Diamond Harbour FC Win IFL 2025-26 Title After Dramatic Injury-Time Equaliser Against Dempo

Diamond Harbour FC completed a remarkable rise through the Indian football pyramid after a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser from Hugo Díaz secured the Indian Football League 2025-26 title in Goa on Sunday.
Trailing for most of the second half against Dempo SC, Diamond Harbour looked set to postpone their title celebrations before Díaz rose highest in the first minute of injury time to score a crucial equaliser and seal a 1-1 draw at the PJN Stadium. The result was enough to take the West Bengal side to 29 points and confirm both the league title and promotion to the Indian Super League 2026-27 with one match still remaining in the season.
It completed an extraordinary journey for the club, who have now achieved three successive promotions in three seasons after previously winning I-League 3 and I-League 2.
The significance of the achievement was evident at full-time as players and coaching staff celebrated emotionally after surviving an extremely tense evening against an impressive Dempo side.
Knowing that only a point was required to secure the title, Diamond Harbour entered the contest carrying enormous pressure. That tension was visible throughout the opening stages as the visitors struggled to settle into their usual rhythm. Simple passes went astray, attacking movements lacked fluidity and Dempo quickly sensed an opportunity to disrupt the title celebrations.
The Goan side started brightly and created the first meaningful opportunity after capitalising on a defensive error from Diamond Harbour. Sebastián Gutiérrez found space outside the box but dragged his effort narrowly wide of the post. Dempo continued to look sharper and more energetic during the first half. Playing without the pressure attached to the visitors, the hosts moved the ball confidently and repeatedly tested the Diamond Harbour backline.
Gutiérrez remained at the centre of most attacking moves and again came close with a long-range strike that drifted just wide. Moments later, José Luis Moreno nearly produced the breakthrough when his near-post flick from a corner forced Melroy Assisi into an important goal-line clearance. While Diamond Harbour looked below their usual attacking standards, they still managed to create occasional moments of danger.
Mikel Kortazar wasted a good opportunity after meeting a set-piece delivery inside the box before Dempo goalkeeper Ashish Sibi produced an excellent save to deny Hugo Díaz following a long throw situation. Despite Dempo’s attacking momentum, the visitors defended resolutely enough to survive the opening half and the match remained goalless at the interval.
The breakthrough finally arrived five minutes into the second half.
After Seigoumang Doungel was brought down near the edge of the penalty area, Dempo won a dangerous free-kick in a central position. Marcus Joseph stepped up and although his initial strike was blocked by the defensive wall, the experienced striker reacted quickest to the rebound and smashed the ball into the top corner.
The goal sparked huge celebrations among the Dempo players while suddenly creating genuine tension around Diamond Harbour’s title ambitions. Joseph’s strike, his eighth goal of the season, injected fresh belief into the home side while simultaneously increasing the nervousness among the visitors. Diamond Harbour head coach Kibu Vicuña reacted by introducing Luka Majcen, Bryce Miranda and R. Ramdinthara in an attempt to inject urgency into the attack.
However, the substitutions initially failed to change the flow of the contest.
In fact, Dempo continued to look the more threatening side for large parts of the second half. Gutiérrez repeatedly found dangerous spaces between midfield and defence, creating several uncomfortable moments for Diamond Harbour. Aubin Kouakou nearly doubled the lead after rising highest to meet a free-kick delivery, only for goalkeeper Dheeraj Singh to produce an excellent low save.
As the clock continued ticking down, Diamond Harbour increasingly looked short of ideas in the final third. Their buildup lacked sharpness and Dempo’s defensive organisation continued frustrating every attacking attempt.
Then came the rain. A heavy downpour during the final 10 minutes added another layer of chaos to an already tense contest. The wet surface made passing difficult and both teams struggled to maintain control in possession.
But just when it appeared Dempo would hold on for victory, Diamond Harbour produced the decisive moment that defined their season.
With eight minutes of stoppage time added, substitute Girik Khosla delivered a brilliant cross into the penalty area. Hugo Díaz drifted away from his marker perfectly before timing his jump superbly and powering a header past the goalkeeper. The moment instantly transformed the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Diamond Harbour’s bench erupted in celebration as players sprinted towards Díaz knowing the goal had effectively secured the championship. For Dempo, it was a heartbreaking end after producing one of their strongest performances of the campaign. For Diamond Harbour, though, it represented the defining moment of a historic season.
From I-League 3 to the Indian Super League in just three years, the club’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary.
And fittingly, their greatest triumph yet arrived in the most dramatic fashion possible.
