Churchill Brothers Make History with 2-1 Victory Over Mumbai City FC in ISL Debut

Churchill Brothers SC beat Mumbai City FC 2-1 in their historic ISL opener as Gaurav Bora scored the club's first league goal before Sebastian Gutierrez sealed the win.
Churchill Brothers SC began their 2026–27 Indian Super League campaign with a historic 2-1 victory over Mumbai City FC at the Fatorda Stadium on Sunday, securing a memorable result in their first home match of the season.
Gaurav Bora scored the club’s first-ever ISL goal in the 57th minute before Sebastian Gutierrez doubled the advantage in the 86th. Sergio Llamas converted a stoppage-time penalty for Mumbai City, but Churchill held on to claim all three points.
The result marked an important moment for the Goan club as it began a new chapter in the country’s top-tier football competition. Against an experienced Mumbai City side, Churchill demonstrated defensive resilience, took advantage of key attacking opportunities and delivered when it mattered most in the second half.
For the Islanders, the defeat was a frustrating start, particularly after they controlled possession during the opening period but struggled to convert that dominance into goals.
Mumbai City FC took the initiative early, looking to establish control through possession and build their attacks from the back. Their first significant opportunity arrived in the ninth minute when Wilmar Jordan delivered a cross for Brandon Fernandes, whose right-footed attempt was saved by Churchill goalkeeper Sayad Kadir.
Churchill responded almost immediately. After clearing a Brandon corner in the 10th minute, the hosts broke forward through Vincy Barretto, who carried the ball into an attacking position before shooting just over the crossbar. The exchanges highlighted the contrasting approaches of the two teams. Mumbai City sought to control the tempo, while Churchill looked to exploit opportunities on the counterattack and make their forward movements count.
Mumbai City continued to probe for openings. In the 17th minute, a foul on Jordan gave the visitors a free-kick opportunity. Brandon delivered the ball into a dangerous area, but the deflected delivery was collected by Akash Mishra.
Churchill also made an early adjustment, with Deny Singh replacing Provat Lakra in the 32nd minute. The hosts continued to search for opportunities, and Wayde Lekay tested the goalkeeper with a long-range effort in the 37th minute.
Neither side could find the breakthrough before half-time, with the score remaining 0-0 despite promising moments at both ends.
Bora Opens Churchill Brothers' ISL Account
Churchill made an important change at the interval, introducing Gaurav Bora for Alexander Yeoule. The substitution also gave the hosts an all-Indian backline for the second half. The match resumed with greater intensity as Churchill searched for openings and Mumbai City attempted to exploit spaces on the counterattack. The hosts made another change in the 55th minute, bringing on Trijoy Dias for captain Kingslee Fernandes.
Two minutes later, Churchill found the breakthrough.
Following a short corner, Anil Gaonkar delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Bora rose to head the ball into the net in the 57th minute. The goal was a landmark moment for the club, marking Churchill Brothers' first goal in the Indian Super League.
Bora's finish gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage and rewarded their persistence after a closely contested first half. The goal also changed the complexion of the match, forcing Mumbai City to pursue an equaliser rather than rely solely on their possession-based approach.
Churchill nearly extended their lead soon afterwards when Lekay produced a curling effort from distance that struck the crossbar. The opportunity underlined the growing confidence of the home side, who were now finding ways to threaten the Mumbai City goal.
Mumbai City responded with a triple substitution in the 62nd minute. Farukh replaced Bijay Chhetri, Cirkovic came on for Otormin, and Zothanpuia replaced Bawitlung as the visitors attempted to change the rhythm of the contest.
However, the changes did not immediately produce the desired breakthrough. Mumbai City created relatively few clear opportunities after the restart, while Churchill continued to protect their advantage and looked for chances to finish the match. Hridaya Jain replaced Valpuia in the 77th minute as the visitors continued to adjust their personnel. Muhammed Ajsal then came on for Jordan in the 85th minute.
By this stage, Churchill had managed to frustrate Mumbai City's attacking efforts while remaining dangerous going forward. The hosts' defensive discipline was becoming increasingly important as the visitors searched for a late response.
Churchill Brothers delivered the decisive blow in the 86th minute. Stendley Fernandes, who had entered the match a minute earlier for Trijoy Dias, made an immediate impact by setting up Sebastian Gutierrez inside the penalty area.
Gutierrez finished the opportunity to make it 2-0, putting Churchill within touching distance of a memorable opening victory. The timing of the goal was crucial, as it gave the hosts a two-goal cushion with only a few minutes remaining.
Mumbai City did manage to pull one goal back deep into stoppage time. Angu fouled Akash Mishra inside the penalty area, prompting the referee to award a spot-kick. Llamas converted from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
However, the late goal proved to be only a consolation as Churchill preserved their lead and secured the victory.
Churchill Brothers Begin a New Era in Style
The 2-1 result gives Churchill Brothers an encouraging start to their ISL campaign and provides an important moment for the club and its supporters. Bora's historic opening goal and Gutierrez's late finish were the decisive contributions, while the team's defensive resilience helped it withstand Mumbai City's early pressure.
The performance also highlighted the value of timely substitutions, with Stendley Fernandes providing the assist for the second goal shortly after coming on.
For Mumbai City FC, the defeat will raise questions about their attacking efficiency and their inability to make sustained possession count after the break. Despite taking the initiative early, they were unable to find a goal until Llamas converted the late penalty.
The Churchill Brothers, meanwhile, can take confidence from a result that combines historical significance with three valuable points. Their challenge now will be to build on this performance and maintain the organisation and attacking effectiveness that carried them to victory at Fatorda.
