Panama Name Strong Squad for India Friendly as Khalid Jamil Faces Tough Test in Bengaluru

India’s upcoming international friendly against Panama is set to provide Khalid Jamil and the Indian men’s national football team with a demanding test, after Panama announced a 27-member squad featuring a strong mix of World Cup experience and players competing in leagues across Europe, North America and South America.

The two teams will meet at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on September 25, with the fixture forming part of the FIFA international window. It will be the first-ever meeting between India and Panama. Panama are currently ranked 44th in the FIFA rankings and featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, adding further significance to the fixture. For India, the match represents another opportunity to test themselves against a nation that has recently competed on football's biggest international stage.

Panama head coach Thomas Christiansen has selected 27 players for the Asian tour, with 14 members of the squad having featured at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The experienced contingent includes goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera, defenders César Blackman, Jorge Gutiérrez, Amir Murillo, Andrés Andrade, José Córdoba and Jiovany Ramos, midfielders Carlos Harvey, Cristian Martínez, José Luis Rodríguez and Azarías Londoño, and forwards José Fajardo and Tomás Rodríguez.

That World Cup exposure gives Christiansen a significant core of players accustomed to the intensity and tactical demands of international football. The club spread within the squad is also notable. José Córdoba plays for Norwich City, placing him in the English Championship, while Carlos Harvey represents Minnesota United in MLS. Amir Murillo is with Turkish club Beşiktaş, Andrés Andrade plays for Austrian side LASK Linz, and José Rodríguez is with FC Juárez in Mexico.

Panama also have players based in Slovakia, Belgium, the United States and South America, alongside a group drawn from their domestic league.

Christiansen has also used the tour to introduce new faces into the senior setup. Six players have received their first call-up to the Panama senior national team: Marcos De León, Jair Modelo, Joseph Jones, Josué Vergara, Daivis Murillo and Mijahir Jiménez. Among them, Vergara plays for KAA Gent, while Jiménez is with New York Red Bulls, providing the newcomers with experience of European and MLS football, respectively.

The selection therefore combines established international players with footballers looking to make their mark at senior level.

India Faces a Different Challenge

For Khalid Jamil, the Panama fixture comes as part of a difficult run of international matches for India. The Blue Tigers are scheduled to face Panama before taking on Brazil, while Uruguay are also part of India's broader international programme. The Panama match will therefore serve as an important competitive examination before India faces another heavyweight opponent.

India will have to deal with a Panama side that possesses players accustomed to different tactical environments. The presence of footballers from the English Championship, MLS, Turkish football, the Austrian Bundesliga and Liga MX gives Christiansen multiple options and adds variety to the squad.

The India fixture is only the beginning of Panama's Asian tour. Following the match in Bengaluru, the Panamanian delegation will travel to Japan for the Kirin Cup. They are scheduled to face New Zealand on October 1 in Yokohama, before playing either Japan or Ecuador on October 5 in Tokyo. The tour gives Christiansen an opportunity to assess his squad against three different opponents while also integrating the new faces into the national team.

For India, however, the immediate focus will be on September 25.

The Panama squad makes clear that India will not be facing an experimental side made up solely of fringe players. While Christiansen has introduced six newcomers, the group also contains 14 World Cup players, alongside footballers competing in several established international leagues. That combination should make the Bengaluru friendly a valuable test for Jamil and his players.

For India, the objective will be to compete against a higher-ranked World Cup nation, assess the team's organisation under pressure and give the players valuable exposure against opponents operating at a different level of international football. The Panama squad, meanwhile, will arrive in Bengaluru with its own ambitions as Christiansen begins a new phase after the World Cup.

The stage is therefore set for an intriguing contest: India looking to measure its progress under Khalid Jamil, and Panama arriving with a squad blending World Cup experience, international league exposure and new talent.
