Velavan Senthilkumar and Tanvi Khanna Storm into HCL Squash PSA Challenger Mumbai Semifinals

Indian squash enjoyed another successful day on the PSA Challenger Tour as Velavan Senthilkumar and Tanvi Khanna booked their places in the semifinals of the HCL Squash PSA Challenger Tour-Mumbai with commanding quarterfinal victories on Wednesday.
Competing at the Juhu Vile Parle Gymkhana Club in Mumbai, the two Indian stars produced confident performances against higher-quality international opposition to keep the home challenge alive in both the men's and women's draws. While top seed Velavan continued his impressive campaign with a straight-games victory over Egypt's Abdullah Hafez, Tanvi overcame Malaysia's Zoe Foo in four games to secure a place in the last four.
With the tournament entering its decisive stages, both Indians will now face tough semifinal encounters as they bid for a place in the finals.
Top seed Velavan Senthilkumar once again showcased why he entered the tournament as the favourite. Facing fourth seed Abdullah Hafez of Egypt, Velavan was tested in a closely contested opening game before taking complete control of the match. The Indian edged the first game 15-13, saving crucial points during an intense battle that could easily have swung either way.
After surviving the early challenge, Velavan raised his level significantly. Displaying excellent movement around the court and sharp shot selection, he comfortably claimed the next two games 11-4 and 11-3 to wrap up the match in straight games. The victory highlighted the Chennai-based player's consistency throughout the tournament and reinforced his status as one of India's leading men's squash players.
Velavan's reward is another difficult encounter against second seed Yassin Shohdy of Egypt. Shohdy advanced to the semifinals after defeating Tomotaka Endo of Japan in straight games, winning 11-8, 11-8, 11-4. The semifinal promises to be one of the tournament's marquee contests, with both players among the highest-ranked competitors in the draw.
A victory would put Velavan one win away from adding another PSA Challenger title to his growing resume.
In the women's draw, third seed Tanvi Khanna produced another composed display to overcome Malaysia's Zoe Foo. Tanvi dominated the early stages of the contest, taking the first two games 11-6 and 11-7 through aggressive attacking play and consistent accuracy. Zoe responded strongly in the third game, reducing the deficit by winning 11-8 and briefly threatening a comeback.
However, Tanvi quickly regained control in the fourth game. Maintaining her composure under pressure, the Indian sealed the match 11-6, completing a deserved four-game victory and progressing to the semifinals. The win continues Tanvi's encouraging run of form on the PSA Challenger circuit and reflects the steady progress she has made over the past year.
Tanvi will now face Japan's Akari Midorikawa for a place in the final. The sixth-seeded Japanese player advanced after defeating India's Shameena Riaz in four games.
Midorikawa claimed the contest 12-10, 11-8, 5-11, and 11-2, overcoming a spirited challenge from the Indian before pulling away in the fourth game. The semifinal is expected to be closely contested, with both players having displayed solid form throughout the tournament. While Velavan and Tanvi progressed, other Indian players saw their campaigns come to an end. Om Semwal came agonisingly close to reaching the men's semifinals before losing a thrilling five-game battle against Egypt's Ziad Ibrahim. After fighting back twice during the contest, Om eventually went down 11-5, 11-13, 11-8, 8-11, and 11-9 in one of the longest matches of the day.
In the women's competition, Shameena Riaz exited after her defeat to Akari Midorikawa despite winning the third game and forcing her opponent to work hard for victory.
Their performances nevertheless highlighted the growing depth of Indian squash on the PSA circuit.
Egypt once again underlined its dominance in world squash with multiple players progressing deep into both draws. Apart from Yassin Shohdy and Ziad Ibrahim in the men's event, the women's semifinals will feature Farida Walid and Nour Khafagy, both representing Egypt. Farida comfortably defeated Risa Sugimoto of Japan in straight games, while Nour also secured a convincing three-game victory over compatriot Malak Fathy.
The strong Egyptian representation reflects the country's continued supremacy in international squash.
The HCL Squash PSA Challenger Tour has become an important event on the domestic calendar, giving Indian players valuable opportunities to compete against quality international opposition without travelling overseas. Ranking points earned at Challenger events play a crucial role in helping players improve their PSA standings and qualify for higher-level tournaments.
For players like Velavan Senthilkumar and Tanvi Khanna, consistent performances at events like the Mumbai Challenger are essential as they continue climbing the world rankings.
With only four players remaining in each draw, the competition has reached its decisive stage. India now has strong representation in both semifinals, with Velavan carrying the nation's hopes in the men's event and Tanvi aiming to continue her impressive run in the women's competition. Both players face challenging opponents, but their performances so far suggest they are more than capable of reaching the final.
A title victory for either player would not only provide valuable PSA ranking points but also further strengthen India's growing presence on the international squash circuit. As the tournament enters its final stages in Mumbai, Indian fans will be hoping Velavan Senthilkumar and Tanvi Khanna can continue their winning momentum and bring home silverware.
