Gerard Piqué Enters Chess as Strategic Shareholder in FYERS American Gambits

Football and chess are moving closer together, with former Spain and Barcelona star Gerard Piqué entering the world of professional chess as a strategic shareholder in FYERS American Gambits, one of the franchises competing in the Global Chess League.
The announcement, made on August 18, comes ahead of the third season of the Global Chess League, which will be held in Bengaluru from September 3 to 13. Piqué's investment adds another major name from global sport to a competition that is increasingly positioning chess as more than a traditional board game — and instead as a scalable sports, entertainment and technology property.
A FIFA World Cup winner with Spain and one of the most decorated footballers of his generation, Piqué brings experience of competing at the highest level of elite sport as well as a background in building ventures that connect sport with wider audiences.
For FYERS American Gambits, his arrival is being positioned as a long-term strategic move rather than simply a celebrity association.
Piqué's career in football exposed him to some of the world's biggest sporting audiences and most valuable sporting properties. His involvement with FYERS American Gambits reflects the growing interest in chess among personalities and investors from outside the traditional chess ecosystem.
The franchise believes that chess has the ingredients to develop a global audience comparable with other major sports, particularly as digital platforms and new competition formats make the game more accessible to younger fans. Prachura PP, CEO and co-owner of FYERS American Gambits, described Piqué's investment as a landmark moment for the franchise.
“Gerard Piqué’s investment in FYERS American Gambits is a landmark moment for our franchise, and we believe, for the evolution of chess as a global sport,” Prachura said. According to the franchise, Piqué's understanding of elite competition, fan communities and sports ventures aligns with its ambition to build a globally recognised chess property.
Chess enters a new commercial phase
Chess has undergone significant changes in recent years, driven by the growth of online platforms, streaming, social media and a new generation of internationally recognised players. The Global Chess League has added another layer to that evolution by introducing a franchise-based team format to a traditionally individual sport.
Instead of players competing only as individuals, the league creates team identities, franchise rivalries and a more conventional sports-entertainment structure. That model has attracted players from different generations and countries while giving franchises an opportunity to develop their own brands. FYERS American Gambits is looking to position itself at the centre of that transformation.
The franchise is backed by a group of strategic shareholders that includes former India international cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, further strengthening its links with mainstream sport.
Yashas Khoday, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer of FYERS, believes chess can follow a path similar to football in building a truly global fan base.
“Football became a global game because it found ways to connect with fans everywhere,” Khoday said. “We believe chess has that same potential.”
Piqué's arrival comes just weeks before FYERS American Gambits begin their third Global Chess League season. The franchise has assembled an international roster featuring some of the leading names in the sport. The lineup includes Javokhir Sindarov, Nihal Sarin, Daniil Dubov, Bibisara Assaubayeva, Sara Khadem and Marc'Andria Maurizzi, with Grandmaster Srinath Narayanan leading the team.
The combination reflects the global nature of modern chess, with players from different countries and generations coming together under a single franchise identity.
For the franchise, the objective is not simply to compete for results but to build a long-term sporting brand. The Bengaluru season therefore represents an important opportunity to translate its investment in players, leadership and commercial partnerships into visibility among Indian and international audiences.
Piqué sees potential beyond the chessboard
For Piqué, the attraction appears to be rooted in the broader possibilities of chess. The former footballer said he has long been fascinated by the sport because of its depth, global appeal and the mental strength it demands. “What attracted me to FYERS American Gambits is the ambition to take chess to a new level and its long-term vision for the sport,” Piqué said.
His comments underline the changing perception of chess within the wider sports industry. The game is increasingly being presented not only as a test of strategic thinking but also as entertainment capable of supporting franchises, personalities, digital communities and global commercial partnerships.
That is precisely the space in which the Global Chess League is attempting to operate.
Piqué's involvement could also help chess reach audiences that traditionally follow other sports. Football has one of the world's largest global fan bases, while Piqué has spent much of his career at the intersection of elite competition, entertainment and entrepreneurship. His entry into chess creates a natural bridge between two very different sporting cultures.
For FYERS American Gambits, the opportunity is to use that connection while retaining the competitive credibility provided by its world-class roster. The franchise's challenge will be turning the attention generated by Piqué's arrival into sustained interest in its players and the Global Chess League itself.
That will ultimately depend on performance, storytelling and the ability to create a strong identity around the team. For now, however, the appointment represents another indication of chess's expanding commercial footprint. With Piqué joining the ownership group, Ashwin among its strategic shareholders and an international roster preparing for the Global Chess League in Bengaluru, FYERS American Gambits is attempting to build a franchise that sits at the intersection of chess, technology, sport and entertainment.
And with one of football's biggest names now backing the project, that ambition has received a significant global boost.
