India Drawn with Defending Champions Italy in Historic Debut at FIVB Boys' U17 Volleyball World Championship 2026

Indian volleyball is set to create history this August as the India U17 Boys' Volleyball Team prepares for its first-ever appearance at the FIVB Boys' U17 Volleyball World Championship. The tournament will be held in Doha, Qatar, from August 19 to 29, 2026, bringing together the world's best young volleyball talent.
The landmark qualification marks a significant milestone for Indian volleyball, reflecting the steady progress of the country's youth development programme. India has been drawn in a challenging Pool B alongside defending champions Italy, Tunisia, and Romania, setting up an exciting group-stage campaign in the second edition of the championship. For Indian volleyball, qualification alone is a historic achievement. Now, the focus shifts to competing against some of the world's strongest youth teams on the biggest stage in age-group volleyball.
The 2026 edition will be remembered as a watershed moment for Indian volleyball. For the first time, India's boys' team has qualified for the FIVB U17 Volleyball World Championship, joining the world's top emerging volleyball nations. The qualification underlines the growing strength of India's youth programme and offers the country's young players an invaluable opportunity to compete against elite international opposition.
Participating at a World Championship is expected to accelerate the development of these athletes, exposing them to higher standards of competition and preparing them for future senior international tournaments.
India Faces Defending Champions Italy
India's debut could hardly be more demanding.
Following the official draw, the Indian team was placed in Pool B, where they will face:
Italy – Defending World Champions
Tunisia
Romania
Italy enters the tournament as the reigning champions after winning the inaugural edition held in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2024. The European powerhouse will once again be among the favourites for the title. Romania also qualified through the highly competitive European pathway and will provide another stern test, while Tunisia arrives as one of Africa's strongest youth volleyball nations.
For India, every group-stage match will present a unique learning opportunity while also offering the chance to create history against established volleyball countries.
The 2026 tournament will be hosted in Doha, Qatar, with matches taking place at the Aspire Ladies Hall and the Al Arabi Sports Hall. This year's championship will feature 24 teams, an expansion from the 16-team field that participated in the inaugural tournament in 2024. The expanded competition reflects the FIVB's continued investment in youth volleyball and provides more nations with opportunities to compete at the global level.
Among the 24 participating countries, 14 teams will make their debut at the championship, including India.
The 2026 edition will also introduce a new tournament format approved by the FIVB Board of Administration. The 24 participating teams will be divided into six pools of four teams, with each nation playing every other team in its group.
Following the group stage:
The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the Round of 16.
The four best third-placed teams will also advance.
From the Round of 16 onwards, the competition will follow a straight knockout format leading to the quarterfinals, semifinals and medal matches. The Round of 16 is scheduled for August 25, followed by the quarterfinals on August 27, the semifinals on August 28, and the gold and bronze medal matches on August 29. A total of 52 matches will be played during the championship.
The revised structure will also become the standard format for all junior FIVB competitions from 2027 onwards.
The championship will bring together teams from all five continental confederations. Asia will be represented by India, Pakistan, Iran, Japan, Chinese Taipei, and hosts Qatar. Europe sends a formidable contingent that includes Italy, Spain, France, Poland, Romania, Czechia, Türkiye, and Bulgaria.
South America will feature Argentina, the silver medallists from 2024, alongside volleyball powerhouses Brazil and Venezuela. The United States, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Cuba represent the NORCECA region, while Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria complete Africa's representation.
The diversity and strength of the participating nations underline the level of competition India can expect in Doha.
India's qualification is another encouraging sign of the sport's steady growth. Age-group World Championships provide young players with invaluable international exposure while creating a pathway towards senior international success. Competing against elite volleyball nations like Italy and Romania will help India's youngsters gain experience that cannot be replicated through domestic competition alone.
Regardless of the results, participation in the World Championship is expected to play an important role in the long-term development of Indian volleyball.
India enters the championship as one of the tournament debutants but also as a team eager to prove it belongs among the world's best young volleyball nations. Facing the defending world champions in the opening phase is undoubtedly a difficult challenge, yet it also presents an opportunity for India's young players to test themselves against the highest standard of international volleyball.
With history already made through qualification, the Indian U17 boys now have another objective to leave their mark on the global stage.
As the countdown to Doha begins, Indian volleyball fans will eagerly follow a team that has already achieved a landmark milestone and now has the chance to write another memorable chapter in the sport's history.
