India squad announced for Panama, Brazil and Uruguay friendlies as Khalid Jamil prepares for major international test

India head coach Khalid Jamil has named a 26-player squad for a challenging September-October FIFA International Match Window, with the Blue Tigers set to face three higher-ranked opponents in the space of 10 days.

India will take on Panama in Bengaluru on September 26 before travelling to Kolkata for back-to-back fixtures against five-time world champions Brazil on October 3 and two-time world champions Uruguay on October 6. All three opponents featured at the FIFA World Cup earlier this year, giving Jamil and his players an opportunity to measure themselves against teams with considerable experience at the highest level of international football.

The squad was announced on Monday, August 31, with Jamil retaining a blend of experienced internationals and younger players as India prepares for one of its most demanding stretches of fixtures.

The Blue Tigers will begin their preparatory camp in Bengaluru on September 14. The team will remain in the city ahead of the Panama fixture before travelling to Kolkata on September 28 for the two high-profile encounters against Brazil and Uruguay.

Jamil has selected four goalkeepers for the international window, with Albino Gomes, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Prabhsukhan Singh Gill and Som Kumar included in the squad.

Gurpreet brings significant international experience to the group, while the inclusion of Gill and Kumar provides competition and depth in the position. Albino Gomes completes the four-man goalkeeping unit.

The defensive group consists of Abhishek Singh Tekcham, Akash Mishra, Anwar Ali, Bijoy Varghese, Hmingthanmawia Ralte, Jay Gupta, Pramveer and Ricky Meetei Haobam. With three matches against high-level opposition, defensive organisation will be one of India's biggest priorities. Facing Panama, Brazil and Uruguay will require the Blue Tigers to remain disciplined without possession while also dealing with the intensity and technical quality of opponents accustomed to playing at the World Cup level.

Strong competition in midfield

The midfield selection includes several familiar names, with Anirudh Thapa, Ashique Kuruniyan, Farukh Choudhary, Lalengmawia Ralte, Macarton Nickson, Mohammed Sanan, Ricky Shabong and Sahal Abdul Samad named in the squad.

The group offers Jamil a mixture of experience, energy and different tactical profiles. Thapa and Sahal provide international experience, while the presence of younger players gives the head coach additional options as he looks to assess his squad against elite opposition.

The forward line features Edmund Lalrindika, Irfan Yadwad, Manvir Singh, Rahim Ali, Ryan Williams and Vikram Partap Singh.

Manvir and Rahim bring previous international experience, while the wider attacking group gives Jamil options to change his approach depending on the opposition.
