India defeated Pakistan 5-3 in a pulsating eight-goal contest to book their place in the next stage of the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026, producing a dominant attacking performance before surviving a late Pakistan fightback.

The victory saw India finish second in Group D behind England and set up a major next-round clash against the Netherlands.

Harmanpreet Singh, Abhishek and vice-captain Hardik Rai were among the key performers as India extended their recent dominance over Pakistan in a match that delivered everything expected from one of hockey's biggest rivalries. There were eight goals, penalty corners, individual brilliance, defensive interventions and several moments when the result appeared capable of swinging either way.

Pakistan refused to go away and continued to threaten throughout the contest, but India's attacking quality proved decisive.

The atmosphere was intense from the opening pushback. India knew a draw would be enough to progress, while Pakistan, who began the match on one point, needed a victory to keep their qualification hopes alive. Despite the pressure, India started aggressively.

Dilpreet Singh registered an early effort as India pushed Pakistan deep into their own half. The pressure soon resulted in India's first penalty corner, won by Abhishek.

Pakistan survived the initial threat. But India continued attacking. In the fifth minute, Harmanpreet Singh stepped up and fired India into the lead.

The Indian captain made no mistake with a powerful strike, triggering a huge reaction from the stands. The goal immediately gave India greater control over the contest. Pakistan looked to respond on the counterattack, but India continued to dictate much of the tempo and repeatedly found ways into the circle.

Abhishek doubles India's lead

India's attacking pressure produced a second goal in the 11th minute. Abhishek brought down an aerial ball with excellent control and got the final touch before the ball deflected off a Pakistan defender and found its way into the net. India were 2-0 ahead. The opening quarter ended with India firmly in control after earning four penalty corners and constantly threatening Pakistan's defence.

But the rivalry was far from settled. Pakistan responded in the second quarter.

Pakistan pulled a goal back in the 22nd minute through Hannan Shahid. Suraj Karkera made the initial save, but India were unable to clear the danger completely. Hannan reacted quickest and powered the ball into the net. Suddenly, Pakistan had momentum.

India's response, however, was immediate. Harmanpreet once again played a crucial role in the 21st-minute move that restored India's three-goal advantage. After the initial penalty corner did not produce a goal, Rajinder kept the attack alive through quick exchanges inside the circle.

The ball eventually returned to Harmanpreet, who struck powerfully across goal to make it 3-1. Abhishek then produced one of the moments of the match. The Indian forward dribbled brilliantly through the Pakistan defence inside the circle before getting the final touch. The ball took another deflection off a Pakistan stick and ended up in the net.

India were 4-1 ahead. Pakistan, however, had one more response before half-time. Sufyan Khan stepped up for a penalty corner and his drag-flick took a deflection off Amit Rohidas before finding the back of the net. The first half ended 4-2. Six goals in 30 minutes had underlined the extraordinary pace and attacking intensity of the India-Pakistan rivalry.

Hardik Rai converts penalty stroke

India began the second half knowing that better control of possession would be required. Pakistan remained dangerous and were capable of turning the match into another tense finish. But India received a major opportunity early in the third quarter. Aditya Lalage was fouled inside the circle, resulting in a penalty stroke for India.

Vice-captain Hardik Rai stepped forward. There was no hesitation. Hardik converted from the spot to make it 5-2 and restore India's three-goal cushion.

India had opportunities to score more. Sukhjeet Singh produced a strong individual run and beat Pakistan's defence before attempting to loft the ball over goalkeeper Ali Raza, but he could not get enough on the effort. India also won another penalty corner, but Raza stood tall to deny Amit Rohidas.

At the other end, Pakistan continued to create chances.

Pakistan began the final quarter on the front foot. Hannan Shahid once again demonstrated his quality, producing excellent stick work before shifting the ball from right to left and finishing calmly. Pakistan had their third goal.

The score was 5-3, and the pressure returned. India were then reduced to 10 players after Aditya Lalage received a yellow card, leaving the team short-handed during the closing stages. With less than three minutes remaining, Pakistan won a penalty corner. It was a major moment.

India held firm. The set-piece failed to produce a goal, and India cleared the danger before seeing out the remaining minutes to secure a 5-3 victory.

The final whistle confirmed India's progression to the next stage, with the team finishing second in Group D behind England. The reward is a daunting challenge against the Netherlands, one of the strongest teams in world hockey. India will enter that contest with confidence after their performance against Pakistan. The team showed its attacking strength, scoring five goals against their arch-rivals. Harmanpreet led from the front, Abhishek delivered moments of individual brilliance, and Hardik converted under pressure.

However, the match also highlighted areas India will need to improve. Pakistan scored three goals and repeatedly found ways to stay in the contest. Against the Netherlands, defensive discipline and control of possession will become even more important.

For now, though, India can celebrate. The latest chapter of the India-Pakistan rivalry delivered eight goals and relentless drama.

India got the result. Pakistan produced a spirited fight.

And the World Cup journey moves on, with the Netherlands waiting next.
