Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Stun World No. 3 Japan Pair to Reach Quarterfinals

India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand produced one of their biggest performances of the Asian Games 2026 badminton competition, defeating Japan’s world No. 3 pair Yuki Fukushima and Mayu Matsumoto in straight games to reach the women’s doubles quarterfinals.

The Indian duo prevailed 24-22, 21-18 in a tense second-round encounter in Japan, overcoming a strong challenge from the home pair and holding their nerve during two closely contested games.

The victory is particularly significant for Indian women’s doubles badminton, with Treesa and Gayatri now through to the last eight and keeping alive the possibility of a historic medal.

With the score level at 20-20, every rally became crucial. Two wayward returns from the Japanese pair helped Treesa and Gayatri draw level at 22-22 after Japan had again looked capable of closing out the game. The Indians then earned their first game-point opportunity.

They could not convert it, ensuring that the opening game remained alive. But another opportunity soon arrived. A Japanese slip, combined with a sharp body attack from the Indian pair, created the opening Treesa and Gayatri needed. This time they made no mistake.

The Indians closed out the first game 24-22, taking a 1-0 lead after a tense battle that could easily have gone the other way.

Japan Fight Back in Game Two

The second game began with Japan looking to recover. Treesa and Gayatri were soon trailing 7-10, putting themselves under pressure once again.

The Indian pair, however, continued to stay within touching distance. The contest remained closely fought as both teams attempted to impose their preferred style. The final score was 24-22, 21-18.

The result sent the Indian pair into the Asian Games quarterfinals and delivered a major upset against the world No. 3 pairing.

The victory is significant beyond simply reaching the last eight. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand are now on course to potentially become India’s first-ever medallists in women’s doubles at the Asian Games. That makes their quarterfinal particularly important.
