The celebrations may still be fresh after India's historic Asian Games triumph, but the Indian men's hockey team has little time to dwell on its latest piece of history.

Attention now shifts to the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026, where the reigning Asian champions will return to home soil to face the continent's leading hockey nations from October 27 to November 5. The tournament will be hosted across Jalandhar and Mohali, bringing international hockey back to Punjab, one of the sport's traditional heartlands in India.

India enters the competition with considerable momentum after winning a second consecutive Asian Games gold medal in Aichi-Nagoya. The achievement was significant not only because of the title itself, but because India became the first team to successfully defend its Asian Games men's hockey crown.

That success has raised expectations ahead of another major continental tournament.

India's victory in Japan represented another important milestone under chief coach Craig Fulton, but the Australian knows that the team cannot afford to remain caught up in the celebrations.

“Winning the Asian Games gold in Japan was a special achievement for this group. But now the celebrations are behind us and our focus has to shift quickly,” Fulton said. The coach stressed that the Hero Asian Champions Trophy represents an entirely new challenge, despite India entering as the defending Asian Games champions. Playing at home will bring its own pressure. India will be expected to challenge for the title in front of supporters who will be eager to see the Asian Games champions in action. Fulton wants his players to carry the same hunger, discipline and intensity that helped them succeed in Japan.

The short turnaround also means managing the physical and mental demands on a squad that has just completed a demanding Asian Games campaign.

The 2026 edition will feature six teams, bringing together some of the strongest hockey nations in Asia.

India will be joined by:

  • Japan

  • China

  • Malaysia

  • South Korea

  • Bangladesh

The format provides India with another opportunity to test itself against familiar Asian opponents while also giving emerging teams a chance to compete against the continent's leading side. Malaysia, Japan and South Korea in particular have regularly challenged India in Asian hockey, making the league stage a potentially demanding test before the knockout matches. For India, the tournament will also be about maintaining standards. The Asian Games gold has strengthened the team's position at the top of continental hockey, but the next challenge is to sustain that level across another competition.

The tournament carries significance beyond the Indian team's campaign. The Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab 2026 marks a major moment for Punjab, with international hockey returning to the state. Few places in India have a deeper connection with hockey than Punjab. The state has produced generations of Indian players and remains closely associated with the country's hockey culture.

Hosting the tournament in Jalandhar and Mohali therefore adds an important local dimension to the competition. All league-stage matches will be played at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar, allowing fans in the city to watch the participating teams throughout the initial phase.

The tournament will then move to Mohali for its decisive matches, with the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium scheduled to host the semi-finals and final. For Indian hockey supporters, the opportunity to watch the national team compete on home turf immediately after its Asian Games triumph should add another layer of anticipation.

India also arrives with an impressive history in the Asian Champions Trophy. Since the competition was established in 2011, India have won the title four times, making them the most successful team in the tournament's history. Their record also includes a shared title with Pakistan in 2018. That final in Muscat, Oman, was washed out by rain, resulting in the two teams sharing the trophy.

India's success in the competition reflects its sustained strength in Asian hockey, but the current squad will have to create its own chapter. The challenge is particularly interesting because the team has already achieved its immediate Asian Games objective. The next step is to ensure that the gold medal does not become a high point followed by a drop in intensity.

The Hero Asian Champions Trophy arrives at an important stage of India's hockey cycle. The Asian Games victory has provided confidence, while the home tournament gives the team another chance to build momentum in front of its supporters. It will also be an opportunity for the coaching staff to assess combinations, maintain squad depth and continue developing the tactical structures that have made India increasingly competitive against the world's best teams.

For the players, meanwhile, the message from Fulton is straightforward: the Asian Games celebrations are over. The next trophy is already on the horizon. From October 27 to November 5, Jalandhar and Mohali will become the centre of Asian hockey, with six nations competing for continental supremacy. India will arrive as Asian Games champions and the most successful team in Asian Champions Trophy history.

But on home soil, reputation will count for little once the first whistle goes. The task now is to turn the confidence of Aichi-Nagoya into another trophyand begin the next chapter of Indian men's hockey in Punjab.
