East Bengal vs SC Delhi: High-Scoring Battle for a Place in Durand Cup Final

East Bengal face high-scoring SC Delhi in the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup semifinal on August 19, with a place in the final at stake in Kolkata.
East Bengal FC will look to take another step towards their first title of the season when they face SC Delhi in the first semifinal of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Wednesday, August 19.
The semifinal, scheduled for 7:00 PM IST, brings together two of the tournament's most impressive sides, but with contrasting identities. East Bengal have built their campaign around defensive discipline and control, while SC Delhi have emerged as the competition's most prolific attacking team.
With a place in the final at stake, the contest promises to be one of the most intriguing matches of the tournament. All 43 matches of the Durand Cup are being broadcast live on the Sony Sports Network and streamed on SonyLIV.
East Bengal have scored 14 goals in the tournament while conceding just once. That solitary goal came in their opening Group A match, a 0-1 defeat to Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Since then, the Red and Golds have produced four consecutive clean sheets, underlining the defensive transformation that has followed their opening setback.
They responded to that defeat by thrashing CISF Protectors 8-0 and South United FC 5-0 before producing a more controlled 1-0 victory against Indian Army FT in the quarter-final. That consistency has taken East Bengal into the semifinal and established them as one of the most difficult teams to break down in the competition.
Head coach Antonio López Habas has traditionally built his teams around defensive organisation, tactical discipline and compactness, while ensuring that his sides can transition quickly after winning possession. That approach will face its biggest test yet against SC Delhi.
If East Bengal has been defined by defensive solidity, SC Delhi have made headlines through their extraordinary attacking numbers. The Delhi side have scored 21 goals in four matches, comfortably the highest tally in the tournament, while conceding only three. They began their Group C campaign with a 2-1 victory over Jamshedpur FC before producing back-to-back seven-goal performances against Defenders FC and Indian Air Force FT.
Their attacking momentum continued into the quarter-final, where they recovered from an early setback to defeat FC Raengdai 5-1. That combination of attacking efficiency and defensive organisation has made SC Delhi one of the standout teams of the competition. The challenge now is whether they can reproduce that attacking fluency against an East Bengal side that has conceded just once.
Rodriguinho is the danger man.
SC Delhi's attacking threat begins with Rodriguinho, the tournament's leading scorer with seven goals. The 25-year-old Brazilian, whose full name is Rodrigo Araújo da Silva Filho, joined the club ahead of the competition and has quickly established himself as one of the most dangerous forwards in the Durand Cup. Comfortable playing as a second striker or from the right flank, Rodriguinho combines direct running with movement and finishing ability.
His seven goals underline his importance, but SC Delhi's attacking strength does not depend entirely on one player. Lalrinliana Hnamte has also made a significant contribution, including two goals during the comeback victory over Jamshedpur FC.
That attacking depth could prove important if East Bengal manages to limit Rodriguinho's influence.
East Bengal also has a proven match-winner in attack. PV Vishnu has scored four times in the competition, including a hat-trick in the 8-0 victory over CISF Protectors. He was also decisive in the quarter-final, scoring the only goal against Indian Army FT with a header to send East Bengal into the last four. Alongside Vishnu, Spanish midfielder Dani Ramírez has emerged as an important creative presence.
Ramírez operates between midfield and attack, helping East Bengal progress possession and unlock defensive blocks. Mohammed Basim Rashid provides another attacking option. East Bengal therefore have the tools to hurt SC Delhi, but the bigger question could be how they balance their attacking ambitions with the defensive structure that has carried them this far.
For SC Delhi, reaching the semifinal is already a significant achievement. Head coach Tomasz Tchórz acknowledged the importance of the occasion, particularly for a club that is still in its formative years.
“For our club, Sporting Club Delhi, this is a historic achievement because we are a newly created club. This is one of the first semi-finals, or perhaps the first semi-final, for the club. But we want more,” Tchórz said.
His team now has an opportunity to go even further and reach the Durand Cup final. The coach also understands the challenge of facing East Bengal in Kolkata.Playing against one of India's most historic clubs in a city renowned for its football culture means SC Delhi are likely to face a hostile atmosphere at the Salt Lake Stadium.
Tchórz expects the crowd to overwhelmingly support the home side but believes the occasion itself will be an important experience for his players. While East Bengal and SC Delhi do not share the traditional rivalry associated with Kolkata football, the setting gives the semifinal an added dimension. East Bengal captain Mohammed Rashid has urged supporters to fill the stadium after the club fell short of reaching last season's final.
“We still regret missing out on the Durand Cup final last season. However, it's a brilliant opportunity for us to go a step further and win our first title of the season,” Rashid said.
The home support could become an important factor, particularly if the match remains close into the second half.
The semifinal ultimately presents a fascinating tactical battle. SC Delhi have scored seven goals in each of their last two group matches and another five in the quarter-final. East Bengal, meanwhile, have gone four consecutive matches without conceding.

The question is simple: Can SC Delhi's attacking fluency break East Bengal's defensive wall?
Or will Habas's compact structure frustrate the Delhi attack and allow East Bengal to exploit spaces on the counter? With both sides possessing quality in the final third, individual moments could decide the contest. One team has the tournament's best attacking record. The other has one of its strongest defensive records.
On Wednesday night in Kolkata, only one will earn a place in the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup final.
