French Open 2026 Final Preview: PV Sindhu Faces World No. 1 An Se-young in Battle for the Title

PV Sindhu faces world No. 1 An Se-young in the French Open 2026 final on October 25. Preview their head-to-head record, form, tactics and title stakes
India’s two-time Olympic medallist targets her second Super 750 title of the season against a South Korean champion riding a 49-match winning streak, with history and a daunting head-to-head record adding to the challenge.
PV Sindhu stands one victory away from another significant milestone in her career as she prepares to face South Korea’s An Se-young in the women’s singles final of the French Open 2026 in Paris on Sunday.
The Indian, currently ranked world No. 11, secured her place in the title clash with a hard-fought three-game semifinal victory over Japan’s Hina Akechi. However, the challenge awaiting her is considerably tougher: An is the world No. 1, the defending French Open champion and one of the most dominant players on the international circuit this season.
The final, scheduled for Sunday, October 25, at the Arena Grand Paris in Tremblay-en-France, presents Sindhu with an opportunity to win her second Super 750 title of 2026 and end a difficult run of results against the South Korean star.
Sindhu’s run to the final represents another positive development in a season that has seen the Indian rediscover her title-winning form. Her victory at the Japan Open Super 750 in July delivered her first BWF World Tour title since December 2024 and her maiden championship at the Super 750 level.
A victory in Paris would give the former world champion two Super 750 titles in the same calendar year for the first time since 2022. It would also make her the first Indian woman to win the French Open women’s singles title since Aparna Popat in 1998.
Sindhu has had to work hard to reach this stage. She survived a major scare in the opening round against Thailand’s Supanida Katethong, recovering from a late collapse in the deciding game to win 21-14, 8-21, 23-21. She subsequently defeated Japan’s Riko Gunji 21-12, 21-16 and Chinese Taipei’s Chiu Pin-chian 21-13, 21-14 in straight games.
The semifinal against Akechi proved another demanding examination. Sindhu won the opening game 21-10 but lost the second 20-22 after surrendering an advantage. She responded in the decider, winning 21-16 after a 73-minute contest to book her place in the final.
The match demonstrated both her resilience and the importance of maintaining concentration during crucial phases. Against An, such lapses could prove considerably more costly.
An Se-young arrives in formidable form
An enters the final after an extraordinary 2026 campaign. According to the supplied tournament analysis, the 24-year-old has compiled a 65-1 match record, is riding a 49-match winning streak and is seeking her tenth tournament title of the year.
The reigning Olympic champion has also won the world championship and the Asian Games individual gold medal in 2026, adding to her world title from 2023 and Olympic triumph at Paris 2024. Her progress through the French Open draw has been exceptionally efficient. An defeated Denmark’s Amalie Schulz 21-6, 21-4 in the opening round before overcoming India’s Tanvi Sharma 21-11, 21-14.
She then beat China’s world No. 5 Han Yue 21-13, 21-16 in the quarterfinals and former world champion Nozomi Okuhara 21-12, 21-19 in the semifinals. Unlike Sindhu, An has not dropped a game during the tournament. She has also spent substantially less time on court, giving her a potential physical advantage ahead of the final.
An is chasing a third consecutive French Open singles title. Achieving that would place her among the tournament’s most successful players and underline her sustained dominance in women’s badminton.
The most significant obstacle for Sindhu is their previous record against each other. An leads the head-to-head 10-0, having won 20 of the 21 games contested across their recorded meetings. Sindhu’s only game victory against An came in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Badminton Asia Championships. The Indian won the opening game 21-18, but An responded emphatically, taking the next two 21-5, 21-9.
Their previous meetings in 2026 have also favoured the South Korean. An defeated Sindhu in the Singapore Open quarterfinals 21-17, 21-14 and won their Indonesia Open encounter 21-17, 21-15. These results underline An’s ability to neutralise Sindhu’s attacking strengths. The South Korean’s defensive consistency, court coverage and ability to redirect powerful smashes make it difficult for opponents to maintain pressure over extended rallies.
For Sindhu, the final requires more than simply producing powerful attacking shots. She must find ways to disrupt An’s rhythm and prevent the world No. 1 from controlling the pace of the match.
Tactical battle: Sindhu’s attack against An’s defence
Sindhu’s height, reach and attacking power remain key weapons. Her steep smashes and ability to create sharp angles can trouble opponents when she has sufficient time to position herself behind the shuttle.
The Indian will need to create those opportunities through controlled rally construction rather than rely exclusively on outright power. Tight net shots, deceptive drops and well-directed clears could force An to lift the shuttle, allowing Sindhu to attack from favourable positions.
Target selection will be equally important. Repeatedly hitting directly into An’s defensive positions could allow the South Korean to redirect the shuttle and turn defence into attack. An, meanwhile, will look to extend rallies, recover quickly after each shot and exploit any decline in Sindhu’s accuracy. Her ability to absorb pressure without conceding easy points has been central to her success.
Sindhu must therefore balance aggression with patience. She needs to take attacking opportunities when they arise while avoiding unnecessary errors during longer exchanges.
An Se-young begins as the clear favourite, given her outstanding season, physical freshness and unblemished head-to-head record against Sindhu. The Indian, however, has demonstrated throughout the tournament that she can navigate difficult moments and recover from setbacks.
The key will be to start strongly, maintain concentration through the closing stages of each game and make the most of her attacking opportunities. If Sindhu can force An into uncomfortable positions and keep the match competitive, she will give herself a chance to challenge the defending champion.
