Priyanuj Bhattacharya and Ritvik Gupta Clinch National Titles in High-Intensity Finals

The UTT 87th Inter-State Junior and Youth National Table Tennis Championships in Dehradun delivered a series of high-quality contests, with Assam’s Priyanuj Bhattacharya and Jammu & Kashmir’s Ritvik Gupta emerging as the standout performers in the Under-19 and Under-17 boys’ singles categories, respectively.
Both finals were defined by resilience, momentum shifts, and the ability to execute under pressure, highlighting the depth of emerging talent in Indian table tennis.
Priyanuj Bhattacharya’s triumph in the Under-19 boys’ singles final was particularly notable for the manner in which it unfolded. Facing Tamil Nadu’s P. B. Abhinand, who had already been in strong form throughout the tournament, Priyanuj found himself trailing early as his opponent raced to a 2-0 lead. At that stage, the contest appeared to be tilting decisively in Abhinand’s favour.
However, Priyanuj responded with composure and tactical clarity. Adjusting his approach, he began to control rallies more effectively, reducing unforced errors and forcing Abhinand into longer exchanges. This shift in rhythm proved decisive, as Priyanuj went on to win four consecutive games, sealing a 4-2 comeback victory. The win not only denied Abhinand a third gold medal at the championships but also marked a significant milestone in Priyanuj’s career as he secured a long-awaited national title. His path to the final further underlined his consistency and mental strength. In the semifinals, Priyanuj was pushed to the limit by Tamil Nadu’s M. R. Balamurugan in a seven-game encounter. After taking a 2-0 lead, he lost momentum and trailed 2-3 before regaining control. Holding his nerve in the decisive stages, he closed out the match with a strong finish, winning the final two games to book his place in the summit clash.
In contrast, Abhinand’s route to the final had been more controlled. He navigated his semifinal against West Bengal’s Punit Biswas with relative authority, recovering from a tight second game to dominate the remainder of the match. His consistent performances throughout the tournament made him one of the favourites heading into the final, but he was unable to maintain that level in the face of Priyanuj’s comeback.
The Under-19 doubles event, however, provided redemption for Abhinand. Partnering Balamurugan, the Tamil Nadu duo delivered a composed performance in the final to secure the title. After taking the opening game, they briefly lost momentum but quickly regained control, closing out the match in four games with disciplined play and effective coordination. While the Under-19 category showcased a comeback defined by tactical adjustments, the Under-17 boys’ singles final offered a different kind of contest one built on endurance and repeated momentum shifts. Ritvik Gupta edged Odisha’s Sarthak Arya in a tightly contested seven-game battle, winning 4-3 to claim the title.
The match saw both players exchange control at various stages. Sarthak responded strongly after dropping the opening game, taking a 2-1 lead and applying pressure through aggressive play. Ritvik, however, consistently found ways to respond, matching his opponent’s intensity and maintaining composure during critical phases. The deciding game captured the essence of the contest. Ritvik tightened his defensive play and capitalised on key errors from Sarthak, demonstrating greater control in the closing moments. His ability to manage pressure in the final points proved decisive, allowing him to secure the title in a match that tested both physical stamina and mental resilience.
This victory also marked Ritvik’s consecutive national title, reinforcing his position as one of the most consistent performers in his age group. His journey through the tournament included a composed semifinal win over PSPBA’s Sahil Rawat, where he recovered from a narrow loss in the second game to close out the match efficiently. The doubles event in the Under-17 category further highlighted the competitive depth of the field. Sahil Rawat and Dhairya Rawat emerged champions after a closely fought five-game final against fellow PSPBA players Trishal Raj Kumar and Rushikesh Jagtap. The match featured multiple shifts in momentum, but Sahil and Dhairya maintained composure in the decider to secure the title.
Across categories, the championships reflected a broader trend in Indian table tennis—the emergence of players capable of handling high-pressure situations while maintaining technical consistency. The performances of Priyanuj Bhattacharya and Ritvik Gupta, in particular, demonstrated the importance of adaptability, whether in staging comebacks or navigating tightly contested matches.
As the junior circuit continues to evolve, such performances provide a strong foundation for future progression into senior-level competition. Both Priyanuj and Ritvik have not only secured national titles but have also established themselves as key prospects in India’s table tennis pipeline.
