BWF World Championships 2026 Day 4: PV Sindhu, Ayush Shetty and Satwik-Chirag lead India’s Round of 16 challenge

PV Sindhu, Ayush Shetty, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty and four other Indian players and pairs will be in action in the Round of 16 at the BWF World Championships 2026 in New Delhi.
India will have five entries in action across all five categories on Day 4 of the BWF World Championships 2026 in New Delhi, with PV Sindhu, Ayush Shetty, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand and Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto battling for places in the quarter-finals.
After a dramatic third day that brought impressive victories as well as heartbreak for Lakshya Sen and Unnati Hooda, the focus now shifts to the Round of 16. The day presents India with a mix of favourable opportunities and major challenges against higher-ranked opponents.
Former world champion PV Sindhu will once again carry significant expectations as she takes on third seed Wang Zhi Yi of China in one of the biggest matches of the day. Sindhu, seeded ninth, entered the pre-quarterfinals after a straight-games win over Canada’s Zhang Wen Yu, winning 21-16, 21-17.
The clash against Wang will be a significantly tougher examination. The Chinese shuttler has enjoyed the better of their recent rivalry, although Sindhu has shown in the past that she remains capable of producing her best badminton on the World Championships stage. Their overall head-to-head record currently favours Wang 5-3, making the match an important test of Sindhu’s ability to challenge one of the leading players in women’s singles.
Sindhu has already spoken about being prepared for long rallies and physically demanding matches. Against Wang, patience and consistency could prove just as important as attacking intent. The winner could potentially move into a challenging quarter-final section, making Thursday’s contest crucial for Sindhu’s hopes of another World Championships medal.
Before Sindhu takes the court, Ayush Shetty will continue his remarkable campaign against Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan. Ayush has been one of India’s standout performers so far in New Delhi, particularly after producing one of the tournament’s biggest upsets by defeating defending champion and world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi in his opening match.
The Indian recovered from a game down to beat Shi 21-14, 13-21, 21-19 before following it up with a dominant 21-8, 21-10 victory over Sri Lanka’s Dumindu Abeywickrama. The two victories have demonstrated both his ability to compete with the world’s elite and his capacity to avoid complacency against lower-ranked opponents.
However, Farhan presents another major challenge. The Indonesian, seeded 11th and ranked 12th in the world, has also looked impressive in reaching the Round of 16. He defeated South Korea’s Yoo Tae-bin 21-17, 21-12 before comfortably overcoming Finland’s Joakim Oldorff 21-12, 21-9.
The rivalry between the two young players is finely balanced. Farhan holds a narrow 4-3 advantage in their head-to-head record, although Ayush won their most recent meeting at the China Open 2026 in three games. Their history also stretches back to junior badminton, with Farhan having beaten Ayush in the semifinals of the 2023 World Junior Championships.
For India, the clash offers an opportunity to see whether Ayush can build on his breakthrough victory over Shi Yu Qi and make a deep run at his first senior World Championships.
The biggest Indian medal hopes in doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, will finally begin their on-court campaign against Malaysia’s Junaidi Arif and Roy King Yap. The fifth seeds received a bye in the opening round and then progressed to the Round of 16 after their Scottish opponents withdrew because of Alexander Dunn’s injury.
While the walkover ensured their progress, it also means Satwik and Chirag enter their first match without competitive match rhythm. Their Malaysian opponents are ranked outside the top 15, but the Indians cannot afford a slow start. Satwik and Chirag hold a 4-0 head-to-head advantage and will start as favourites to reach the quarter-finals.
India’s women’s doubles challenge will be led by Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, who face seventh seeds Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi of Japan. Ranked 39th in the world, the Indian pair face a difficult task against the experienced Japanese combination and trail 0-1 in their head-to-head record.
Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto will also face a seeded Chinese pair in mixed doubles. After their comfortable 21-11, 21-11 victory over Macau’s Leong Iok Chong and Weng Chi Ng, the 15th-seeded Indians now meet sixth seeds Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui. Guo and Chen hold a 2-0 head-to-head advantage, but Dhruv and Tanisha will take confidence from their dominant second-round performance. A victory would represent one of India’s biggest upsets of the day.
With five Indian entries competing across five categories, Day 4 could prove decisive for the host nation’s medal hopes. Sindhu’s experience, Ayush’s breakthrough momentum and Satwik-Chirag’s pedigree give India multiple reasons for optimism as the World Championships moves closer to the business end.
