Indian wrestler Neelam Sirohi secured a historic medal at the 2026 World Wrestling Championships in Astana, becoming only the second Indian woman to reach a senior World Championships final after defeating Kazakhstan’s Zeynep Bayanova 7-3 in the women’s freestyle 50kg semifinals.

Neelam Sirohi produced a landmark performance at the 2026 World Wrestling Championships, storming into the women’s freestyle 50kg final and guaranteeing India a medal in the category. The Indian wrestler defeated home favourite and Asian Games bronze medallist Zeynep Bayanova of Kazakhstan 7-3 in the semifinal, capping a remarkable campaign on her World Championships debut.

With the victory, Neelam became only the second Indian woman wrestler to reach a senior World Championships final, following Anshu Malik, who achieved the feat in 2021. The result also confirmed India’s first medal at the championships in Astana.

Neelam will now face Japan’s Yui Susaki, a four-time World champion, in the gold-medal bout on Wednesday. The final presents a formidable challenge for the Indian debutant, but her performances so far have established her as one of the standout stories of the competition.

Neelam’s semifinal against Bayanova was a significant test, with the Kazakh wrestler competing on home soil and carrying the advantage of local support. Bayanova had also earned an Asian Games bronze medal, making her a formidable opponent in the race for a place in the final.

Neelam, however, delivered when it mattered most, securing a 7-3 victory to advance to the gold-medal contest. The result guaranteed her a place on the podium, regardless of the outcome of the final.

The win was particularly significant given the scale of the achievement. Neelam is making her debut at the senior World Championships, yet she has already progressed beyond the quarterfinals and semifinals to reach the championship bout.

Her victory also adds another important milestone to Indian women’s wrestling, with Anshu Malik previously being the only Indian woman to reach a senior World Championships final. Neelam’s achievement now places her alongside Malik in that distinction.

Injury to Smirnova Changes Quarterfinal Path

Neelam’s route to the semifinal took an unexpected turn after Russia’s Elizaveta Smirnova, the top seed in the women’s 50kg category, withdrew from their scheduled quarterfinal because of an injury.

Neelam had entered the quarterfinal stage after defeating Belarusian wrestler Natallia Varakina 6-0. The emphatic win had set up a potential clash against Smirnova, who was expected to provide a major test for the Indian.

However, Smirnova’s injury and subsequent withdrawal meant Neelam advanced directly to the semifinals. Reports surrounding the incident indicated that Smirnova had sustained a serious eye injury and required hospital treatment.

While the withdrawal altered the Indian wrestler’s quarterfinal schedule, Neelam still had to negotiate a difficult semifinal against Bayanova to earn her place in the final. She completed that task with a 7-3 victory, confirming that India would leave the championships with a medal in the women’s 50kg category.

Yui Susaki Awaits in the Gold-Medal Bout

Neelam’s final opponent, Yui Susaki of Japan, represents one of the toughest challenges in the division. A four-time World champion, Susaki has established herself among the leading wrestlers in international women’s freestyle competition.

The contrast between the two finalists adds another dimension to the contest. Susaki arrives with an outstanding championship pedigree, while Neelam has emerged as a breakthrough performer on her senior World Championships debut.

For Neelam, the opportunity is to turn a historic run into a gold-medal triumph. Reaching the final has already guaranteed a medal, but defeating a wrestler of Susaki’s standing would represent an even greater achievement.

The Indian will need to reproduce the composure and effectiveness that carried her past Bayanova. Susaki’s experience at the highest level makes the Japanese wrestler a formidable opponent, ensuring that the final will be a major test for the debutant.

Neelam’s progression to the final is a significant development for Indian wrestling. Before this championship, Anshu Malik was the only Indian woman to have reached a senior World Championships final, doing so in 2021. Neelam has now joined that select group.

Her run in Astana has also delivered India its first confirmed medal at the 2026 championships, providing an early boost to the country’s campaign.

The 6-0 victory over Varakina demonstrated Neelam’s ability to dominate an opponent, while her 7-3 semifinal win over Bayanova showed that she could deliver against a major challenger in a high-pressure environment.

The challenge now is to finish the job against Susaki. Whatever the final outcome, Neelam has already secured a place in Indian wrestling history. A victory over the four-time World champion would elevate her breakthrough campaign into a gold-medal achievement.

For now, India will look to its debutant to complete a remarkable journey with one final performance on the biggest stage.
