The Indian Women's Hockey Team produced a commanding performance at the FIH Hockey World Cup Belgium & Netherlands 2026, defeating South Africa 6-1 at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen on Tuesday to register their first win of the tournament.

After opening their campaign with a 2-2 draw against 2024 Olympic silver medallists China, India delivered a far more clinical attacking performance against South Africa. Six different players found the net as India combined speed, penalty-corner efficiency and incisive attacking movement to move to the top of Pool D on goal difference.

With four points from two matches, India remain unbeaten and have put themselves in a strong position to progress to the next stage of the World Cup.

India made their attacking intentions clear from the opening minutes, moving the ball quickly through midfield and repeatedly looking to penetrate the South African circle. South Africa created the first major opportunity in the fourth minute when Kayla de Waal found herself through on goal. Indian goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam stood tall, making an important save to keep the scores level.

India immediately responded. Salima Tete drove forward on the right before finding Sunelita Toppo, whose effort was saved by South African goalkeeper Marlise van Tonder.

India continued to apply pressure and earned their first penalty corner in the seventh minute after Baljeet Kaur's work down the left resulted in a South African foot inside the circle. Deepika took the drag-flick, but van Tonder produced a full-length save to deny the Indian effort. The pressure eventually told in the 11th minute.

India patiently worked the ball around the South African circle before an attempt from Sakshi Rana found its way towards the far post. Sunelita Toppo was alert to the opportunity and provided the decisive touch to put India 1-0 ahead.

Navneet and Sushila extend India's advantage

India were briefly reduced to 10 players in the 15th minute after Ishika Chaudhary received a green card. However, the numerical disadvantage did little to disrupt India's rhythm. At the start of the second quarter, Savita took over in goal, and India continued to attack with purpose.

The second goal arrived in the 17th minute through an excellent penalty-corner variation. Navneet Kaur changed the angle before unleashing a low and powerful slap hit that found the backboard, giving India a 2-0 advantage. The Indian attack continued to operate in waves, with Navneet, Neha and Deepika combining effectively around the circle.

India earned another penalty corner in the 24th minute after Navneet found space inside the attacking area. The resulting sequence eventually produced another set piece.

India converted again in the 25th minute. Deepika's drag-flick took a deflection off the first South African rusher before the ball fell kindly for Sushila Chanu, who produced the decisive touch to make it 3-0. South Africa struggled to find a response as India controlled large portions of the opening 30 minutes and went into half-time with a commanding three-goal lead.

India returned from the interval with the same attacking intent. The midfield moved the ball quickly, while Salima and the Indian forwards repeatedly stretched the South African defensive structure. The fourth goal arrived in the 38th minute following another excellent attacking move. Navneet exchanged passes with Baljeet on the left before the ball was cut back towards Deepika

The Indian forward controlled it on her backhand and unleashed a powerful tomahawk into the bottom far corner. Van Tonder had no chance.

India were now 4-0 ahead and firmly in control. The third quarter then turned into a goal rush. In the 44th minute, Lalremsiami received an aerial ball from Neha inside the circle. She cut onto her reverse and fired towards the far post, with the effort finding its way past the goalkeeper to make it 5-0.

India needed just another minute to score again. Salima carried the ball forward on the right before finding Ishika, whose effort struck the post. Sakshi Rana reacted quickest to the rebound and sent a powerful reverse hit into the top corner.

India had six. Even more impressively, the six goals had been scored by six different players, highlighting the variety within India's attacking unit.

South Africa score a consolation goal

India entered the final quarter with a 6-0 advantage and understandably reduced the intensity. South Africa continued to fight and eventually found their first goal of the World Cup in the 55th minute. A penalty corner created the opportunity. A drag-flick from Pearce took a deflection off the first Indian rusher before Kayla de Waal reacted fastest at the far post to reduce the deficit to 1-6.

The goal gave South Africa something to celebrate after their 4-0 defeat to England in their opening match. India, however, remained composed and comfortably managed the closing stages. The final score read India 6-1 South Africa.

The victory gives India four points from two matches and puts them at the top of Pool D on goal difference. The result is especially important after the 2-2 draw against China in the opening game. India now have one win and one draw, remaining unbeaten while significantly improving their goal difference.

The team will conclude its pool campaign against England on August 20. That match will provide another major test, but India can approach it with considerable confidence after producing their most complete performance of the tournament so far. The victory over South Africa was built on attacking variety, strong penalty-corner execution and contributions from across the team.

Six different scorers, six goals and three points have put India in an excellent position.

Now, with England awaiting in the final Pool D match, India will look to carry this momentum forward and turn an unbeaten start into a place in the next stage of the World Cup.
