Abhay Singh, Bhumeshwory Devi Win Historic Sprint and Middle-Distance Medals for India at Asian U23 Athletics Championships

India's impressive campaign at the inaugural Asian U23 Athletics Championships continued on Friday as Abhay Singh and Bhumeshwory Devi clinched bronze medals in the men's 200m and women's 800m, respectively, adding to the country's growing medal haul in Ordos, China.
Abhay created history by becoming the first Indian athlete to win an individual sprint medal at the inaugural edition of the championships, while Bhumeshwory produced another composed middle-distance performance to secure a podium finish in the women's 800m.
The twin medals further underlined the depth of India's emerging athletics talent, with success now coming across sprints, middle-distance races, relays, throws, and distance events during the continental meet.
The highlight of India's day came in the men's 200 meters, where Abhay Singh delivered one of the finest performances of his young career. Running against a strong field that included some of Asia's quickest sprinters, the Indian clocked 20.96 seconds to finish third and secure the bronze medal. Although the race was run with a +2.2 m/s tailwind, Abhay's performance showcased his ability to compete with Asia's elite sprint talent.
China's Youwen Huang won the gold medal in 20.43 seconds, while Japan's Kota Uematsu claimed silver with 20.58 seconds. Abhay stayed composed throughout the race to hold off the chasing pack and cross the finish line in third place, earning India its first-ever individual sprint medal at the Asian U23 Championships.
The achievement marks another significant step in India's rapidly improving sprint program, which has witnessed remarkable progress over the past few seasons.
Abhay's medal did not come as a surprise to those who have followed his recent progress. The young sprinter has steadily improved his performances over the past two years and entered the championships with growing confidence.
Competing against athletes from sprint powerhouses such as China and Japan, he produced one of the biggest performances of his career when it mattered most. Winning an individual sprint medal at a continental championship represents a major milestone not only for Abhay but also for Indian athletics, where sprint success at the international level has traditionally been difficult to achieve.
His bronze medal is expected to provide further confidence ahead of future senior international competitions.
India's second medal of the day came in the women's 800 meters, where Bhumeshwory Devi delivered another impressive performance. The Manipur athlete clocked 2:10.20 seconds to finish third and claim the bronze medal after running a tactically disciplined race. Uzbekistan's Jonbibi Hukmova won the title in 2:08.41 seconds, while Japan's Kurumi Sugure secured silver after finishing in 2:09.42 seconds.
Bhumeshwory maintained contact with the leading group throughout the race before producing a determined finish to secure India's second medal of the evening.
Her performance continued India's long-standing strength in middle-distance running, where Indian athletes have consistently challenged for medals at continental competitions.
The bronze medal represents another important achievement in Bhumeshwory's rapidly developing career. The Manipur runner was crowned the 2025 Inter-State Championships winner before joining IndianOil's Project Shakti at the National Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru in 2024. Since then, she has steadily improved under a structured high-performance program, and her medal in Ordos is further evidence of that progress.
Competing in an international championship final requires not only physical preparation but also tactical awareness and mental resilience, qualities Bhumeshwory displayed throughout the race. Her podium finish is expected to strengthen her position among India's leading middle-distance prospects.
The two bronze medals added to what has already been an encouraging campaign for India at the inaugural Asian U23 Athletics Championships. Earlier in the competition, India had celebrated the following:
Gold in the Mixed 4x400m Relay
Silver and bronze in the Men's 5000m
Bronze in the Women's 3000m Steeplechase
Bronze in the Men's Discus Throw
With Abhay Singh and Bhumeshwory Devi adding two more medals, India continues to demonstrate impressive depth across multiple disciplines rather than relying on success in only a handful of events.
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of India's campaign has been the diversity of medal-winning events. The country has now reached the podium in sprints, relays, middle-distance races, long-distance events, throws, and steeplechase, reflecting the broad development of Indian athletics. The emergence of athletes such as Abhay Singh also signals encouraging progress in sprinting, an area where India has historically struggled at major international competitions.
Similarly, Bhumeshwory's success reinforces the country's growing strength in women's middle-distance events. These performances also highlight the increasing impact of national training centers, high-performance programs, and scientific coaching initiatives that are helping young Indian athletes transition successfully to the international stage.
India's campaign at the Asian U23 Athletics Championships is far from over. Several medal contenders remain in action over the coming days, including finals in the men's 10,000m, women's discus throw, men's long jump, women's shot put, women's 100m hurdles, and men's 400m, where multiple Indian athletes will look to add to the country's medal tally.
With confidence continuing to grow following another successful day, the Indian contingent will head into the remaining events believing that more podium finishes are within reach.
For now, however, the spotlight rightly belongs to Abhay Singh and Bhumeshwory Devi, whose bronze medals have added another memorable chapter to India's impressive performance at the inaugural Asian U23 Athletics Championships and further demonstrated the exciting future of Indian athletics on the continental stage.
