Odisha FC coach T.G. Purushothaman demands resilience ahead of the ISL 2026-27 opener against Punjab FC, as captain Puitea embraces leadership responsibilities.

Odisha FC head coach T.G. Purushothaman has called for resilience, adaptability and an uncompromising approach as his side prepares to open its MG Indian Super League (ISL) 2026-27 campaign against Punjab FC.

With limited pre-season match practice and several new signings to integrate, the coach has made it clear that the team must respond to its circumstances through hard work and collective responsibility. Speaking alongside captain Lalthathanga Khawlhring, popularly known as Puitea, at the pre-match press conference in Bhubaneswar on October 13, Purushothaman stressed that Odisha FC must improve on last season’s performance by becoming more consistent and converting promising displays into results.

The Juggernauts begin their campaign with an away fixture against Punjab FC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, where their ability to adapt quickly and establish cohesion will be tested from the outset.

Odisha FC’s preparations have been complicated by a lack of pre-season matches, leaving the coaching staff with less competitive preparation than they would have preferred. Rather than dwell on that limitation, Purushothaman insisted that the squad must focus on what it can control.

“As professionals, we have to adapt to the situation. We need to turn the negatives into positives and focus on performing well,” the coach said. His message reflects the immediate challenge facing Odisha FC. Pre-season matches provide opportunities to assess combinations, establish tactical patterns and build match sharpness before the league begins. Without sufficient competitive preparation, players may need to develop their understanding under the pressure of actual league fixtures.

For Purushothaman, however, the circumstances cannot become an excuse. The emphasis is on professionalism, adaptability and ensuring that the team approaches its opening match with the right mentality.

Odisha FC will also need to integrate new signings into an existing squad. Establishing communication between new arrivals and established players will be important as the team looks to find consistency across the campaign.

Fighting Until the Final Whistle: Odisha FC’s Identity

Purushothaman also underlined the identity he wants Odisha FC to demonstrate on the pitch, placing commitment and competition for places at the centre of his message.

“Our identity is clear fight for everything and give your best until the referee blows the final whistle,” he said.

The statement sets a demanding standard for the season. Odisha FC will need to show that determination not only in difficult away fixtures but also in matches where results depend on maintaining concentration during the closing stages.

Consistency was identified as a priority heading into the new campaign. For a team seeking to improve on its previous season, the ability to remain competitive throughout matches and avoid costly lapses can be as important as individual quality.

Competition for places is another component of the coach’s approach. With new signings joining the squad, players will need to demonstrate their value through performances and training standards. That internal competition could help raise the overall level of the team, provided the squad develops a shared understanding of its responsibilities.

The opening match against Punjab FC will offer the first indication of how effectively Odisha FC can translate those principles into competitive action.

Captain Puitea expressed confidence in the atmosphere within the squad, highlighting the positive connection between new signings and existing players. With Odisha FC looking to build chemistry ahead of a demanding season, the midfielder emphasised the importance of unity and personal responsibility. The captaincy, he said, was an opportunity to serve the team rather than an additional burden.

“I don't see it as pressure; I take it as an honour. It won't be easy, but I will take as much responsibility as I can and always be there for the team, the staff and the club,” Puitea said. His appointment follows the departures of Carlos Delgado and Amrinder Singh, leaving him with the task of helping guide the group through a period of transition.

Leadership will be particularly important during the early weeks of the campaign, when new combinations are still developing and results can influence confidence. Puitea’s stated willingness to take responsibility signals his intention to support teammates and maintain a positive environment within the dressing room.

The captain will also need to help ensure that the coach’s demand for commitment translates into collective action on the pitch.

Rahul KP to Miss Season Opener

Purushothaman confirmed that Rahul KP will miss the match against Punjab FC because of a minor injury. The club has opted not to risk the player at this early stage of the season. While his absence removes an option from Odisha FC’s selection plans, the decision reflects a cautious approach to player fitness. With a long campaign ahead, avoiding unnecessary risks over minor injuries can be important in maintaining squad availability.

The extent to which Rahul’s absence affects the starting line-up was not specified, leaving the final selection and tactical adjustments to the coaching staff.

Odisha FC’s opening fixture presents an immediate test of the principles outlined by Purushothaman and Puitea. The visitors must adapt to limited pre-season preparation, integrate new players and demonstrate the consistency that the coach has identified as a priority. Punjab FC, playing at home, will look to make the most of its own surroundings. Odisha FC will therefore need to combine defensive organisation with composure in possession while remaining competitive throughout the match.

The result will be important, but the performance will also offer an early assessment of how quickly the squad is adapting to the new season.

Purushothaman’s message is straightforward: circumstances cannot dictate the team’s attitude. With Puitea embracing his leadership responsibilities and the squad working towards greater cohesion, Odisha FC will aim to begin the campaign with a display built on commitment, discipline and collective effort.

For the Juggernauts, the first step towards a more consistent season begins against Punjab FC. The expectation from their coach is clear: adapt, compete and fight until the final whistle.
