India Beat Japan 2-0 to Seal Semi-Final Berth in Men’s Hockey in Asian Games 2026

The Indian men’s hockey team secured its place in the Asian Games 2026 semi-finals with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over hosts Japan in Kakamigahara on Saturday. 

Goals from Abhishek and captain Harmanpreet Singh were enough to give the defending champions their fourth consecutive win in Pool A.

Played under persistent rain at the Kawasaki Juko Hockey Stadium, the contest was far more closely fought than the final score suggested. Japan defended resolutely, created several opportunities on the counter and repeatedly tested the Indian defence. India, however, remained composed and produced the decisive moments when they mattered.

The victory also carried personal significance for Indian defender Sanjay, who made his 100th senior international appearance. The match began at a high tempo, with both teams looking to establish an attacking rhythm despite the wet conditions. India nearly opened the scoring in the third minute when an aerial ball found Abhishek at the top of the circle. However, the move was stopped after the ball was deemed dangerous with the Indian forward in a one-on-one situation against Japan goalkeeper Takashi Yoshikawa.

India continued to apply pressure and earned their first penalty corner in the fifth minute. Harmanpreet's flick struck an Indian player, while another penalty corner followed soon after a Japanese foot inside the circle. Harmanpreet's subsequent attempt hit the rusher's foot, and Japan defended the re-awarded corner brilliantly.

Japan responded with dangerous counter-attacks. In the seventh minute, Seren Tanaka created a double chance, but Indian goalkeeper Suraj Karkera stood firm to deny the hosts. India continued to dominate possession and territory, with Manpreet Singh creating an opportunity for Dilpreet Singh in the ninth minute, although the resulting effort lacked sufficient power.

Japan briefly thought they had taken the lead in the 10th minute, but the goal was ruled out after an Indian foot was involved in the build-up.

India finally found the breakthrough in the 15th minute. Japan's defence gave Abhishek too much time at the top of the circle, and the Indian forward took full advantage. He pushed the ball past Yoshikawa to put India 1-0 ahead at the end of the opening quarter.

Japan responded strongly after the restart and earned a penalty corner in the 17th minute. Ryoma Ooka's powerful effort, however, was deflected away by an Indian stick. At the other end, India continued to search for a second goal. Jarmanpreet Singh, Rajinder Singh and Sukhjeet Singh combined effectively, although Rajinder's eventual pass travelled across the face of goal without finding an Indian attacker.

Japan then produced another important attacking moment, forcing an excellent save from Karkera. India earned another penalty corner in the 21st minute, but Jugraj Singh's grounded effort lacked the necessary power and was cleared by Japan. The hosts subsequently tightened their defensive structure, making it difficult for India to create clear openings. The defending champions went into half-time with their narrow 1-0 lead intact.

Harmanpreet Doubles India’s Advantage

Japan continued to sit deep during the third quarter and looked to threaten through quick counter-attacks. The hosts earned a penalty corner in the 36th minute after a well-constructed move into the Indian circle. Shota Yamada's initial effort went wide, but Japan successfully challenged the decision through a video referral for an Indian foot.

The resulting penalty corner presented another opportunity, but Karkera produced a crucial block to preserve India's advantage. India then delivered the decisive moment of the match.

In the 40th minute, India earned their sixth penalty corner. Harmanpreet stepped up and unleashed a powerful flick into the left corner of the Japanese goal, leaving Yoshikawa with no chance. The captain's strike extended India's lead to 2-0 and provided the breathing room the defending champions had been searching for.

Harmanpreet came close to adding another shortly afterwards. India earned another penalty corner in the 43rd minute, with the Japanese goalkeeper denying the captain. Harmanpreet spotted a possible foot and called for a referral, which resulted in another penalty corner, but his aerial flick went wide.

Japan refused to surrender and continued to push forward in the final quarter. India earned another penalty corner in the 46th minute, but Jugraj's powerful attempt was directed straight at the goalkeeper. The hosts continued to defend aggressively while India looked to manage the game. Three further penalty-corner opportunities arrived for India between the 54th and 55th minutes, but none resulted in a third goal.

Japan's final significant opportunity came in the 58th minute when Manabu Yamashita found space after a poor Indian stop at the top of the circle. His shot, however, travelled across the face of goal. India remained composed during the closing stages and saw out the contest without conceding.

The 2-0 victory over Japan gives India four consecutive wins in Pool A and confirms their place in the semi-finals of the Asian Games 2026. Abhishek provided the breakthrough, while Harmanpreet's penalty-corner strike gave India the cushion they needed in a match played in challenging rainy conditions. The defending champions still have one Pool A match remaining, against Bangladesh on September 28, but their place in the last four is already secured.

For India, the victory was another important step in their title defence. Against a determined home side and difficult weather conditions, the team combined attacking quality with defensive discipline to maintain its unbeaten run and move closer to another Asian Games hockey final.
