Asian Games 2026: India Sweep Kazakhstan 3-0 to Reach Badminton Women’s Team Quarterfinals

India’s women’s badminton team made a commanding start to its Asian Games 2026 campaign, defeating Kazakhstan 3-0 in the Round of 16 to book a place in the quarterfinals.

PV Sindhu, Unnati Hooda and Tanvi Sharma all produced straight-game victories as India completed a clean sweep without dropping a single game in the tie. The result sets up a much tougher quarterfinal against hosts Japan, with the contest scheduled for September 22 at 6:00 AM IST.

Tanvi Sharma delivered the decisive result against Kazakhstan’s Namenova, winning 21-5, 21-10. The scoreline underlined India's dominance in the final match. Tanvi took control early and never allowed her opponent to establish a rhythm, securing the third point in straight games. The victory completed India's 3-0 win and ensured that all three Indian players competing in the tie contributed a match victory.

Most importantly, India did not drop a single game across the three matches, allowing the team to conserve energy ahead of a significantly more demanding quarterfinal.

Japan awaits in quarterfinals

India's reward for the victory is a quarterfinal against hosts Japan. The next tie is expected to present a substantially different challenge, with Japan possessing considerable depth across its women's badminton squad. The hosts will also have the advantage of competing in familiar surroundings and in front of home support.
