India’s Muskan suffered a narrow 9-7 defeat to Canada’s Kaura Coles at 53kg, despite a strong comeback, at the U20 World Championships.

India's Muskan produced one of the most encouraging starts to her campaign at the U20 World Championships before suffering a narrow 9-7 defeat to Canada's Kaura Coles in the 53kg quarterfinals on Tuesday.

The Indian wrestler, an U20 Asian champion and former U17 world champion, had begun the competition in emphatic fashion, winning her opening bout by fall before pinning Romania's Electra Garaiacu after building a 10-0 lead. But her run came to an end against Coles, another former U17 world champion, in a contest that went down to the final seconds.

Muskan's defeat was a significant setback for India's medal hopes, but her performance across the opening rounds demonstrated the quality and potential of the young Indian wrestler.

The day began perfectly for Muskan. The U20 Asian champion opened her campaign against Ukraine's Alevtyna Liashenko and wasted little time establishing control. Muskan secured a first-period fall to progress from her opening bout and immediately underline her medal ambitions.

The result was particularly significant given her pedigree. Muskan had already won an U17 world title and was looking to add a second age-group world championship to her résumé. She followed that performance with another dominant display against Romania's Electra Garaiacu.

Muskan built a commanding 10-0 lead before completing the bout with a fall, securing her place in the quarterfinals in impressive fashion. Two victories, two dominant performances and no indication that she would be easily stopped.

Then came Coles.

The Canadian entered the quarterfinal as another former U17 world champion, making it a contest between two wrestlers with considerable age-group pedigree. Coles started strongly and quickly established a 5-0 advantage. Muskan, however, did not allow the deficit to dictate the remainder of the contest.

She began working her way back into the bout, putting pressure on Coles and forcing the Canadian to defend for extended periods. The momentum shifted sufficiently for Coles to find herself leading only 6-6 on criteria, setting up a tense finish. With the bout finely balanced, Coles produced another significant attacking move.

She executed a headlock throw that was initially scored as a four-point move, creating what appeared to be a decisive advantage.

But the Indian corner immediately challenged the scoring.

The challenge changed the score. The throw was ultimately judged to be worth two points rather than four, reducing Coles' advantage and making the contest 8-7. That decision gave Muskan a genuine opportunity. With only 14 seconds remaining, the Indian needed at least two points to turn the bout around and secure victory.

She continued searching for an opening, but Coles successfully defended her position and prevented Muskan from finding the scoring action she needed. Coles eventually secured a 9-7 victory, advancing to the semifinals and ending Muskan's run.

For the Indian wrestler, it was a heartbreaking finish after such a strong opening to the tournament.

The significance of the contest was reflected in the profiles of the two wrestlers. Muskan is a former U17 world champion and current U20 Asian champion. Coles is also a former U17 world champion and had already made history by becoming Canada's first-ever U20 world champion in 2024. The quarterfinal therefore represented a meeting between two wrestlers who had already tasted age-group world championship success.

Coles will now continue her title defence, while Muskan will have to look for opportunities through the remaining stages of the competition.

India still had other strong performances

Muskan's quarterfinal defeat was not the only Indian storyline from the day. Parveen also competed at 50kg against another former U17 world champion, Morgan Turner of the United States. Parveen managed to score two takedowns and led Turner 4-0, but the American fought back dramatically. Turner locked up a cradle and secured a first-period pin, ending Parveen's campaign.

India's Prince produced a comeback victory at 82kg. Facing Kazakhstan's Nurdaulet Rakhman, Prince overcame an early deficit before taking control of the contest. Rakhman led after scoring a four-pointer, but Prince responded with counter-exposure and further scoring actions to move ahead.

Prince eventually won 8-7, advancing after a tightly contested bout.

Although the quarterfinal defeat will hurt, Muskan's overall performance provided plenty of encouragement. She began the tournament with two dominant victories, including a fall in her opening bout and another pin after building a 10-0 lead. Against Coles, she showed resilience after falling behind 5-0 and fought her way back into contention. Even after the Canadian appeared to create a decisive advantage, India's challenge successfully reduced the margin and gave Muskan a final opportunity.

Ultimately, she could not produce the scoring action required in the final 14 seconds. For an athlete still competing at the U20 level, those moments provide valuable experience.

Muskan will now have to build on the positives from her campaign particularly her attacking ability and capacity to fight back from difficult positions.

The loss to Coles may have ended her immediate title hopes, but it also demonstrated that Muskan belongs in the conversation among the leading young wrestlers in the 53kg category.

For India, the search for another U20 world champion continues.
