Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto cruised into the BWF World Championships 2026 Round of 16, while Satwik-Chirag advanced after a walkover in Delhi.

India’s doubles campaign gained early momentum at the BWF World Championships 2026 in New Delhi, with mixed doubles pair Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto registering a dominant victory while men’s doubles stars Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the Round of 16 following a walkover.

On Day 3 of the World Championships, 15th-seeded Dhruv and Tanisha produced one of India’s most comfortable wins of the tournament so far, defeating Macau’s Leong Iok Chong and Weng Chi Ng 21-11, 21-11 in just 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, World No. 5 Satwik and Chirag moved directly into the Round of 16 after their Scottish opponents Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle withdrew from their Round of 32 match due to injury concerns. The contrasting routes have ensured that both Indian pairs are now into the pre-quarterfinal stage as the World Championships return to India for the first time in 17 years.

Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto entered their opening match as favourites, and the Indian pair ensured there was no room for an upset. The 15th seeds controlled the contest against Leong Iok Chong and Weng Chi Ng from the start, winning both games by an identical 21-11 margin. The match lasted only 30 minutes, with the Indians using their superior pace and attacking combinations to keep their opponents under pressure.

For Dhruv and Tanisha, the victory was an important confidence boost at a home World Championships where expectations will naturally be higher. The Indian pair has developed into one of the country’s most consistent mixed doubles combinations and will now face a significantly tougher challenge in the Round of 16.

Their next opponents are sixth-seeded Chinese pair Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui, one of the strongest combinations in the draw. The upcoming match will also offer Dhruv and Tanisha an opportunity to reverse a recent result. The Indians had lost a close encounter against Guo and Chen in the Round of 32 at the China Open, making the World Championships clash an immediate chance for redemption.

The Chinese pair arrive with strong recent form, including their title-winning run at the China Open, and will start as favourites. However, Dhruv and Tanisha will take confidence from the way they handled their opening match in Delhi. A victory over the sixth seeds would represent one of the biggest results of their World Championships campaign and put them into the quarterfinals.

Satwik-Chirag advance without taking the court

India’s biggest medal hopes in men’s doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, were also scheduled to begin their campaign on Day 3. However, Indian fans will have to wait longer to see the pair in action. Satwik and Chirag received a walkover after Scotland’s Alexander Dunn and Adam Pringle withdrew from their Round of 32 match.

Dunn had reportedly picked up an injury earlier in the day during his mixed doubles match, where he was competing alongside Julie MacPherson. The injury forced the Scottish player out of the men’s doubles contest as well, leading to the withdrawal of the pair. The Indian duo had already received a bye in the opening round.

As a result, Satwik and Chirag have now progressed directly into the Round of 16 without playing a single point. While the walkover ensures that the pair will be physically fresh for the next round, it also creates a potential concern. At a major tournament, match rhythm can be crucial. Satwik and Chirag will now enter their first competitive match of the World Championships directly against higher-quality opposition, without having the benefit of an opening-round contest to settle into the conditions.

That lack of match practice can occasionally become a factor, particularly in men’s doubles where momentum, pace and court timing are critical.

Despite the unusual start to their campaign, Satwik and Chirag remain among India’s strongest contenders for a medal at the World Championships. The pair have already established themselves among the elite combinations in world badminton and arrive in Delhi as two-time World Championships medallists and reigning Asian Games champions.

Their World No. 5 ranking also reflects their standing among the top men’s doubles teams in the world. The pressure, however, will be different at home.

A World Championships in Delhi presents a rare opportunity for Satwik and Chirag to compete for a medal in front of Indian supporters. Their experience in major tournaments will be crucial as they attempt to convert that opportunity into another podium finish. Their opening match in the Round of 16 will therefore be closely watched, not only for the result but also for how quickly they find their rhythm after the walkover.

Momentum builds for India’s doubles campaign

The early results have given India a positive start in doubles on Day 3. Dhruv and Tanisha have earned their place in the Round of 16 through an impressive on-court performance. Satwik and Chirag, meanwhile, have advanced without taking the court.

Both pairs now face the challenge of converting early progress into deeper runs. For Dhruv and Tanisha, the test is clear: overcoming the sixth-seeded Chinese pair Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui. For Satwik and Chirag, the challenge will be to shake off any rust and immediately find their best level when they finally step onto the court.

With the BWF World Championships back in India after 17 years, the stakes are high.

India’s doubles players have made a promising start. The tougher tests, however, are now just beginning.
