Lalrinliana Hnamte: From a Quiet Durand Cup Arrival to SC Delhi’s Midfield Standout

Ranchi does not usually offer quiet entrances. On August 4, under a sky threatening rain and with the Birsa Munda Stadium preparing for another Durand Cup contest, Lalrinliana Hnamte walked onto the pitch for his first competitive appearance for SC Delhi. The 23-year-old midfielder from Mizoram was beginning a new chapter with a club still building its identity.

What followed was anything but quiet.

SC Delhi went into half-time trailing Jamshedpur FC, but six minutes after the restart, Hnamte pounced on a goalkeeping error to level the contest. Five minutes later, he struck again, finishing calmly with his left foot after being released down the left.

Two goals in five minutes transformed the match and announced Hnamte's arrival in unmistakable fashion. For a player making his competitive debut for a new club, it was the kind of performance that immediately changes expectations. Yet Hnamte himself was reluctant to make the moment about him.

Asked about the significance of scoring twice on his debut, Hnamte immediately shifted attention towards his teammates. “It’s not about me; it’s about my teammates,” he said. “They help me a lot, and as a team, we are playing well. When a team plays well and everyone does their job, it becomes about more than just one person.”

It is a response that mirrors the way his career has developed without sudden leaps but through a series of gradual steps. And his performances for SC Delhi have already suggested that the debut was no isolated moment. On August 10, SC Delhi returned to the Birsa Munda Stadium and produced another emphatic result, defeating Indian Air Force FT 7-0.

Amid goals from Peña, Rodriguinho and Duvan Mina, Hnamte found the net again. He controlled a loose ball on his chest inside the penalty area before calmly finishing past the goalkeeper. It was his third goal of the tournament, adding another significant contribution to SC Delhi's perfect group-stage campaign.

To understand the midfielder's calmness, it helps to go back to Mizoram. For Hnamte, football was never something he discovered later in life. It was almost the only sport he knew. “From a very young age, all I did was kick a football,” he said. “My father gave me a ball when I was little, and since childhood, the only game I have ever played is football. Nothing else.”

That early relationship with the game eventually took him through the academy systems of FC Pune City and Hyderabad FC. His progression then led to the Indian Super League, where he made his debut for East Bengal during the 2021-22 season. There was an interesting symmetry to that first appearance. His ISL debut came against the same club he would later score twice against on his SC Delhi debut.

After East Bengal, Hnamte spent two seasons with Mohun Bagan SG. Those years were not necessarily defined by regular starting opportunities, but they provided another important component of his development: patience. It was at Chennaiyin FC, from 2024 onwards, that Hnamte began establishing himself more consistently in the starting XI.

More than 70 ISL appearances followed, along with recognition at the India Under-23 level. The journey was not spectacular in its speed.

It was significant in its accumulation.

Trust has become another part of his game.

SC Delhi has provided Hnamte with another important ingredient: responsibility. Head coach Tomasz Pawel Tchórz has placed significant trust in the midfielder, giving him a regular starting role and clearly defining his responsibilities. “He trusts me a lot and clearly explains to me what to do and what not to do on the pitch,” Hnamte said.

That trust has clearly mattered. For a young player moving into another new environment, knowing exactly what is expected can make the transition considerably easier.

Hnamte also understands that such trust has to be repaid through performances. His response so far has been convincing: two goals to turn around his first match, followed by another goal in a seven-goal victory.

A historic tournament as a platform

The Durand Cup, now in its 135th edition, provides an unusually significant stage for a player at this point in his career. The tournament predates Indian independence and has witnessed generations of Indian footballers establish themselves. For Hnamte, it represents an opportunity not simply to contribute to SC Delhi's campaign but to build momentum for the next phase of his career.

He recognises that potential without becoming consumed by it. “This tournament can help me a lot to grow both as a player and as a person,” he said.

His immediate focus, however, remains collective. “If we do well in these three games as a team, I hope we can advance, achieve something bigger and make it to the next level,” he added. That group-stage objective has already been achieved.

SC Delhi finished with a perfect record and advanced to the quarter-finals as Group C winners. Now the stakes increase.

From three goals to something bigger

Hnamte entered the Durand Cup quietly, even if the circumstances around him were anything but. Rain, pressure and a one-goal deficit greeted him on his first competitive night with SC Delhi. Five minutes later, he had changed the game. A week later, he had three goals and a perfect group-stage record alongside him.

The next challenge is the knockout stage, where every mistake carries greater consequences and every performance can define a campaign. For Hnamte, the opportunity is straightforward: continue doing what brought him here. The teenager who once spent his childhood simply kicking a football in Mizoram is now a 23-year-old midfielder making his mark on one of Indian football's oldest stages.

The Durand Cup has produced countless stories over its 135 editions. Lalrinliana Hnamte has already written the opening chapter of his. The question now is how much further he can take it.
