The next generation of Indian table tennis talent officially took center stage on Thursday as franchises completed their selections for Dream UTT Juniors Season 2, with U Mumba TT making highly-rated youngster Ahona Ray the first overall pick in the player draft.

The competition, which will run from July 8 to 19 alongside Butterfly UTT Season 7 in Goa, continues to strengthen the pathway between grassroots and professional table tennis in India. Seven franchises selected 14 of the country's most promising Under-15 players, creating an opportunity for them to compete, train and develop within a professional league environment. Among the names available in the draft, Ahona Ray stood out as one of the most accomplished young paddlers in the country. The talented player recently won the Girls' Singles title at the WTT Youth Contender Doha 2026 and has already established herself as a regular performer at national and continental competitions.

Recognising her potential, U Mumba TT used the first overall selection to secure her services, making a strong statement ahead of the second season of Dream UTT Juniors.

Dream UTT Juniors was launched with a clear objective to bridge the gap between junior and elite table tennis by giving young players direct exposure to the professional ecosystem of Ultimate Table Tennis. Unlike traditional junior competitions, the tournament allows emerging paddlers to experience the same high-performance environment as the country's biggest stars. Players get opportunities to train alongside professional athletes, work under experienced franchise coaching teams and learn the demands of elite competition.

The initiative is a joint collaboration between Ultimate Table Tennis and the Dream Sports Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dream Sports. Selected athletes earn their place through performances at the Dream Sports Championships Table Tennis tournament, which serves as the talent identification platform for the league.

The second edition once again brings together seven boys and seven girls identified as some of the brightest prospects in Indian table tennis.

Ahona's selection as the first pick reflects both her recent achievements and the growing expectations surrounding her career. The teenager has enjoyed a breakthrough period on the international junior circuit and arrives in Goa with the reputation of being one of India's most exciting young talents. U Mumba TT complemented their selection of Ahona by also drafting Somdev Sengupta, giving the franchise a balanced squad for the upcoming competition.

Defending champions Kolkata ThunderBlades also strengthened their roster by securing Vatsal Duklan and Titash Chatterjee, while Ahmedabad APL Pipers selected Souswarya Banerjee and Aarya Redkar. PBG Pune Jaguars drafted Aarav Acharya and Shreya Dhar, while UP Prometheans added Nilay Pattekar and Subhomita Basak. Dempo Goa Challengers secured Akash Rajavelu and Sreosree Chakraborty, while Dabang Delhi TTC completed the draft with Himon Mondal and Sreejani Chakraborty after the draft order reversed in the second round.

The quality of players selected underlines the increasing depth emerging within Indian table tennis at the grassroots level.

The impact of Dream UTT Juniors is already becoming visible. One of the biggest success stories from the inaugural season was Divyanshi Bhowmick, who recently became the youngest player ever to be drafted into a Butterfly UTT franchise when Dabang Delhi TTC selected her for Season 7. Her progression from Dream UTT Juniors to the professional league demonstrates the effectiveness of the development pathway being created through the initiative. For many of the players selected this year, that journey now becomes a realistic target.

The opportunity to train and compete alongside established national and international stars provides valuable exposure that can accelerate development during crucial formative years.

Butterfly UTT co-promoter Vita Dani emphasised the importance of the competition in India's long-term development strategy. According to Dani, the first edition highlighted the immense talent available at the grassroots level, while the league environment allows young players to learn and grow within a professional structure. The broader objective remains creating sustainable pathways that help talented juniors transition successfully into elite competition.

Indian table tennis has enjoyed significant growth over the last decade, with players regularly competing at major international events. Initiatives such as Dream UTT Juniors are designed to ensure that the next generation receives the support and opportunities required to continue that upward trajectory.

The competition will mirror the format used in Butterfly UTT. Each franchise will face every other team once during the league phase. Every tie will feature three matches — Boys' Singles, Girls' Singles and Mixed Doubles. Each individual match victory contributes one point towards the team standings, making every contest important in the race for qualification.

At the conclusion of the league stage, the top four teams will progress to the semi-finals before competing for the championship title. All matches will be streamed live on FanCode, providing fans an opportunity to watch some of India's most promising young table tennis players compete on a national stage.

With Ahona Ray leading an exciting draft class and several emerging stars eager to make their mark, Dream UTT Juniors Season 2 promises to be another significant step in shaping the future of Indian table tennis.
