IFL 2025-26: Shillong Lajong Run Riot with Six-Star Performance to Thrash Aizawl FC

Shillong Lajong FC produced one of the most dominant performances of the Star Cement Indian Football League 2025–26 season, dismantling Aizawl FC 6-1 in Match 42 at the SSA Stadium in Shillong on Saturday.

In a game that saw momentum swing briefly before being completely seized by the hosts, Lajong’s clinical finishing and relentless pressure proved too much for an error-prone Aizawl side. The result sees Shillong Lajong climb to second place in the standings with 17 points from nine matches, strengthening their push in the top half. For Aizawl FC, however, the defeat confirms their entry into the relegation phase, as they drop to seventh, unable to recover from a string of inconsistent performances. Interestingly, the early phases of the match told a very different story. Aizawl FC started brightly, dominating possession in the opening 15 minutes with quick, incisive passing. Their movement off the ball stretched the Lajong defence, creating multiple half-chances. However, their inability to convert these opportunities proved costly. Goalkeeper Ranit Sarkar was called into action early, producing crucial saves, while the Lajong defenders showed commitment with timely blocks to keep the scoreline intact.

Having weathered the early storm, Shillong Lajong gradually found their rhythm and began asserting control in midfield. Their breakthrough arrived in the 26th minute, stemming from a well-executed move down the left flank. Saveme Tariang delivered a curling cross towards the back post, and a moment of hesitation from Aizawl goalkeeper Lalhruaitluanga proved decisive. Phrangki Buam timed his run to perfection and slotted the ball into the net, giving the hosts a crucial lead.

Aizawl responded with urgency, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. They earned a series of corner kicks and came close through Luis Rodríguez, who should have done better with a free header from close range but sent his effort over the bar. It was a moment that summed up Aizawl’s struggles in front of goal. Shillong Lajong capitalised on another defensive lapse just before half-time to double their advantage. A long ball from defence caught Lalhruaitluanga off guard as he rushed out of his box. The bounce deceived him completely, allowing Everbrightson Sana to collect the loose ball and calmly roll it into an empty net. At 2-0, Lajong had not only taken control of the scoreboard but also the psychological edge heading into the break.

The second half began with Lajong on the front foot, earning multiple corners and maintaining pressure. However, against the run of play, Aizawl found a way back into the game in the 50th minute. A defensive lapse from Gladdy Kharbuli allowed Vanlalhriatzuala to deliver a dangerous cross into the box, and Lalhriatpuia made a smart run to head the ball into the net, reducing the deficit to 2-1. At that stage, there was a brief sense that Aizawl could mount a comeback. But Shillong Lajong responded emphatically, showcasing their attacking depth and composure under pressure. Just after the hour mark, Lajong were awarded a penalty when Laldanmawia brought down Phrangki Buam during a swift counter-attack. Lamlallian Vaiphei stepped up and converted confidently, restoring the two-goal cushion.

What followed was a complete collapse from Aizawl FC. Within minutes, Lajong struck again to make it 4-1, capitalising on yet another defensive error. Saveme Tariang intercepted a loose clearance high up the pitch and set up the attack, with Gladdy Kharbuli applying the finishing touch to guide the ball past the goalkeeper. With the game effectively sealed, Shillong Lajong continued to press, exposing Aizawl’s defensive vulnerabilities. The fifth goal arrived in the 87th minute, once again stemming from poor decision-making by the goalkeeper. Lalhruaitluanga ventured out of his area but was quickly closed down by substitute Jakob Vanlalhimpuia, who won possession and set up Tremiki Lamurong for a simple finish into an empty net.

There was still time for more. Deep into stoppage time, Jakob and Tremiki combined once again, with the latter unleashing a powerful strike from the edge of the box to complete his brace and cap off a remarkable performance. For Shillong Lajong, this was a statement victory one built on resilience, tactical discipline, and ruthless finishing. Despite a slow start, they adapted quickly, exploited opposition errors, and maintained intensity throughout the 90 minutes. For Aizawl FC, the defeat raises serious concerns. While their attacking build-up showed promise early on, defensive lapses and goalkeeping errors proved decisive. The inability to convert chances, combined with repeated mistakes at the back, ultimately led to a heavy scoreline.

As the league progresses, Shillong Lajong will take immense confidence from this performance, while Aizawl must regroup quickly if they are to salvage their campaign in the relegation phase.
