India Begin AVC U18 Girls' Volleyball Championship with Defeat to South Korea, Taiwan Up Next

India's campaign at the AVC U18 Girls' Volleyball Championship 2026 began with a challenging test as the young side went down in straight sets to one of Asia's strongest volleyball nations, South Korea, in their Pool D opener.
The Korean side showcased its quality throughout the contest, securing a 25-14, 25-18, 25-16 victory to start its campaign on a winning note. While the result did not go India's way, the tournament is still in its early stages, and the Indian girls will now look to regroup quickly ahead of crucial fixtures against Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) and Vietnam over the next two days. For a young squad competing at the continental level, the championship remains an important opportunity to gain experience against Asia's elite volleyball nations while continuing their long-term development.
South Korea entered the tournament as one of the favourites in the competition and demonstrated exactly why against India. The Koreans controlled the match from the opening set with disciplined serving, efficient attacking and strong defensive organisation. India struggled to match their pace early on, allowing South Korea to take the first set comfortably by 25-14. The Indian side showed signs of improvement during the second set, competing more effectively and reducing the scoring gap. However, South Korea maintained control during the crucial points to close the set 25-18.
The third set followed a similar pattern. India continued to fight for every point and displayed encouraging resilience, but South Korea's superior execution in attack and defence proved decisive as they completed the match with a 25-16 victory. Although the scoreline reflected Korea's dominance, the experience of competing against one of Asia's strongest youth teams will be valuable for India's young players as the tournament progresses.
India will be aiming to improve upon its recent performances at the AVC U18 Girls' Volleyball Championship. The team finished 8th in 2018, before placing 10th in 2022 and 12th in the previous edition in 2024. The current squad enters the championship hoping to halt that downward trend and compete more consistently against the continent's leading nations. The tournament provides an important benchmark for India's age-group volleyball programme, with many of these players expected to progress into the junior and senior national teams over the coming years.
Despite the opening defeat, India's campaign is far from over. The team now faces two important Pool D fixtures that will significantly influence its standing in the group.
India will take on Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) on July 2 before facing Vietnam on July 3. Both matches offer opportunities for the Indian side to bounce back and build momentum. Victory in either fixture would not only improve India's position in the standings but also provide the young squad with valuable confidence heading into the later stages of the competition.
Elsewhere on the opening day, several of Asia's leading volleyball nations made strong starts to their campaigns. Australia opened Pool B with a convincing straight-sets victory over Uzbekistan, winning 25-17, 25-22, 25-19. In another impressive performance, Kazakhstan comfortably defeated Hong Kong, China, taking the match 25-3, 25-23, 25-15. One of the most competitive contests of the day came in Pool C, where the Philippines registered a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Iran.
After winning the opening set 25-19, the Filipinas dropped the second before recovering strongly to claim the third and fourth sets and secure a memorable opening victory. The Philippines will now face one of the toughest assignments in the tournament when they take on Japan in their next pool match. The early results underline the depth of competition at this year's championship, with every victory likely to play a crucial role in determining qualification for the knockout stages.
For India, tournaments such as the AVC U18 Championship are about much more than immediate results. Competing regularly against countries like South Korea, Japan, China, Chinese Taipei and Kazakhstan provides invaluable exposure to higher standards of international volleyball. These experiences help young athletes develop technically, tactically and mentally while preparing them for future challenges at the junior and senior levels.
Indian volleyball has made encouraging progress in recent years, particularly through increased participation in international competitions and the growth of domestic structures. The U18 programme forms an important part of that development pathway, giving talented young players the opportunity to compete against Asia's best at an early stage of their careers.
The focus now shifts to India's second Pool D encounter against Chinese Taipei, a match that carries significant importance for the team's campaign. After facing one of the tournament favourites in their opening fixture, the Indian players will look to take the positives from their performance and make the necessary adjustments. While South Korea proved too strong on the opening day, India's journey at the AVC U18 Girls' Volleyball Championship is only just beginning.
With two crucial pool matches still to come, the young Indian squad has every opportunity to respond, gain valuable international experience and continue its development on the continental stage.
