ISL 2026–27 Matchweek 1 Review: Late Winners, Tactical Upsets and Emerging Indian Talent Define Opening Round

The ISL 2026–27 opening matchweek produced 16 goals, late winners and tactical upsets as Bengaluru FC, Kerala Blasters and NorthEast United made winning starts.
The 2026–27 Indian Super League (ISL) season began with an eventful opening matchweek, producing 16 goals across six fixtures and an average of 2.67 goals per match.
Late winners, resilient defensive displays and influential performances from Indian youngsters shaped the opening round, while Bengaluru FC, Kerala Blasters FC and NorthEast United FC provided contrasting examples of how tactical execution could determine results.
Four of the six matches were decided in the 85th minute or later, underlining the importance of late-game management and the impact of substitutions. The opening round also offered an early indication that possession alone would not guarantee success, as NorthEast United and Churchill Brothers secured victories against established opponents despite recording some of the lowest passing totals.
Bengaluru FC opened their campaign with a 3–2 victory over Sporting Club Delhi at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on October 10. The match featured attacking momentum swings before Menno Koch headed home the winning goal in the 89th minute.
Bengaluru's ability to recover and finish strongly reflected the attacking threat they generated throughout the contest. Borja Martínez was central to their performance, scoring twice on his debut and earning a reported match rating of 9.5/10. His movement from wide areas into the half-spaces repeatedly challenged Delhi's defensive structure, while his second goal arrived in the 75th minute.
Soham Varshneya supplied the cross for Koch's late winner, highlighting the influence of substitutions in the closing stages.
Punjab FC also left it late to secure three points, defeating Odisha FC 2–1 in Ludhiana on October 14. Raphaël Messi Bouli scored in the opening minute and returned to settle the contest with a stoppage-time winner in the 96th minute.
Churchill Brothers produced another notable result by beating Mumbai City FC 2–1 on October 11. Sebastián Gutiérrez scored the decisive goal in the 86th minute, while Sergio Llamas converted a penalty in the 95th minute for Mumbai City.
NorthEast United completed the round's most striking upset on October 12, defeating Mohun Bagan Super Giant 1–0 in Guwahati. Substitute Jithin M.S. scored in the 92nd minute, rewarding a disciplined defensive performance against sustained pressure.
Possession did not guarantee victories
Bengaluru FC led the round's passing statistics, completing 512 accurate passes against Sporting Club Delhi. Their approach relied on controlled possession, high fullbacks and switches of play designed to stretch the opposition's defensive shape.
However, the results involving NorthEast United and Churchill Brothers demonstrated the effectiveness of a more direct approach.
NorthEast United completed just 245 accurate passes, while Churchill Brothers recorded 244. Both teams won despite spending less time on the ball than their opponents. NorthEast United absorbed 19 shots from Mohun Bagan, including six on target, before securing victory through Jithin's late strike.
Churchill Brothers also prioritised defensive organisation and direct progression rather than attempting to match Mumbai City's circulation-based approach. Their success illustrated how compact defensive structures and well-timed forward transitions could disrupt teams seeking to dominate possession.
Kerala Blasters FC combined greater control with an efficient attacking performance, defeating Inter Kashi 2–0 on October 11. Captain Vibin Mohanan opened the scoring in the 18th minute after receiving a cross from Korou Singh. Andre Green added a second in the 94th minute, with Mohammed Sanan providing the assist.
Goalkeeping performances were central to several results. NorthEast United's Gurmeet Singh made six saves to preserve his clean sheet against Mohun Bagan. Facing a frontline featuring Jason Cummings, Jamie Maclaren, Liston Colaco and Sahal Abdul Samad, Gurmeet repeatedly denied the visitors and helped his team withstand a sustained attacking spell.
Sporting Club Delhi goalkeeper Nora Fernandes also produced a significant individual performance despite the defeat to Bengaluru. His seven saves kept Delhi competitive before Bengaluru's late attacking pressure proved decisive.
FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC played out a 1–1 draw on October 10. Goa registered 21 tackles as they attempted to disrupt Chennaiyin's progression through midfield. Irfan Yadwad scored for Chennaiyin in the 63rd minute, while Chiki equalised for Goa with a header from a set piece in the 75th minute.
The result reflected the tension between aggressive pressing and the spaces that could emerge when the initial defensive line was bypassed.
The opening matchweek also highlighted the growing involvement of domestic under-23 players. According to the supplied data, 14 under-23 players started across the six fixtures, while 28 featured when substitutes were included.
Kerala Blasters captain Vibin Mohanan was among the standout young Indian performers. He scored the opener against Inter Kashi, completed 82% of his passes and helped control the midfield during his 67 minutes on the pitch.
NorthEast United's Nikhil Barla played 89 minutes in a disciplined defensive performance against Mohun Bagan. Odisha FC's Thoiba Singh scored against Punjab FC, while Lalrinliana Hnamte assisted Sporting Club Delhi's first-half equaliser against Bengaluru.
These contributions suggested that young Indian players were being trusted with substantive tactical responsibilities rather than being limited to brief substitute appearances.
Borja Martínez leads individual honours
Borja Martínez emerged as the standout attacking performer of the opening round. His two goals, seven shots and reported league-leading expected-assists output helped Bengaluru secure a dramatic victory.
Gurmeet Singh's six saves earned him recognition as one of the leading Indian performers, while Vibin Mohanan's goal and midfield control underlined his importance to Kerala Blasters' successful start.
The opening matchweek established several early themes for the season: late-game concentration remained decisive, low-possession teams could punish opponents through transitions, and domestic youngsters were increasingly influential in high-pressure situations.
With 16 goals across six matches and four fixtures decided in the closing minutes, the opening round delivered an immediate reminder that tactical discipline, substitutions and individual execution could prove just as important as possession and attacking volume.
