India Begin AHF Junior Asia Cup Title Defence With 14-0 Rout of Indonesia

India's Junior Men's Hockey Team made an emphatic statement at the AHF Junior Asia Cup 2026, launching their title defence with a spectacular 14-0 victory over Indonesia in their opening Pool A encounter in Moqi, China, on Saturday.

The five-time champions showed their quality from the opening whistle, overwhelming Indonesia with relentless attacking pressure and maintaining control throughout all four quarters. Prabhdeep Singh led the scoring charge with five goals, while captain Anmol Ekka and Ajeet Yadav also produced outstanding individual performances, contributing four and three goals respectively.

With 12 of India's 14 goals coming from the trio, the defending champions immediately established themselves as one of the teams to beat in the tournament.

India's attacking intent was evident from the opening minutes as they repeatedly entered the Indonesian circle and created opportunities.

The breakthrough arrived in the fifth minute, when Prabhdeep Singh found the back of the net to put India ahead. Just three minutes later, Harpal doubled the advantage as India quickly established control of the contest.

Indonesia struggled to cope with India's pace, movement and pressure. The Indian defence also ensured that their opponents found very little space to create meaningful opportunities, allowing the five-time champions to finish the opening quarter with a comfortable 2-0 lead. India's advantage could have been even greater, but their dominance was already clear.

The second quarter saw India accelerate further.

Captain Anmol Ekka opened his personal account in the 16th minute, converting a penalty stroke after Indonesia were penalised. Ajeet Yadav then joined the scoring four minutes later to make it 4-0.

Prabhdeep subsequently took over. The forward scored in the 26th and 30th minutes, completing his hat-trick before half-time. His finishing and positioning repeatedly exposed gaps in the Indonesian defence as India continued to attack with purpose.

By the interval, India had established a commanding 6-0 lead, leaving Indonesia with a mountain to climb in the second half.

Anmol's penalty-corner masterclass

There was no let-up from India after the restart. The defending champions continued to dominate possession and territory, while their penalty-corner execution added another dimension to their attack. Anmol was particularly influential from set-pieces. He converted penalty corners in the 35th and 42nd minutes, taking his tally to three goals and pushing India further ahead.

Prabhdeep then struck once more before the end of the third quarter, taking his individual tally to four and India's advantage to 9-0. At that stage, the contest was effectively decided, but India showed no signs of taking their foot off the accelerator.

The fourth quarter produced the most devastating spell of India's performance, with the defending champions scoring five more goals. Anmol completed his four-goal haul in the 51st minute, before Prabhdeep found the net again just a minute later to bring up his fifth goal of the match. Ajeet Yadav then completed his hat-trick in emphatic fashion, scoring twice in the 53rd minute as India's lead surged to 13-0.

The final goal arrived in the 59th minute when Ashu Maurya converted from a penalty corner to complete the extraordinary 14-0 scoreline. The goal distribution highlighted India's attacking variety, with the team scoring nine field goals, four penalty-corner goals and one penalty stroke.

A statement victory for defending champions

Beyond the sheer margin of victory, India's performance offered plenty of encouragement at the beginning of their title defence. Prabhdeep's five-goal haul earned him the Player of the Match award, while Anmol demonstrated his importance both as captain and as a set-piece specialist. Ajeet's hat-trick further underlined the depth of India's attacking options.

The result also immediately gave India a significant advantage in Pool A. With three points from their opening match, India are level with Japan and South Korea but sit at the top of the group on goal difference. Indonesia, meanwhile, suffered their second consecutive defeat after losing 0-9 to South Korea on Friday. They remain fifth in Pool A, while Chinese Taipei are fourth after their 0-7 defeat against Japan.

For India, however, the focus will quickly shift towards maintaining this momentum. A 14-goal opening victory has set an extremely high benchmark, but the defending champions will know that the tougher challenges will arrive as the tournament progresses.

Having lifted the title in the previous edition, India have arrived in China with the ambition of retaining their crown. Their opening performance suggests that the five-time champions are wasting no time in making that objective clear.

Fourteen goals, a clean sheet and three points India's title defence could hardly have started in more commanding fashion.
