Black Hawks U21 Crowned Inaugural Guardians Trophy Champions After Defeating Goa Guardians

Hyderabad Black Hawks U21 defeated hosts Goa Guardians U21 3-1 to win the inaugural Guardians Trophy 2026, with Sarthak claiming three individual awards.
Black Hawks U21 of Hyderabad made history on Sunday by becoming the inaugural champions of the Guardians Trophy 2026, defeating hosts Goa Guardians U21 3-1 in the final at the Don Bosco Oratory in Panjim.
The victory brought the curtain down on three days of intense U21 volleyball in Goa, with youth teams representing all 10 Prime Volleyball League franchises competing for the inaugural title. Hyderabad's triumph was built on a strong knockout-stage run and a composed performance in the final, where the Black Hawks recovered from losing the second set to beat the hosts 16-7, 11-15, 16-14, 15-8.
The championship also proved to be a personal triumph for Sarthak, who dominated the individual awards by winning the MVP of the Tournament, Best Server and Best Opposite honours.
Hyderabad finishes the tournament in style.
The final brought together two teams that had taken contrasting routes to the championship match. Goa Guardians U21 entered the final unbeaten, having navigated the group stage successfully before surviving a dramatic five-set semifinal against Mumbai Meteors Youth. Hyderabad, meanwhile, had produced one of the most commanding performances of the knockout stage, defeating Ahmedabad Defenders U21 in straight sets.
The Black Hawks carried that momentum into the final. They immediately established control in the opening set, producing a dominant 16-7 victory to put the hosts under pressure. Playing in front of their home supporters, however, Goa responded strongly.
The Guardians raised their intensity in the second set and took advantage of the momentum to win 15-11, levelling the final at 1-1 and bringing themselves back into contention.
The championship was now effectively reduced to a best-of-two contest.
The third set decides the momentum.
The third set proved to be the turning point. With the two sides closely matched, Hyderabad and Goa traded points in a tense battle. Neither team was able to establish a decisive advantage, but the Black Hawks held their nerve at the crucial moments. Hyderabad eventually edged the set 16-14, moving within one set of history.
That narrow victory changed the complexion of the final. Goa now had to win the fourth set to keep its home title hopes alive, while Hyderabad had the opportunity to close out the inaugural championship. The Black Hawks seized it. They produced their strongest volleyball of the final set, pulling away from Goa to win 15-8 and complete a 3-1 victory.
The final score read: Goa Guardians U21 1-3 Hyderabad Black Hawks U21
7-16, 15-11, 14-16, 8-15
With that, Hyderabad became the first name to be etched onto the Guardians Trophy.
One of the biggest stories of the tournament was the performance of Sarthak. The Hyderabad player walked away with three major individual honours, being named MVP of the Tournament, Best Server and Best Opposite. His all-round contribution was a key component of the Black Hawks' championship campaign and highlighted the quality of talent emerging through the U21 system.
Hyderabad also collected the Best Attacker award through Deepak. Goa's impressive run was reflected in the remaining individual honours. Suraj was named Best Blocker, Arjun received the Best Setter award, and Yogesh was recognised as the Best Libero. The spread of awards across the two finalists underlined the competitive quality of the tournament.
Although Goa Guardians U21 fell short in the championship match, their campaign remains one of the defining stories of the inaugural tournament. The hosts went through the entire group stage unbeaten before facing Mumbai Meteors Youth in a thrilling semifinal. Mumbai won the opening set 16-14, but Goa immediately responded by taking the next two sets 15-12 and 15-10. Mumbai refused to surrender, winning the fourth set 15-12 to force a deciding fifth.
Goa eventually held their nerve, winning the final set 15-10 to secure their place in the championship match. That run made Goa the first team to reach a Guardians Trophy final on home soil, but Hyderabad proved too strong when the title was ultimately decided.
Beyond the result, the Guardians Trophy was created with a broader objective: providing India's emerging volleyball players with a competitive platform at the franchise level. The inaugural tournament brought together the U21 squads of all 10 Prime Volleyball League franchises, allowing young players to experience competition within a professional franchise ecosystem.
For many of these players, tournaments such as the Guardians Trophy represent an important bridge between age-group volleyball and senior-level competition. Regular matches against players from other franchise systems can provide valuable exposure while allowing coaches and teams to assess developing talent in a competitive environment.
The tournament was also an initiative created by Goa Guardians, with the objective of strengthening the pathway for young Indian volleyball players. The championship victory earned Hyderabad Black Hawks U21 ₹1.20 lakh in prize money, while Goa Guardians U21 received ₹60,000 as runners-up.
More importantly, Hyderabad leaves Goa with a place in the history of the competition. The first edition of the Guardians Trophy has produced its first champion, its first MVP and a platform that brought together some of India's most promising young volleyball talent.
For the Black Hawks, the achievement belongs to a team that recovered from Goa's second-set response, won the pivotal third set and then closed out the final with authority.
For Sarthak, it was an unforgettable tournament. And for Indian volleyball, the inaugural Guardians Trophy has provided another stage for the next generation to emerge.
