HCL-SRFI PSA Challenger Tournament Returns to Mumbai as India's Asian Games Stars Lead Strong International Field
Mumbai is set to host another major international squash event as the HCL-SRFI PSA Challenger Tournament gets underway at the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana (JVPG) Club from June 29 to July 3, 2026.
Featuring 48 players from 15 countries, the tournament promises five days of high-quality competition while offering crucial PSA ranking points for players aiming to climb the professional circuit.
The event will feature separate men's and women's PSA Challenger tournaments, each carrying a prize purse of USD 15,000, attracting a competitive international field alongside India's leading squash stars. Among them, Velavan Senthilkumar and Tanvi Khanna, both currently ranked No. 3 in India, will spearhead the country's challenge as they continue preparations for the 2026 Asian Games.
The tournament was officially announced during a press conference at the host venue on Monday. The event was attended by officials from the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club, representatives of the Squash Racquets Federation of India (SRFI), India's National Head Coach Harinderpal Sandhu, and several leading players participating in the competition.
The men's draw will be led by Hong Kong's Alex Lau, who enters the tournament as the top seed. India's Velavan Senthilkumar, currently ranked World No. 50, has been seeded second and will be among the favourites to challenge for the title on home soil. Egypt's Yasin Shohdy has been seeded third, followed by Brazil's Diego Gobbi in fourth place. Another Indian hopeful, Suraj Kumar Chand, has secured the seventh seed and will also look to make a deep run in front of home supporters.
The women's competition is equally competitive. South Africa's Hayley Ward heads the seedings, while Egypt's Farida Walid occupies the second spot. India's Tanvi Khanna, currently ranked World No. 75, enters as the third seed and will be one of the country's strongest medal contenders.
The top eight in the women's draw also includes Spain's Noa Romero, Egypt's Nour Khafagy and Malak Fathy, along with Japan's Akari Midorikawa and Risa Sugimoto, ensuring a highly competitive tournament from the opening round.
While the prize money is significant, the tournament's importance extends well beyond financial rewards. PSA Challenger events offer valuable world ranking points that can dramatically influence qualification for larger international tournaments throughout the season. Speaking during the launch, Indian National Head Coach Harinderpal Sandhu highlighted the significance of hosting events of this level within the country.
According to Sandhu, tournaments like the HCL-SRFI PSA Challenger provide Indian players with an excellent opportunity to earn ranking points without the additional costs of travelling overseas. Improving rankings remains essential for gaining direct entry into bigger PSA events around the world.
For several members of India's national squad, strong performances in Mumbai could play an important role in shaping the remainder of their international season.
Although the immediate objective is success at the Challenger tournament, India's preparations are firmly centred on the 2026 Asian Games. Velavan Senthilkumar, Tanvi Khanna and Suraj Kumar Chand have all been selected to represent India at the continental showpiece later this year. Harinderpal Sandhu, himself an Asian Games gold medallist, expressed confidence in India's prospects.
He revealed that the team's ultimate ambition extends beyond simply winning medals.
India's primary target is to secure the men's and women's singles gold medals, achievements that would also guarantee automatic qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, where squash will make its long-awaited Olympic debut.
Sandhu acknowledged that the challenge would be difficult given the strength of Asian squash, particularly from countries like Egypt's expatriate-trained players, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Japan, but remained optimistic about India's preparations.
The tournament will be hosted at one of Mumbai's premier sporting venues. The Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club boasts three air-conditioned glass-backed squash courts, with two designated for competition and one reserved exclusively for practice sessions. Players will also have access to the club's state-of-the-art gymnasium and swimming pool, ensuring optimal recovery and training facilities throughout the week.
To welcome the international contingent, JVPG will also host a gala dinner for players and officials on June 30, reflecting the club's commitment to providing a memorable experience for participants from around the world.
Speaking at the press conference, Jayesh Choksi, President of JVPG, emphasised the club's long-standing commitment to hosting national and international sporting events. He noted that the club possesses some of Mumbai's finest sporting infrastructure and assured participants that every effort would be made to deliver an exceptional tournament experience. According to Choksi, the organisers have focused on meeting every international standard required for an event of this stature while extending a warm welcome to players and officials from across the globe.
