ISSF World Cup Munich 2026: Samrat Rana, Arjun Babuta Lead India’s Challenge on Opening Day

The prestigious ISSF World Cup Rifle/Pistol Munich leg gets underway on Tuesday, May 26, with India opening its campaign in two of the most competitive Olympic shooting events the men’s 10m Air Pistol and men’s 10m Air Rifle.
Traditionally regarded as one of the marquee stops on the international shooting calendar, the Munich World Cup once again features an elite field, with 696 shooters from 80 countries competing at the Olympiaschießanlage in Germany. For India, the event represents another important test in the early phase of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic cycle, with a 22-member squad featuring a mix of experienced internationals and emerging talent.
Samrat Rana Leads Air Pistol Challenge
India’s biggest medal hope on the opening day in the 10m Air Pistol event will be Samrat Rana. The reigning world champion enters the competition after a relatively limited international season so far but remains one of the strongest pistol shooters in global competition. Earlier this year, Samrat secured bronze at the Asian Championships in New Delhi, underlining his consistency at major events.
In Munich, he will be joined by Sharvan Kumar and debutant Ajendra Singh Chauhan. For Sharvan, the tournament marks a return to the World Cup stage after a three-year gap. The Indian shooter had narrowly missed a podium finish at the Asian Championships and will look to regain momentum against one of the deepest fields of the season.
Ajendra, meanwhile, faces the challenge of making his senior World Cup debut under intense international pressure. Munich has historically been one of the toughest environments in world shooting because of the field quality and expectations attached to the event.
The level of competition in the men’s 10m Air Pistol event will be exceptionally high. China’s Hu Kai enters as one of the favourites after dominating the World Cup circuit last season, winning gold medals at all four World Cups along with the World Cup Final title. He also finished behind Samrat Rana at the World Championships, adding another layer to their growing rivalry. The field also includes 19-year-old Chinese talent Bu Shuaihang, who won gold in Granada earlier this year, alongside several Olympic and World Championship medallists.
German legend Christian Reitz remains one of the most respected names in pistol shooting, while Italy’s Federico Nilo Maldini and Paolo Monna arrive after strong Olympic performances in Paris. Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec, who became globally recognised during the Paris Olympics, is also part of the lineup alongside Brazil’s Felipe Almeida Wu. With 153 athletes competing in the event, even qualification for the final will require extremely high consistency.
Arjun Babuta Headlines Air Rifle Squad
In the men’s 10m Air Rifle event, India’s challenge will be spearheaded by Olympian Arjun Babuta. Arjun began the 2026 season strongly with a gold medal at the Asian Championships and continues to establish himself among India’s leading rifle shooters. He will be accompanied by former Junior World Champion Parth Rakesh Mane and Shahu Tushar Mane, while Rudrankksh Patil and Himanshu Dhillon will compete for ranking points.
India’s rifle squad enters Munich facing one of the strongest international fields assembled this season.
The biggest name in the competition remains China’s Sheng Lihao, currently regarded as one of the world’s dominant rifle shooters. World Champion Maximilian Dallinger of Germany will also compete on home soil, while several globally elite rifle shooters are expected to challenge for medals. Among them are Hungary’s Istavan Peni Marton, Italy’s Danilo Dennis Sollazzo, Czech shooter Jiri Privratsky, Kazakhstan’s Islam Satpayev, Norway’s Jon-Hermann Hegg and Sweden’s Victor Lindgren.
The field also includes experienced veterans like Croatia’s Petar Gorsa and Ukraine’s Serhii Kulish, making qualification itself a major challenge.
One of the most important aspects of India’s Munich squad is the inclusion of several young shooters making their transition into senior international competition. Suraj Sharma, Sakshi Padekar, Ajendra Singh Chauhan and Udhayveer Sidhu are among the four senior World Cup debutants in the Indian contingent. For these athletes, Munich offers exposure to the highest level of competition in the sport. Competing alongside Olympic champions and world record holders provides a critical learning environment during the early stages of their senior careers.
Opening Day Schedule
The men’s 10m Air Pistol qualification begins at 12:30 IST, with the final scheduled for 17:30 IST.
The men’s 10m Air Rifle qualification starts at 17:00 IST, while the final will take place at 22:00 IST.
Additionally, the women’s 25m Pistol precision stage and women’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions elimination are also scheduled on the opening day.
For India, Munich represents far more than another World Cup stop. It is a major benchmark event where experienced stars seek medals while the next generation begins its journey against the very best in world shooting.
