Gujarat’s Vivaan Dave and Maharashtra’s Divyanshi Bhowmick emerged as the U-17 champions at the UTT National Ranking Table Tennis Championships in Kanpur, producing composed performances under pressure to claim the Youth Boys and Youth Girls titles respectively at the Sportz Hub.

Both finals delivered the intensity expected at the business end of a national ranking tournament. Quick exchanges, smart placement and momentum shifts defined the two title clashes, with Vivaan overcoming Karnataka’s Atharva Nawarange in a five-game battle while Divyanshi defeated Tamil Nadu’s Ananya Muralidharan in four games.

Vivaan’s victory came after an absorbing contest that swung repeatedly, while Divyanshi showed remarkable composure in a crucial third game before taking complete control of the final.

The Youth Boys U-17 final between Vivaan and Atharva was a closely fought contest from the start. Atharva made the stronger beginning and claimed the opening game 11-8, putting Vivaan under immediate pressure. However, the Gujarat paddler quickly adjusted his game and found a way back into the contest.

Vivaan edged the second game 11-8 before taking the third 11-9, giving himself a 2-1 advantage in the final. Atharva, however, refused to allow the match to slip away. The Karnataka player fought back strongly in the fourth game, winning it 11-9 and forcing the championship match into a deciding fifth game. With the title on the line, Vivaan produced his best table tennis of the match. He kept the rallies short and purposeful, took the ball early and gradually began to dominate the exchanges. Rather than allowing the decider to become another tight battle, Vivaan raised his level at the most important moment.

He pulled away from Atharva and closed out the deciding game 11-4 to seal a 3-2 victory and claim the U-17 boys’ title.

The final score read 8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, and 11-4.

Vivaan’s ability to reset after losing the opening game and then deliver his strongest performance in the decider underlined the composure required to win a national title.

Divyanshi Bhowmick takes control after tense third game

The Youth Girls U-17 final was shorter but equally competitive.

Divyanshi began confidently against Ananya and took the opening game 11-6 with brisk strokeplay and quick exchanges. Ananya responded intelligently in the second game, tightening her play and disrupting Divyanshi’s rhythm. The Tamil Nadu paddler levelled the match by winning the game 11-9.

The third game became the crucial phase of the contest. Both players traded quick points, and neither was willing to concede an advantage. The game remained finely balanced deep into the closing stages, but Divyanshi held her nerve to edge it 12-10.

That narrow victory proved to be the turning point.

With the momentum back in her favor, the Maharashtra player dictated the pace far more confidently in the fourth game. Ananya struggled to maintain the same consistency, while Divyanshi continued to press her advantage.

She wrapped up the final game 11-3 to complete a 3-1 victory and secure the U-17 girls’ crown. The final score was 11-6, 9-11, 12-10, 11-3.

Vivaan had earned his place in the title clash with a composed 3-1 semifinal victory over Tamil Nadu’s Vishruth Ramakrishnan. He won the opening game 11-7 before Vishruth levelled the match by taking the second 12-10. Vivaan then regained control, winning the next two games 11-8 and 11-7 to book his place in the final.

Atharva also reached the championship match after an impressive comeback against Maharashtra’s Prateek Tulsani.

After losing the opening game 7-11, Atharva responded strongly to win the next three games 11-6, 11-7 and 11-8. In the girls’ section, Divyanshi produced a dominant straight-games semifinal victory over West Bengal’s Ankolika Chakraborty. She was tested in the opening game, eventually winning 14-12, before taking greater control to win 11-8 and 11-4.

Ananya, meanwhile, came through the most gripping semifinal of the U-17 competition. She survived a five-game marathon against Maharashtra’s Naisha Rewaskar, winning 5-11, 16-14, 11-9, 10-12, 11-8.

After losing the opening game, Ananya battled back to win a tense second game that went beyond deuce. The contest remained evenly poised through the next two games before she held her nerve in the decider.

The quarterfinal stage had also produced several close contests. Vivaan was pushed by Tamil Nadu’s M. Ashvajith, particularly in the opening two games, which he won 14-12 and 11-9 before closing out the match 11-2 in the third. Vishruth also faced a challenging start against West Bengal’s Koustab Chakraborty, taking the first two games 11-9 before completing a straight-games win.

Atharva recovered after dropping the third game against Tamil Nadu’s Jishnu Balaji Venkatgiri, while Prateek defeated Maharashtra’s Nilay Pattekar 3-1. In the girls’ quarterfinals, Divyanshi and Ankolika progressed in straight games, while Naisha overcame West Bengal’s Shreya Dhar in four games.

Ananya was involved in another close encounter, defeating Maharashtra’s Riana Bhoota 11-6, 13-11, 11-13, 11-9.

The conclusion of the U-17 competition brings another major stage of the championships to an end in Kanpur. Attention will now shift towards the Men’s and Women’s singles main draws following the completion of the group stages. The U-19 Boys and Girls competitions will also get underway.

For Vivaan Dave and Divyanshi Bhowmick, however, the U-17 competition will be remembered for their ability to handle pressure when the margins were at their narrowest.

Vivaan saved his best for the deciding game of a five-game final. Divyanshi survived a tense 12-10 third game before dominating the fourth.

At the Sportz Hub, both players showed that close matches are often decided not simply by strokeplay, but by composure, tactical awareness and the ability to execute under pressure.
