Asian Games 2026: India Women’s Hockey Team Thrash Indonesia 17-1 to Make It Two Wins in Two

India’s women’s hockey team continued its dominant start to the Asian Games 2026 campaign with another emphatic victory, defeating Indonesia 17-1 in their second Pool B match in Kakamigahara, Japan, on Monday.

The result followed India’s equally commanding 19-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their opening match, giving the defending continental campaigners two wins from two games. India once again combined relentless attacking pressure with an efficient penalty-corner routine, overwhelming Indonesia for large periods of the contest.

The victory also produced several individual milestones. Deepika, Navneet Kaur and Rutuja Dadaso Pisal all completed hat-tricks, while Deepika took her tournament tally to an extraordinary 11 goals after only two matches.

India’s penalty-corner specialist Deepika was once again at the centre of the attacking display. After scoring eight goals against Uzbekistan, she added three more against Indonesia to complete another hat-trick. Her first came in the eighth minute, when she converted a penalty corner to put India ahead.

She later added two more goals from penalty corners, scoring in the 40th minute to complete her hat-trick. With 11 goals in two matches, Deepika has emerged as one of the defining attacking players of India’s campaign so far.

India's overall scoring also reflected their versatility. Seven of their 17 goals came from penalty corners, while the remaining 10 were scored from field play.

India did not begin the match at full intensity. The opening minutes were relatively measured, and Navneet Kaur missed an early opportunity to open the scoring after failing to convert a penalty stroke. However, India quickly adjusted their approach and began putting sustained pressure on Indonesia.

Deepika eventually broke the deadlock in the eighth minute. Three minutes later, Sunelita Toppo doubled India's advantage with a field goal. Lalremsiami then converted a set-piece in the 12th minute before Rutuja scored her first goal to give India a 4-0 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

The pattern continued after the first break. Lalremsiami completed her brace within the opening minute of the second quarter, while Rutuja added her second in the 20th minute.

Teenage forward Sakshi Rana then opened her account with a field goal in the 25th minute, before India finished the half strongly. Deepika and Sunelita both converted penalty corners to score their second goals of the game, taking India into half-time with a commanding 9-0 advantage.

Indonesia find a goal, India respond immediately

Indonesia managed to breach the Indian defence early in the third quarter. Innes Aditya scored against the run of play to reduce the deficit, but the goal only triggered another burst from India. The Indian team responded with five goals in just six minutes.

Captain Salima Tete found the net in the 34th minute, followed by Navneet one minute later. Ishika added another in the 36th minute, before Rutuja completed her hat-trick in the 38th. Deepika then scored in the 40th minute to complete her own three-goal performance.

By the end of the third quarter, India had extended their advantage to 14-1.

Indonesia managed to keep India off the scoresheet for much of the opening 10 minutes of the final quarter. Several Indian attacks created promising opportunities, but the Indonesian defence managed to prevent the score from escalating further during that period.

India eventually found another burst of attacking momentum late in the match. Navneet struck twice in quick succession in the 56th and 57th minutes, completing her hat-trick in the process. Sakshi scored between those two goals to register her second of the match.

India finished with a 17-1 victory, maintaining their extraordinary scoring rate through their opening two matches.

The match was also significant away from the scoreboard. Veteran goalkeeper Savita became the most-capped Indian woman hockey player, making her 321st senior international appearance. She surpassed the previous mark held by former India striker Vandana Katariya, adding another landmark to a distinguished international career.

India top Pool B after two matches

With two victories from two matches, India sit at the top of Pool B and have established an impressive goal-scoring record.

They began their campaign with a 19-0 win over Uzbekistan before following it with the 17-1 victory against Indonesia. Across the two games, India have therefore scored 36 goals while conceding just one. The performances have highlighted India's depth in attack, with Deepika, Navneet, Rutuja, Lalremsiami, Sunelita, Sakshi, Salima and Ishika all contributing to the scoresheet against Indonesia.

More importantly, India have shown that their attacking threat does not rely on one avenue. They have scored from penalty corners, open play and sustained attacking movements. With the Pool B campaign progressing, India will now look to carry this momentum into their next fixtures as they continue their pursuit of another Asian Games medal.

For now, however, the message from Kakamigahara is emphatic: two matches, two wins and 36 goals for India’s women’s hockey team.
