Indian women’s football will mark another significant milestone on Saturday when the Young Tigresses begin their AFC U17 Asian Cup China 2026 campaign against Australia in Suzhou.

For the first time in 21 years, India will feature at the continental competition at the U17 level, carrying with them both expectation and excitement as a new generation prepares to test itself against Asia’s elite. The match, scheduled for May 2 at 5:00 PM IST, represents more than just the start of a tournament. It is another important chapter in what has become a landmark year for Indian women’s football. Earlier in 2026, both the senior national team and the U20 side ended long absences to appear at their respective AFC competitions. Now, the U17 team completes that rare sequence, underlining the growing structure and continuity within the women’s football ecosystem in India.

Head coach Pamela Conti believes the squad is mentally and physically prepared for the challenge ahead after months of continuous preparation.

“I think everyone is excited and really eager for it to start,” Conti said ahead of the opener. “We’ve been working for a long time, for many months. But it’s always a great feeling to play in important international tournaments, especially representing a big, big country like India. So yes, we are ready for it.”

India’s preparations for the tournament have been extensive and carefully planned. Since January, the squad has spent more than three months training primarily in Bengaluru, focusing on physical conditioning, tactical awareness, and technical refinement. The build-up also included valuable international exposure.

The Young Tigresses first won the SAFF U19 Women’s Championship in February before travelling to Myanmar in March, where they secured two wins against another Asian Cup-qualified side. In April, the team tested itself against physically strong Russian opposition in Sochi, playing three friendlies that offered important lessons ahead of the continental challenge.

Conti acknowledged that the recent days in China have been more about fine-tuning rather than heavy training sessions. “We've mostly been working on the tactical side, because the physical work had already been done earlier. We didn't want to push too hard physically in these last few days, so that the players don’t feel too heavy,” she explained.

The tournament itself is being hosted in Suzhou, where all 12 participating teams are staying in the same environment. Training and matches are taking place at the Suzhou Taihu Football Sports Centre, a modern complex featuring eight pitches and high-performance facilities. The setup has left a strong impression on the Indian camp. “Honestly, it's been perfect,” Conti said. “Today, it's beautiful with plenty of sunshine. Hopefully tomorrow has the same temperature, because it’s ideal for playing."

For the players, the Asian Cup represents both a reward for years of work and an opportunity to announce themselves on the continental stage. Many members of the squad were part of India’s successful qualification campaign and have also featured prominently in domestic youth competitions, including the SAFF U17 Women’s Championship and the IWL 2 with the Indian Arrows Women Juniors.

Defender Abhista Basnett spoke about the excitement within the squad as they prepare for their opening challenge.

“We are finally here after preparing for so many months. We are just one day away from our first game,” she said. “The feeling is very good. We are excited, and we will give our all. We have trained a lot over the past few months and worked very hard, so we are going to give our all out."

Australia, India’s first opponents, are expected to pose a stern physical challenge. However, the Indian camp believes the recent matches against Russia have already prepared them for that kind of intensity. “As we know, they are a very physical team, so we need to prepare ourselves accordingly. But we are not any less. We are going to give our all and fight against them,” Abhista said.

The Russian friendlies, despite the defeats, are seen as an important learning experience by the squad. “In Russia, we learned a lot. They were also a very physical team, so we understood how to play against such opponents. Even though we lost the games, we learned a lot, and those friendlies will help us in this Asian Cup,” she added.

Abhista herself has already enjoyed a memorable rise, including captaining the side during the third friendly in Russia despite being only 15 years old.

“It was the first time for me wearing the captain's armband, and it felt special. It was a different feeling to lead the team from the front," she said. Midfielder Julan Nongmaithem, who famously scored a last-minute winner against Kyrgyzstan during qualification and already owns a senior India cap, echoed the confidence inside the camp. “It feels really good to be here. We have been preparing for this for a long time, and now, finally, the day has come. We have to prove why we trained so hard,” Julan said.

The midfielder also highlighted the mentality the coaching staff wants the team to carry into the tournament. “Australia is a very tough team, but we also want to play tough football. The coach has told us to go in strong, make tackles, and play without fear. We have to be brave and give our 100 per cent,” she said.

That fearlessness could define India’s campaign in Suzhou. The Young Tigresses arrive without the burden of expectation but with growing belief, strengthened by months of preparation and inspired by the progress of the senior and U20 national teams earlier this year.

Saturday’s opener against Australia may be a daunting test, but for this young Indian side, it is also the chance to show that they belong on Asia’s biggest youth stage once again.
