Gurpreet Singh Sandhu Becomes India’s Second-Most Capped Footballer, Surpasses Bhaichung Bhutia

Indian football witnessed a significant moment on May 27, 2026, when captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu became the second-most capped player in the history of the men's national team.
By starting India's Unity Cup semi-final against Jamaica at The Valley in London, the veteran goalkeeper earned his 85th international appearance, moving past Indian football legend Bhaichung Bhutia's tally of 84 caps.
Only Sunil Chhetri, with a remarkable 157 appearances, now stands ahead of Sandhu on the all-time list. For a goalkeeper to reach such heights in a country where attacking stars have traditionally dominated the spotlight is a remarkable achievement and a reflection of Sandhu's consistency, professionalism, and longevity. While India suffered a 0-2 defeat against Jamaica in the Unity Cup, the evening will be remembered as another milestone in the career of one of the finest goalkeepers Indian football has ever produced.
For decades, India's appearance records were dominated by attacking icons. Bhaichung Bhutia and Sunil Chhetri became household names through their goals and leadership, while defenders and goalkeepers rarely received similar recognition.
Sandhu's rise to second place on the all-time appearance chart represents a changing era in Indian football. Modern training methods, better sports science, increased international fixtures, and the stability brought by the Indian Super League have allowed players to enjoy longer careers than previous generations.
The current top five appearance makers for India now feature:
Sunil Chhetri – 157 caps
Gurpreet Singh Sandhu – 85 caps
Bhaichung Bhutia – 84 caps
Sandesh Jhingan – 73 caps
Shabbir Ali – 72 caps
Among active players, only Sandhu and Jhingan are currently adding to their totals, with the Bengaluru FC goalkeeper firmly established as India's undisputed No. 1.
Born in Mohali, Punjab, Sandhu's football journey began at St. Stephen's Football Academy. Interestingly, he was initially moved into goal because his coaches felt he was not particularly comfortable playing outfield. That decision would ultimately shape the future of Indian football. After progressing through youth football, Sandhu joined East Bengal's academy before breaking into professional football. His performances quickly established him as one of India's brightest goalkeeping prospects.
The defining moment of his career arrived in 2014 when he signed for Norwegian club Stabæk Football. The move transformed him into a pioneer for Indian footballers abroad.
During his time in Norway, Sandhu became the first Indian footballer to play a competitive match for a top-division European club, the first Indian to start a top-flight European league match, and remains the only Indian footballer to have appeared in the UEFA Europa League.
Those achievements elevated his status and helped raise expectations for future generations of Indian footballers seeking opportunities overseas.
While caps alone tell one story, Sandhu's influence on the national team extends far beyond appearances. The 34-year-old has become the cornerstone of India's defensive setup across multiple coaching regimes. From Stephen Constantine to Igor Štimac, Manolo Márquez, and now Khalid Jamil, every coach has placed faith in Sandhu's leadership and shot-stopping abilities.
His statistics further underline his importance. Sandhu has recorded 29 international clean sheets, making him the only Indian goalkeeper to surpass the 20-clean-sheet mark. His clean-sheet ratio of over 34 percent is significantly higher than many of his predecessors, reflecting both his individual quality and India's increasingly organised defensive structure.
Perhaps his most memorable performance came in Doha during India's 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, when he produced a series of stunning saves to help secure a famous 0-0 draw against Asian champions Qatar. That performance remains one of the finest goalkeeping displays in Indian football history.
Following Sunil Chhetri's international retirement in June 2024, Sandhu naturally stepped into a greater leadership role. Having served as vice-captain for several years, he was entrusted with guiding a national team entering a period of transition. While the goals once came from Chhetri, the responsibility of maintaining standards now rests heavily on Sandhu's shoulders.
His experience has become particularly valuable as younger players continue to integrate into the national setup. Whether through his communication, organisation, or composure under pressure, Sandhu has emerged as one of the most influential figures in Indian football.
Despite reaching 85 caps, Sandhu remains some distance behind Chhetri's extraordinary total of 157 appearances. However, goalkeepers traditionally enjoy longer careers than outfield players. With Sandhu still performing at a high level for Bengaluru FC and maintaining his position as India's first-choice goalkeeper, further milestones appear inevitable. His current club contract runs until 2028, and there are few signs of decline.
Whether or not he ultimately challenges Chhetri's seemingly untouchable record, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu has already secured his place among the giants of Indian football.
From a young boy in Mohali to a trailblazer in Europe and now India's second-most capped footballer, his journey represents one of the most remarkable success stories in the history of the sport in the country.
