NorthEast United host Kerala Blasters in ISL Gameweek 2 on October 18. Juan Pedro Benali and Ashley Westwood discuss tactics, team preparation and the 7:30 PM kick-off.

NorthEast United FC will host Kerala Blasters FC in a highly anticipated Gameweek 2 encounter of the MG Indian Super League (ISL) at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday, October 18.

Both teams enter the fixture on the back of opening-match victories, setting up a contest in which early-season momentum and tactical discipline could prove decisive.

The Highlanders edged Mohun Bagan Super Giant 1-0 through a late winner, while Kerala Blasters began their campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over Inter Kashi at the Balewadi Stadium. With both sides having collected three points from their opening fixtures, the meeting offers an opportunity to build a stronger foundation for the season.

NorthEast United head coach Juan Pedro Benali has urged his players to remain grounded despite their impressive opening result, while Kerala Blasters manager Ashley Westwood is preparing his team for the tactical challenges posed by the hosts.

Benali acknowledged the quality of Westwood and the balance within the Kerala Blasters squad, describing the upcoming contest as a tactical battle between two teams still at the beginning of a long campaign.

The NorthEast United coach stressed that his side cannot afford to become complacent after defeating Mohun Bagan Super Giant. While the late victory provided an encouraging start, Benali believes consistency, hard work and the ability to avoid mistakes will be more important over the course of the season.

“It’s like a game of chess. Ashley is a very good coach, talented and smart. These are the first steps of a long marathon. We need to stay focused, be humble, down to earth, work more and try not to make mistakes,” Benali said on the eve of the match.

His comments underline the importance of maintaining discipline against a Kerala side that has also started the season positively. NorthEast United will look to build on the confidence generated by their opening win, but Benali is aware that the demands of the second fixture will be different.

The Highlanders will also need to manage the expectations that accompany a winning start. Against Kerala, their ability to remain organised and execute their plans could determine whether they secure another positive result in front of their home supporters.

Westwood expects a tactical challenge

Westwood has identified NorthEast United’s tactical flexibility as a key feature of their performance against Mohun Bagan Super Giant. The Kerala Blasters coach expects his players to remain organised while finding ways to counter the Highlanders’ approach.

However, Westwood was also candid about the stage of development his team has reached. With new players arriving and limited preparation time, Kerala are still working towards the style of football he wants them to produce consistently.

Their 2-0 victory over Inter Kashi provided a positive opening result, but Westwood acknowledged that the defensive performance still requires improvement. “We didn't really have a good game at the back (against Inter Kashi), but we kept a clean sheet so it was a good start of the season. We're trying to improve because new players have come in and we're trying to help each other at the back,” Westwood said ahead of Sunday's encounter.

The clean sheet was an encouraging outcome, although the coach's assessment suggests that Kerala cannot rely solely on the scoreline as an indication of their defensive progress. Better coordination and greater understanding between players will be important as the team settles into the campaign.

The Guwahati fixture will provide another opportunity to assess that progress against an opponent coming off a narrow but significant victory.

With both teams having won their opening matches, Sunday's contest carries importance beyond the immediate points on offer. Another victory would allow either side to strengthen its start and build confidence ahead of a demanding run of fixtures.

For NorthEast United, the priority will be to reproduce the defensive resolve and late-game effectiveness that helped them overcome Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Benali's emphasis on humility and focus reflects his determination to ensure that the opening result does not lead to complacency.

Kerala Blasters, meanwhile, will aim to combine the attacking output displayed against Inter Kashi with a more assured defensive performance. Westwood's comments indicate that the team's early-season development remains a work in progress, making the Guwahati encounter a useful test of its organisation and adaptability.

The match will also offer an early indication of how effectively both coaches can adjust their tactical approaches against an opponent that has already demonstrated the ability to secure results.

Kerala Blasters are scheduled to return to their home ground the following week to face Mumbai City FC. A positive result in Guwahati would provide additional momentum ahead of that fixture.

NorthEast United FC will face Kerala Blasters FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati on Sunday, October 18, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30 PM IST. Fans can watch the match live on the MG ISL YouTube channel and SonyLIV.

With both sides arriving after victories, the encounter promises a closely contested early-season test. Benali wants NorthEast United to remain grounded, while Westwood is looking for greater defensive cohesion from Kerala.

The team that executes its tactical plan more effectively could take an important step forward in the opening weeks of the ISL campaign.
