Indian badminton enjoyed an encouraging opening day at the Malaysia Masters 2026 as men’s doubles pair Hariharan Amsakarunan and M.R. Arjun produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament

By defeating seventh-seeded French brothers Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov in straight games to reach the Round of 16 in Kuala Lumpur. The Indian pair, currently ranked World No. 31, delivered a composed and tactically mature performance to beat the Popov brothers 21-19, 21-15 in a result that immediately became one of the standout wins for India this season in men’s doubles.

Against a pair known for their speed, sharp flat exchanges, and relentless attacking pressure, Hariharan and Arjun showed impressive resilience and control particularly during crucial moments of the opening game.

The turning point came late in the first game. Trailing 16-19 and under heavy pressure, the Indian pair looked close to losing momentum against the experienced French duo. But instead of panicking, Hariharan and Arjun slowed the pace intelligently, tightened their defensive positioning, and began forcing errors from the Popovs. What followed was one of the best stretches of badminton the Indian pair has produced together.

They won five consecutive points to steal the opening game 21-19, completely shifting the momentum of the contest. That comeback visibly frustrated the French pair.

From there, Hariharan and Arjun played with increasing confidence in the second game, controlling the midcourt exchanges and repeatedly finding sharp angles to disrupt the Popovs’ attacking rhythm. The Indians eventually closed out the second game 21-15 to complete a famous straight-games victory.

The significance of the win extends beyond just rankings. Christo and Toma Junior Popov have established themselves as one of Europe’s strongest badminton sibling partnerships over recent seasons. Their aggressive style, speed around the net, and attacking transitions have troubled several top Asian pairs on the BWF World Tour. For Hariharan and Arjun to defeat them in straight games at a Super 500 event marks a major statement.

The result is also important for India’s men’s doubles depth. With Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty absent from the tournament after their Thailand Open final run, the spotlight naturally shifted toward India’s secondary doubles combinations. Hariharan and Arjun responded emphatically. The performance showed that India’s men’s doubles structure may finally be developing stronger depth beneath the country’s top-ranked pair.

India also received positive news in women’s singles qualification. Ashmita Chaliha fought back strongly to defeat Chinese Taipei’s Pai Yu Po in three games and qualify for the main draw of the Malaysia Masters. After narrowly losing the opening game 21-23, Ashmita displayed excellent mental composure to recover and win the next two games 21-16, 21-16. The comeback highlighted the Assamese shuttler’s growing maturity on the international circuit.

Ashmita has struggled with consistency over the last two seasons, but performances like this continue to show why many within Indian badminton still view her as a player capable of becoming a regular BWF World Tour contender. She will now face either Chen Su Yu of Chinese Taipei or Indonesia’s Thalita Ramadhani Wiryawan in the Round of 32.

Not all results went India’s way, however. Aakarshi Kashyap suffered a painful qualifying defeat against Korea’s Park Ga Eun after a closely contested three-game battle lasting over an hour. The Indian lost 21-15, 20-22, 7-21 despite holding match points in the second game before Park forced a decider and eventually dominated the third. The result continues a frustrating return period for Aakarshi, who is still searching for rhythm after injury interruptions earlier this year. Nevertheless, her ability to push strong Asian opposition deep into matches remains encouraging ahead of a crucial season.

India’s mixed doubles combination of Sathwik Reddy Kanapuram and Radhika Sharma also progressed through qualification with a solid straight-games victory over Malaysia’s Datu Anif Isaac Datu Asrah and Clarissa San. The Indian pair won 21-15, 21-17 and will now face Alexander Dunn and Julie Macpherson in the main draw.

Mixed doubles remains one of India’s least developed disciplines internationally, making every breakthrough at Super 500 events especially valuable for long-term growth.

The Malaysia Masters carries extra importance this year because several senior Indian stars chose to skip the tournament for workload management and recovery ahead of the World Championships and Asian Games preparation phase. That created opportunities for younger and secondary-line players to step forward.

Indian badminton’s future may still revolve around elite stars like Lakshya Sen and Satwik-Chirag, but performances like this show that the next layer of players is beginning to grow in confidence too.

And if Hariharan and Arjun continue playing at this level, the Malaysia Masters 2026 could become a breakthrough tournament for the Indian pair.
