Punjab FC successfully defended their Dream Sports Championship All India Football Federation Junior League title, overcoming Minerva Academy FC 5-3 in a tense penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time at the Bambolim Athletic Stadium in Goa.

In what was a repeat of last year’s final, the clash once again showcased the depth of footballing talent emerging from Punjab, with both teams delivering a high-intensity contest that was ultimately decided by fine margins.

The match began with Minerva Academy FC asserting control early on. Dominating possession and dictating tempo, Minerva enjoyed nearly 67 percent of the ball in the first half and created multiple opportunities. Their midfield operated with composure, allowing them to push Punjab FC deep into their own half. However, despite their territorial dominance, Minerva struggled to convert chances. Their inability to find a decisive final pass or finish proved costly, as Punjab FC gradually grew into the game.

Against the run of play, Punjab FC struck first in the 38th minute.

A well-timed through ball from Kamlesh Chand split the Minerva defence, sending Jasmeet Singh clear on goal. The forward showed composure beyond his years, calmly slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to give Punjab FC the lead heading into halftime.

Minerva Academy FC responded immediately after the break. Just four minutes into the second half, Md Azam Khan produced a moment of individual brilliance to restore parity. Driving down the left flank, he beat multiple defenders before seeing his initial shot blocked. Reacting quickest to the rebound, Azam converted to make it 1-1 in the 49th minute.

The goal injected fresh energy into the contest. Minerva continued to press, with Azam again coming close shortly after, only to be denied by a crucial defensive intervention. Punjab FC, meanwhile, looked dangerous on the counter and nearly regained the lead when substitute Arambam Deepak Singh forced an acrobatic save from the Minerva goalkeeper.

The match evolved into an end-to-end battle, with both teams creating chances but failing to find a decisive breakthrough.

The final phase of the match was defined by missed opportunities. Minerva Academy FC created several openings in the closing minutes, including during eight minutes of added time, but their finishing continued to let them down. Punjab FC, on the other hand, remained disciplined defensively while looking to exploit transitions.

As the referee signalled full-time with the score locked at 1-1, the title was set to be decided by penalties a test of nerve as much as skill.

Penalty Shootout: Punjab Hold Their Nerve

Punjab FC approached the shootout with composure. Pawandeep Singh converted the opening penalty, setting the tone. Minerva responded through Konthoujam Denamoni, and the early exchanges remained evenly matched as Aayush Koul and Md Azam Khan converted their respective spot-kicks. The turning point came in the third round.

Akash P scored confidently for Punjab FC, but Minerva substitute Ramung Zimik saw his effort brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Augustasya Gupta. The save shifted momentum firmly in Punjab’s favour. Kabyansh Rai extended the lead with a calm finish, putting Minerva under pressure. Although Greatson Hidam kept Minerva’s hopes alive by converting his penalty, the outcome was effectively sealed when Punjab captain Jasmeet Singh stepped up.

Showing leadership and composure, Jasmeet converted the decisive penalty, securing a 5-3 shootout victory and back-to-back titles for Punjab FC.

Augustasya Gupta emerged as the hero for Punjab FC. His crucial save during the shootout proved decisive, earning him the Player of the Match award. In high-pressure situations, such moments often define championships, and Gupta delivered when it mattered most. Jasmeet Singh, meanwhile, capped off an outstanding campaign by being named Player of the Tournament. His goal in regulation time and composed finish in the shootout highlighted his importance to the team.

For Minerva Academy FC, Md Azam Khan was a constant threat. His equalising goal and overall attacking presence were among the standout aspects of their performance.

The final once again underlined Punjab’s dominance in youth football. With both finalists hailing from the same state, it reflects the strength of grassroots systems, academies, and structured development pathways in the region. Competitions like the AIFF Junior League continue to play a critical role in identifying and nurturing talent for the future.

Punjab FC’s ability to defend their title also points to consistency in their development model a key factor in transitioning young players to higher levels.

Punjab FC’s victory was a testament to resilience, composure, and tactical discipline. While Minerva Academy FC controlled large parts of the game, football ultimately rewarded efficiency and mental strength under pressure. Punjab capitalised on their chances, defended resolutely, and held their nerve in the shootout.

In youth football, such matches are not just about results they are about shaping future professionals.

And on this stage, Punjab FC once again proved they have both the talent and temperament to succeed.
