Hockey India Names 24-Member Indian Junior Women’s Team for UK Tour Ahead of Junior Asia Cup

Hockey India has unveiled a 24-member Indian Junior Women’s Team for its upcoming exposure tour of the United Kingdom, scheduled from July 5 to July 14, 2026.
The nine-day tour will serve as an important stepping stone in the squad’s preparations for major international assignments, including the Junior Asia Cup, while also marking an early opportunity for newly appointed head coach Tim White to assess his team in competitive conditions.
The young Indian side will play seven matches against a mix of senior and junior international opposition, including teams from Scotland, the United States, England and Belgium, giving the players valuable overseas experience against quality rivals.
Midfielder Khaidem Shileima Chanu has been entrusted with the captaincy of the touring squad, reflecting Hockey India’s confidence in her leadership abilities and experience at the junior level. The goalkeeping responsibilities will be shared by Nidhi and Engil Harsha Rani Minz, both of whom will look to impress during the demanding tour.
In defence, India has selected Pooja Sahoo, Supriya, Madhu, F. Lalbi Aksiami, Lalneihpuii and Parwati Topno, providing a balanced unit capable of adapting to different styles of opposition.
The midfield group features captain Chanu alongside Tanuja Toppo, Supriya Kujur, Pooja Malik, Binima Dhan, Geeta Yadav, Roshni Aind and Tanushree Dinesh Kadu, offering a blend of energy, technical ability and tactical flexibility. Leading the attack will be Sukhveer Kaur, Shashi Khasa, Lalrinpuii, Nisha Minj, Purnima Yadav, Kajal, Sanika Chandrakant Mane and Krishna Sharma, all eager to make an impact against international opponents.
India’s tour begins with two matches against the Scotland Senior Women’s Team at the University of Edinburgh, providing the junior squad with the opportunity to test itself against experienced senior-level opposition.
The team will then travel to the Lilleshall National Sports Centre in England, where it will take on the junior teams of the United States, England and Belgium in the remaining fixtures. Facing teams from different hockey cultures and tactical systems is expected to help the Indian players broaden their understanding of the game while adapting to varied playing conditions and styles.
For many members of the squad, this will be their first experience competing against overseas opposition, making the tour an invaluable learning opportunity.
The UK tour will also be closely watched as it marks one of the first major assignments for head coach Tim White, who has recently taken charge of the Indian Junior Women’s programme. Speaking about the significance of the tour, White emphasised that the focus extends beyond results and centres on player development and team cohesion.
“The tour to the UK is an important part of the development process for our junior squad. We have selected an exciting young group, many of whom have not had exposure to foreign teams, so it will be a great learning opportunity for individuals and for the group as a team,” White said.
The coach also highlighted that competing against strong international opposition would allow India to test the systems and style of play developed during the past several weeks of training.
One of the primary objectives of the UK tour is to prepare the squad for the upcoming Junior Asia Cup, a tournament that carries significant importance for India’s long-term player development pathway. Exposure tours provide far more than match practice. They enable coaches to evaluate combinations under pressure, identify tactical strengths and weaknesses, and expose players to high-intensity international competition before major championships.
For Tim White and his support staff, the seven-match schedule offers a valuable opportunity to assess different player combinations and refine strategies ahead of future tournaments.
The selected squad includes several players who have steadily progressed through India’s age-group system and now have the chance to establish themselves on the international stage. The experience of travelling abroad, adapting to unfamiliar conditions and facing physically demanding opponents is expected to accelerate their development. Beyond technical improvements, such tours often play a vital role in building confidence, communication and resilience—qualities essential for athletes aspiring to transition into the senior national setup.
With the Junior Asia Cup and future international competitions on the horizon, performances during this tour could significantly influence selection decisions and define the trajectory of several promising careers.
India’s women’s hockey programme has enjoyed sustained success in recent years, and maintaining that progress depends heavily on developing the next generation of talent. The decision to organise an extensive overseas exposure tour reflects Hockey India’s commitment to investing in youth development and ensuring that young players gain meaningful international experience early in their careers.
By competing against established hockey nations such as Scotland, England and Belgium, the junior squad will gain insights that cannot be replicated through domestic competition alone.
As the team prepares to depart for the United Kingdom, expectations will naturally focus on learning and growth rather than results alone. Under Tim White’s guidance and the leadership of Khaidem Shileima Chanu, the tour presents an ideal platform for India’s emerging stars to sharpen their skills, build confidence and lay the foundations for future success on the international stage.
