The Indian women's football team endured a difficult evening at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan on Sunday, suffering a comprehensive 0-8 defeat against Russia in the second international friendly between the two sides.

The result completed a disappointing two-match series for the Blue Tigresses, who had lost the opening encounter 0-4 on Thursday. Russia scored 12 unanswered goals across the two matches, exposing significant gaps in India's defensive organisation, ball retention and ability to cope with high-intensity attacking football.

Darina Ishmukhametova, Marine Achoian and Natalia Mashina scored twice each for the visitors, while Daiana Kishmakhova and Elizaveta Semenova contributed one goal apiece.

India head coach Crispin Chettri made five changes to the starting eleven following Thursday's defeat, introducing Shubhangi Singh, Mousumi Murmu, Renu, Dhurga Perumal and Priyadharshini Selladurai. Ranjana Chanu Sorokhaibam assumed the captaincy.

However, the changes did little to disrupt Russia's attacking rhythm. Unlike the opening friendly, when India had remained competitive for much of the first half, the visitors established control early through sharp passing combinations, intelligent movement and frequent switches of play.

Russia broke the deadlock in the 21st minute when Ksenia Dolgova advanced down the left flank and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. Indian goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem failed to gather the ball cleanly, allowing Ishmukhametova to convert the rebound.

Four minutes later, Achoian produced arguably the finest goal of the evening. Collecting possession approximately 30 yards from goal, the Russian midfielder dribbled past multiple Indian defenders before unleashing a powerful right-footed strike into the top-right corner. India's defensive difficulties continued in the 29th minute.

A flowing move involving Azalia Zalmieva and Achoian opened the Indian backline, with Achoian threading a precise pass through for Kishmakhova. The forward timed her run effectively and finished at the near post to make it 3-0. Russia added a fourth in the 42nd minute after Juli Kishan brought down Kira Petukhova inside the penalty area. Ishmukhametova converted the resulting penalty, sending Monalisha the wrong way.

Another misplaced Indian pass led to Russia's fifth goal before the interval. Ishmukhametova intercepted possession and supplied Achoian, who evaded Dhurga Perumal's challenge before completing her brace. Monalisha made further saves from Achoian and Petukhova to prevent an even greater first-half deficit.

Chettri introduced goalkeeper Nandini at the beginning of the second half, handing her an international debut, while also making changes elsewhere.

However, India's problems in possession persisted. In the 50th minute, Natalia Mashina intercepted a misplaced pass from Cindy Colney and advanced unchallenged towards goal. The Russian forward calmly beat Nandini in a one-on-one situation to extend the advantage to 6-0.

Just one minute later, another ineffective clearance presented Mashina with possession inside the Indian penalty area. With the defence unable to close her down, Mashina finished through Nandini's legs to register her second goal in quick succession. Russia continued to dominate possession and territory, leaving India with limited opportunities to establish any meaningful attacking rhythm.

The eighth and final goal arrived in the 74th minute. A long throw into the penalty area eventually reached Mashina, who worked the ball towards Elizaveta Semenova. The midfielder controlled possession near the edge of the box, created space and struck a powerful right-footed effort into the bottom-left corner.

Two Matches Highlight India's Development Challenges

The defeats underline the considerable challenge facing India's women's national team as it attempts to bridge the competitive gap against stronger international opposition. Across the two encounters, Russia demonstrated superior technical execution, quicker transitions and more effective movement without the ball.

India, meanwhile, repeatedly surrendered possession in dangerous areas and struggled to maintain defensive compactness when Russia attacked through central channels or exploited space behind the backline. Before Sunday's match, defender Juli Kishan had identified finishing as an important area for improvement following the opening friendly, when India created opportunities through Malavika, Lynda Kom Serto, Sanfida Nongrum and Juli herself.

However, the second encounter exposed problems extending well beyond attacking efficiency. Chettri had already acknowledged the team's shortcomings after Thursday's defeat, accepting responsibility for the performance while identifying Russia's standard as one India must aspire to reach. The friendlies also provided opportunities for younger players to gain senior international experience, an important component of India's longer-term development programme.

Following their recent SAFF Women's Championship campaign, the Blue Tigresses are attempting to integrate emerging players while improving their competitiveness against technically stronger opponents. Nevertheless, conceding 12 goals without scoring across two home matches represents a substantial setback.

For Chettri and his coaching staff, the immediate priorities will include improving defensive coordination, reducing unforced errors in possession and developing greater composure when confronted by aggressive pressing. The Kolkata series has offered India a demanding assessment of their current international standing. Turning those lessons into measurable improvement will be essential as the Blue Tigresses prepare for their future assignments.

Result: India 0-8 Russia

Goalscorers: Darina Ishmukhametova (2), Marine Achoian (2), Natalia Mashina (2), Daiana Kishmakhova (1), Elizaveta Semenova (1).

Series result: Russia won both friendlies, 4-0 and 8-0.
