Chennaiyin FC have rebuilt their squad for ISL 2026–27 under Clifford Miranda. Can Ramon Tanque, Madih Talal and new signings deliver a top-six finish?

Chennaiyin FC have undertaken a substantial squad overhaul ahead of the 2026–27 Indian Super League (ISL) season, attempting to address the shortcomings that left them 13th in the previous campaign.

With a restructured defence, a revamped midfield and Brazilian striker Ramon Tanque leading the attacking rebuild, the Marina Machans are betting on greater mobility, creativity and tactical flexibility under head coach Clifford Miranda.

The scale of the changes reflects the urgency of the task. Chennaiyin scored just nine goals during their disappointing 2025–26 campaign, highlighting the need for a more productive attacking structure. Their recruitment has focused on players with ISL experience, younger domestic options and overseas additions capable of improving the team's technical quality.

Chennaiyin have brought in players across all departments, including Madih Talal, Nikola Stojanovic, Emmanuel Imanishimwe, Nuno Reis, Glan Martins, Ayush Dev Chhetri, Brison Fernandes and Ramon Tanque. The recruitment combines established professionals with players entering an important phase of their careers.

Talal is particularly significant to the attacking rebuild. The French midfielder previously demonstrated his creative potential in the ISL, recording six goals and 10 assists in 22 appearances for Punjab FC during the 2023–24 season. His ability to operate between the lines and create opportunities could help address Chennaiyin's lack of attacking productivity.

Stojanovic offers another experienced midfield option. Having played in several European leagues before establishing himself in Indian football, the Serbian midfielder brings passing quality and experience to a department that needs to move the ball forward with greater purpose. His partnership with Talal could prove central to Chennaiyin's ability to progress from possession into dangerous attacking positions.

The club have also invested in domestic depth. Ayush Dev Chhetri provides midfield options, while Brison Fernandes and Bryce Miranda add width and attacking movement. Namgyal Bhutia and Muhammed Saheef strengthen the defensive rotation, while Dippendu Biswas offers another centre-back option. The objective is to create a squad capable of adapting to different opponents rather than relying on a small group of senior players.

Chennaiyin's defensive reconstruction is just as important as their attacking additions. Portuguese centre-back Nuno Reis brings experience, while Imanishimwe offers versatility across the defensive line. Biswas and Saheef provide domestic alternatives, giving Miranda more combinations to consider.

The challenge will be ensuring that the new defensive unit develops cohesion quickly. A defence built around a more aggressive approach must maintain compactness when possession is lost. If the full-backs advance simultaneously, the midfield must protect the spaces behind them and prevent opponents from exploiting counter-attacks.

This balance could determine whether Chennaiyin become a more consistent side. New signings can improve individual quality, but defensive organisation depends on communication, positioning and coordinated movement. Those qualities will take time to develop across a substantially changed squad.

Can Ramon Tanque solve the goal-scoring problem?

Tanque's arrival is one of the most important elements of Chennaiyin's recruitment strategy. The Brazilian forward joined on loan from Indonesian champions Persib Bandung after scoring eight goals in 28 appearances across competitions during the 2025–26 campaign. He had previously finished as the Cambodian Premier League's leading scorer with 21 goals in 28 appearances for Visakha FC in 2024–25.

His movement, physical presence and ability to attack space give Chennaiyin a different attacking option. However, the striker's effectiveness will depend on the quality of service he receives. Talal's creativity, Stojanovic's distribution and the contribution of the wide players must combine to create regular opportunities inside the penalty area.

Chennaiyin's opening match offered an initial indication of the work still required. They drew 1–1 away to FC Goa on 10 October, with Irfan Yadwad scoring for the Marina Machans. The result provided a point, but the challenge now is to turn promising attacking phases into consistent goal production across the campaign.

Miranda has several options with the new squad. A 4-2-3-1 formation could provide a foundation, with two midfielders protecting the defence, Talal operating behind the striker and the wingers stretching opposition backlines. The system could also transition into a 4-3-3 when Chennaiyin need greater control in midfield.

The key will be maintaining balance between pressing and defensive security. Aggressive full-backs and forward runs can create overloads, but they also leave space for opponents to exploit. A reliable midfield screen and disciplined defensive positioning will be essential.

The squad's depth also requires attention. Injuries or inconsistent form among the primary creators could place additional pressure on younger forwards, including Shubham Rawat and Irfan Yadwad. Their contributions may prove important as Chennaiyin navigate a demanding schedule.

Chennaiyin's recruitment suggests a clear attempt to move away from the limitations of the previous campaign. The squad now has more options in midfield, greater defensive variety and a new focal point in attack.

Nevertheless, recruitment alone will not guarantee a turnaround. The new players must establish partnerships, Tanque must translate his scoring record into ISL performances, and Miranda must find a tactical structure that delivers both attacking output and defensive reliability.

A top-six challenge is a realistic ambition to work towards, but it will depend on consistency rather than individual signings. Chennaiyin have made the changes necessary to give themselves a fresh start. The next task is turning that renewed potential into results on the pitch.
