Unnati Hooda Survives Tough Battle to Reach Women’s Singles Pre-Quarterfinals at Asian Games 2026

India’s Unnati Hooda booked her place in the women’s singles Round of 16 at the Asian Games 2026 after surviving a gruelling three-game battle against Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching.
The Indian youngster prevailed 21-14, 20-22, 21-19 in a contest that lasted 79 minutes, overcoming a strong fightback from her Malaysian opponent to keep her campaign alive. The victory was far from straightforward. Unnati controlled much of the opening game, but Wong responded strongly in the second to force a decider. The third game then went down to the wire before the Indian produced the points she needed to seal her place in the pre-quarterfinals.
Unnati will now face Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani later on Saturday in what will be a quick turnaround for the teenager.
Unnati began the contest on the front foot and established control in the opening game. The Indian won the first game 21-14, putting herself in a strong position to close out the match in straight games. However, Wong Ling Ching, ranked 38th in the world, refused to surrender.
Unnati, ranked 25th, had the advantage in the rankings entering the contest, but the Malaysian demonstrated why the difference in ranking could not be taken for granted. The second game became significantly more competitive, with both players fighting for every point. Unnati appeared to have done enough to move into the Round of 16 when she reached match point at 20-18. But Wong saved one match point and continued to apply pressure.
The Malaysian eventually won the second game 22-20, forcing the match into a deciding third game.
Wong Pushes Unnati to the Limit
The second-game defeat meant Unnati had to regroup quickly. Wong had successfully changed the momentum of the contest and carried that confidence into the latter stages of the second game. The Malaysian had also kept the game close despite Unnati having held a sizeable lead at the interval. After the change of ends, Wong moved ahead 17-16.
Unnati, however, responded immediately. The Indian teenager produced a strong comeback to regain control and earn two match points at 20-18. Wong saved one of those opportunities, keeping the outcome alive. But the Malaysian was unable to complete the comeback.
A cross-court shot from Wong went wide at a crucial moment, handing Unnati the narrow 21-19 victory in the decider.
The third game was ultimately decided by the smallest of margins. With both players having already spent considerable energy over the first two games, the physical demands of the contest became increasingly evident. Unnati nevertheless maintained her composure through the decisive stages. The Indian eventually closed out the game 21-19, completing a 2-1 victory and confirming her place in the women's singles pre-quarterfinals.
For a teenager competing at a major multi-sport event, the ability to recover after losing a game from a match-point position was an important part of the victory. The final scoreline—21-14, 20-22, 21-19—also reflected how closely contested the match became after Unnati's strong opening.
Scheduling Creates Another Challenge
Unnati’s reward for the hard-fought victory is another match later on Saturday. She is scheduled to face Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani in the Round of 16. The scheduling means Unnati will have limited time to recover from her 79-minute battle against Wong before returning to the court. Putri represents another significant challenge for the Indian youngster, making recovery and preparation particularly important.
The unusual scheduling has added another layer to Unnati’s Asian Games campaign. Having just completed a demanding three-game encounter, she will now have to reset quickly for her next assignment.
The victory over Wong Ling Ching keeps Unnati firmly in contention in the women’s singles competition. She showed different aspects of her game across the three games—control in the opener, resilience after losing the second and composure during a tense decider. The 21-14 opening-game victory suggested that Unnati could potentially finish the match quickly, but Wong’s response ensured that the Indian had to work for every point.
Even after missing the opportunity to close out the match at 20-18 in the second game, Unnati recovered in the decider. Ultimately, it was her ability to withstand the Malaysian’s late challenge that secured the result.
Unnati now moves into the Round of 16 with another demanding test immediately ahead. After a 79-minute contest, the Indian teenager will need to recover quickly before taking on Putri Kusuma Wardani later in the day.
For now, though, the biggest takeaway is clear: Unnati Hooda has survived a major test and advanced to the next stage of the Asian Games women’s singles competition.
