smoothly and looking increasingly comfortable with every attempt. She opened her campaign with a successful clearance at 3.80m on her very first attempt, immediately showing the rhythm and composure that have defined her performances this season. As the bar kept rising, so did her confidence.

When the height was raised to 4.23m, Baranica delivered once again, producing a successful clearance that sparked celebrations inside the stadium. The achievement added another chapter to what has already become a breakthrough season for the young vaulter.

She was not finished there.

After breaking the national record, Baranica attempted 4.30m a height that would have represented another massive leap forward for Indian athletics. While she could not clear it on this occasion, the attempt itself reflected the growing ambition and belief surrounding her performances. For Indian athletics, the significance of Baranica’s rise goes beyond just numbers.

Women’s pole vault has traditionally remained a relatively underdeveloped discipline in India compared to global standards. The event requires not only technical excellence and physical explosiveness, but also access to specialised coaching infrastructure and high-level equipment areas where Indian athletics has often lagged behind stronger international programs.

But Baranica’s performances this year suggest that the gap is slowly beginning to close.

Under the guidance of coach Milber Russell, she has shown steady technical improvements in approach speed, take-off timing and body control over the bar. Her consistency at higher heights now indicates that her earlier national record was not a one-off performance but part of sustained progression. The trajectory is extremely encouraging.

Clearing 4.22m itself had already placed her among Asia’s emerging pole vault names. Now, with 4.23m and repeated attempts above that range, the focus naturally shifts toward bigger continental competitions ahead, particularly the 2026 Asian Games.

The mental side of her performances has also stood out.

Pole vault is among the most psychologically demanding events in athletics. Athletes often spend long periods waiting between attempts, dealing with pressure as the bar rises incrementally. A single failed attempt can quickly disrupt rhythm and confidence. Baranica, however, has looked increasingly composed in high-pressure situations.

Her ability to return to the same stadium where she had already set a national record and then improve upon it again reflects growing maturity as a competitor. Rather than being satisfied with the earlier mark, she came back aiming to go even higher. That hunger for progression is exactly what Indian athletics needs from its emerging generation.

The timing of her rise is also important.

Indian athletics has recently witnessed encouraging breakthroughs across jumps and field events, with athletes beginning to push national standards higher across multiple disciplines. Baranica’s performances add another layer to that growing momentum. What makes her achievements even more impressive is the speed of improvement.

Pole vault progression is usually gradual because the event combines sprinting mechanics, gymnastics, coordination and technical precision. Improvements of even a few centimetres can often take months or years at elite level. Yet Baranica has managed to raise the national record twice within a short span at the same venue.

That suggests there may still be more room for growth.

The attempted 4.30m clearance, though unsuccessful, showed that she is already thinking beyond the current national benchmark. With continued technical refinement, stronger international exposure and consistent competition at higher standards, the possibility of pushing toward even bigger marks cannot be ruled out. For now, though, Bhubaneswar once again belonged to Baranica Elangovan. Kalinga Stadium has become the stage for her transformation from a promising domestic athlete into the national record holder and face of Indian women’s pole vault. Every time she has stepped onto the runway there this season, she has managed to leave with something bigger.

Another national record, another statement performance and another reminder that Indian pole vault is steadily reaching new heights.
