India vs Iran: India Suffer Straight-Sets Defeat Despite Fighting Second Set at AVC Asian Volleyball Championship

India suffered another straight-sets defeat at the AVC Asian Volleyball Championship, going down 20-25, 26-28, 18-25 against Iran in a contest that saw the Indian team produce a spirited fight in the second set but ultimately fall short against a dominant Iranian side.

The defeat was particularly disappointing for India because the team came within touching distance of taking the second set. After losing the opening game 20-25, India battled back strongly and created multiple set-point opportunities in a dramatic second set. However, Iran held its nerve to win 28-26 and then took control of the third set to complete a 3-0 victory.

The result also continued Iran's unbeaten record against India, with the Iranians maintaining their clean head-to-head record in the encounters between the two teams.

Iran immediately put India under pressure in the opening set. The Iranian side opened the contest with two quick blocks before extending its advantage to 3-0. An ace then made it 4-0, forcing India to call an early timeout.

India eventually got on the scoreboard through Chirag, who had been India's top scorer with 16 points in the previous match. Amit then helped India stay within touching distance, while the Indian attack began finding ways through the Iranian defence.

However, Iran's attacking quality continued to make the difference. Poriya repeatedly caused problems from the left corner, while Haji was effective from the opposite side. Iran moved into a 10-4 advantage before India began trying to close the gap.

India did produce some encouraging moments. Amit found the hands of the Iranian blockers with one powerful attack, while a successful challenge gave India another point after the ball was shown to have brushed the blockers before going out.

Still, Iran maintained control and eventually reached set point at 24-18. India saved two set points through Shikhar and another attacking effort from Amit, but Poriya eventually finished the job for Iran as the first set ended 25-20.

India fight back in thrilling second set

The second set was a completely different contest. India started much better and briefly moved ahead, with Amit getting through the Iranian double block before Chirag produced an ace to make it 3-1. Iran responded, but India continued to challenge the hosts throughout the set.

Jerome became particularly influential for India, repeatedly finding openings from the right corner. Chirag and Shikhar also contributed crucial points as India stayed level with Iran through the middle stages. At 9-9, neither side could establish control. Iran relied heavily on Morteza, Haji and Poriya, while India continued to find answers through its attacking game.

The set remained extremely close. India moved ahead 16-14 after an ace from Om, while Jerome and John continued to produce important attacking points. Iran responded immediately, bringing the score level at 16-16.

From there, the contest turned into a tense battle. India eventually moved to 22-19 after superb defensive work and a powerful swing from Amit. Iran called a timeout, but India reached 26-25 and secured another set point after Haji hit wide.

Iran saved it.

At 26-26, Haji levelled again before Poriya produced an ace to give Iran its first set point. India challenged the next play, claiming a net touch, but the challenge was unsuccessful.

Iran finally closed out the marathon second set 28-26.

Having survived India's strongest period of the match, Iran began the third set with renewed authority. India took the opening point through Chirag, but Iran quickly responded and established a 5-1 advantage. A strong block from Ali then extended the lead, and Iran reached 10-4 before India called another timeout.

India continued to fight. Amit, Jerome, John and Chirag all produced moments of quality, but Iran's blocking and attacking efficiency kept the Indian side at arm's length.

Poriya once again proved difficult to contain, finding spaces in the Indian court with well-placed attacks. Haji also continued to contribute, while Iran's blocks repeatedly disrupted India's attempts to build momentum. Iran eventually moved to 20-12 and then 24-15, leaving India facing 10 match points.

India saved several of them.

A brilliant cross-court smash from Amit made it 15-23, while double blocks from India prevented Iran from immediately finishing the match. Another block reduced the deficit further before an Iranian service error made it 16-24.

But the comeback was ultimately too late.

After India saved two more match points, an Iranian drop finally ended the contest at 25-18.

The final scoreline was a straight-sets defeat, but India's performance in the second set offered plenty of encouragement. The team had multiple opportunities to take the game and force Iran into a different kind of contest. Leading 26-25, India needed just one more point to finally win its first set of the tournament, but Iran remained composed under pressure.

Instead, Iran took the set 28-26 and carried that momentum into the decider.

For India, the defeat marks another difficult result, but the second-set performance showed the team can compete with Iran when its attack, defence and blocking come together. The challenge now will be to turn those promising passages into sustained performances across an entire match.

For Iran, meanwhile, the 25-20, 28-26, 25-18 victory ensured another commanding result and extended its unbeaten record against India.

India will have to regroup quickly as it looks to bounce back from another straight-sets loss at the AVC Asian Volleyball Championship.
