Indian recurve archer Dhiraj Bommadevara etched his name into the history books by winning his maiden individual Archery World Cup gold medal at the Antalya Archery World Cup, defeating South Korea’s Olympic and World Championship medallist Lee Woo-seok 7-3 in a high-quality men’s recurve final.

The 24-year-old Paris Olympian produced a composed display to overcome one of the sport’s biggest names, prevailing through set scores of 30-29, 29-28, 27-27, 27-29 and 30-29. His perfect final series of three consecutive 10s sealed a memorable victory and confirmed his arrival among the world’s elite recurve archers.

The triumph also secured Dhiraj a place in the 2026 Archery World Cup Final and completed a remarkable day in Antalya after he had earlier clinched mixed team gold.

Dhiraj was in outstanding form throughout the competition, dropping very few points on his way to the championship. He began his campaign with a convincing 6-2 victory over Germany’s opponent in the Round of 32, before recording another 6-2 win against Iran in the Round of 16. The Indian continued his dominant run in the quarterfinals, comfortably defeating Italy’s representative by the same 6-2 margin.

In the semifinals, Dhiraj faced Germany’s Moritz Wieser and produced another assured performance to claim a 6-4 victory, booking a blockbuster final against Lee Woo-seok.

The championship match lived up to expectations. Lee, a Paris Olympic bronze medallist and Olympic team champion with multiple World Championship medals, pushed Dhiraj throughout the contest. However, the Indian held his nerve under pressure and delivered flawless shooting in the decisive final set to emerge a deserving champion.

The gold medal is significant on multiple fronts. It marks Dhiraj Bommadevara’s first-ever individual Archery World Cup title and his third World Cup gold medal overall. It is also his 12th career World Cup medal, underlining the consistency he has displayed on the international circuit despite his young age.

Perhaps more importantly, Dhiraj became only the third Indian male recurve archer to win an individual World Cup gold medal, joining an exclusive list that includes Jayanta Talukdar and Atanu Das.

Talukdar achieved the feat in 2006 and 2009, while Atanu claimed gold in 2021. Dhiraj’s victory in Antalya now adds another landmark chapter to India’s recurve archery history.

Overall, he becomes only the fifth Indian recurve archer to win an individual World Cup gold across both men’s and women’s categories.

Dhiraj’s triumph is also India’s first individual Archery World Cup gold medal of the 2026 season, further strengthening the country’s growing reputation in recurve archery. The Antalya title represents the fourth World Cup gold won by India this season and the third in recurve events, reflecting the impressive depth currently present in the national programme.

His qualification for the World Cup Final provides another opportunity later in the year to compete against the season’s best performers for one of the sport’s most prestigious honours.

What makes the victory even more impressive is the calibre of the opponent. Lee Woo-seok entered the final as one of the favourites, carrying an Olympic bronze medal, Olympic team gold and multiple World Championship podium finishes. South Korea has long dominated recurve archery, making victories over its leading athletes especially significant.

Dhiraj, however, never appeared overawed by the occasion. His ability to consistently shoot high scores, particularly the perfect trio of 10s in the closing moments, demonstrated exceptional composure and technical precision. The final showcased not only his talent but also his mental strength under championship pressure.

Double Gold Caps Memorable Antalya Campaign

Earlier in the day, Dhiraj had already celebrated success by winning the mixed team gold medal, making Antalya a tournament to remember. Adding the individual title completed a spectacular double and reinforced his status as one of India’s brightest prospects heading into the next Olympic cycle. At just 24 years of age, Dhiraj has steadily built an impressive international résumé, and this latest achievement could prove to be a defining moment in his career.

With confidence soaring and a World Cup Final berth secured, the Hyderabad archer has firmly established himself among the leading names in world recurve archery.

For Indian archery, the victory is another milestone in a season filled with promise. For Dhiraj Bommadevara, it is the culmination of years of progress and the beginning of what could be an even more decorated chapter on the international stage.
