Diya Chitale Defeats Sreeja Akula to Reach Round of 32 at Europe Smash 2026
Qualifier Diya Chitale stunned higher-ranked Sreeja Akula 3-0 at Europe Smash 2026 to reach the Round of 32, while Manush Shah exited in Round 64.
Diya Chitale produced one of the standout results for India at the WTT Europe Smash 2026, defeating compatriot Sreeja Akula in straight games to book her place in the women's singles Round of 32.
The 78th-ranked Chitale, who entered the main draw through qualifying, continued her impressive run by overcoming the higher-ranked Akula, currently World No. 67, 11-8, 11-6, 11-9.
The victory was particularly significant given Akula's recent form. The Indian paddler had returned from the WTT Champions Yokohama event with confidence, but her Europe Smash campaign ended at the opening hurdle.For Chitale, meanwhile, the result represents another important step in her development on the international circuit and rewards a strong qualifying campaign.
Chitale Completes Impressive Qualification Run
Chitale had already shown her form before entering the main draw. The Indian successfully negotiated the qualifying rounds, winning all her matches to secure a place among the main-draw field. In her final qualifying match, Chitale defeated Syndrela Das in a five-game battle, recovering from an early setback to win 8-11, 11-2, 7-11, 11-9, 11-6. That comeback demonstrated her ability to remain composed under pressure and adjust her game as the match progressed.
Having already played competitive matches in Sweden, Chitale entered the main draw with valuable court time behind her. That advantage was evident against Akula.
The opening game against Sreeja was closely contested, but Chitale maintained her composure during the important points to take it 11-8. Rather than allowing Akula to settle into the match, Chitale continued to apply pressure in the second game. Her consistency and ability to control rallies helped her establish an early advantage, and she closed out the game 11-6.
With her opponent under increasing pressure, Chitale maintained her level in the third. Akula attempted to extend the contest, but Chitale held her nerve in the closing stages to win 11-9 and complete a 3-0 victory. The result was particularly notable because of the ranking difference between the two players. Chitale entered the tournament ranked 78th in the world, while Akula was ranked 67th.
For a qualifier to defeat a higher-ranked compatriot without dropping a game at a WTT Grand Smash-level event is a significant result.
Manush Shah Falls in Five Games
India's men's singles campaign suffered a setback as Manush Shah was eliminated in the Round of 64. The World No. 40 faced Feng Yi-Hsin, ranked No. 42, in a closely contested encounter. Shah made a difficult start, losing the opening game 11-3. However, he responded impressively by taking the next two games 11-7 and 11-6 to move within one game of victory.
Feng refused to let the match slip away. The Taiwanese player levelled the contest by winning the fourth game 11-5 before producing another strong performance in the decider. Feng eventually won the fifth game 11-8 to complete a 3-2 victory.
The match underlined the fine margins at the highest level, with both players separated by only two ranking places before the contest.
Chitale's singles campaign is not her only assignment at Europe Smash. She is also part of India's mixed doubles combination with Manush Shah. The pair are seeded fifth in the mixed doubles draw and received a bye into the Round of 16. They will face Alexis Lebrun and Satsuki Odo in their opening match, giving Chitale another opportunity to test herself against elite opposition.
The mixed doubles event could provide a particularly interesting opportunity for India after Shah's early singles exit. With the pair already among the seeded combinations, expectations will be high. Chitale is also scheduled to compete in the women's doubles event with Yashaswini Ghorpade, adding to what is already a busy tournament for the young Indian paddler.
India entered the Europe Smash singles draw with three men's players, Manav Thakkar, Manush Shah and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, and three women, Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula and Chitale. With Shah now eliminated and Akula suffering an opening-round defeat, Chitale's progress becomes even more significant for India's singles campaign.
Her next opponent in the Round of 32 will provide another test, but the manner of her victory over Akula will give the qualifier considerable confidence. For Chitale, the tournament has already delivered a breakthrough result. She has navigated qualifying, defeated a higher-ranked compatriot in straight games and secured her place among the final 32 players in the women's singles draw.
The challenge now is to extend that run.
With singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles still ahead, Chitale has multiple opportunities to make an impact at one of the biggest events on the international table tennis calendar.
Her 3-0 win over Sreeja Akula may have been unexpected on paper, but it was the latest result in a tournament where the 18-year-old has steadily shown that she belongs on the biggest stage.
