Indian athletics witnessed one of its finest days at the junior continental level as the country's young stars produced a stunning seven-medal haul at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships 2026 in Hong Kong on Friday.

The Indian contingent collected four gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal across track, field and combined events, underlining the growing depth of talent emerging through the country's athletics system. The day's highlights included a new senior national record in women's high jump, a national U20 record in men's decathlon, India's first gold medal of the championships in race walking and another dominant field event performance in discus throw.

By the end of the session, India had firmly established itself among the leading nations at the championships.

The biggest headline of the day belonged to high jumper Pooja Singh, who rewrote Indian athletics history with a sensational clearance of 1.93m. The teenager first improved her own U20 national record by clearing 1.91m before going even higher to break the senior women's national record of 1.92m held by Sahana Kumari since 2012.

With the 1.93m effort, Pooja became the highest-jumping Indian woman in history. The performance was significant not only because of the record itself but also because it highlighted the extraordinary potential of an athlete still competing in the U20 category. Pooja entered the championships as Asia's leading U20 high jumper and left Hong Kong as India's national record holder.

The mark also surpassed the qualification standard for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, adding further value to an already historic performance.

India's second gold medal of the day came through Rahul Jakhar, who delivered one of the greatest decathlon performances by an Indian junior athlete. After leading the competition from Day 1, Rahul completed the ten-event challenge with 7185 points, shattering the previous Indian U20 national record and moving to the top of the U20 world rankings for the 2026 season. What made his performance even more remarkable was the manner in which he achieved it.

Rahul registered personal bests in seven of the ten events, showcasing consistency and versatility across two exhausting days of competition.

His campaign included personal bests in the 100m, shot put, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles and pole vault. He eventually finished more than 300 points ahead of the silver medallist. To make the achievement even sweeter for India, compatriot Upkar secured the silver medal with 6854 points, completing a historic Indian one-two finish in the decathlon. Kazakhstan's Askar Omirzak took bronze with 6774 points.

Race walker Nitin Gupta opened India's gold medal account at the championships with a commanding victory in the men's 5000m race walk. The talented youngster crossed the finish line in 19:47.49 to secure the Asian U20 title ahead of athletes from Chinese Taipei and Japan. Nitin has already established himself as one of the world's brightest young race walkers. Earlier this season, he clocked 18:54.37, the second-fastest U20 performance in world history.

After narrowly missing gold at the Asian U18 Championships last year, the Indian ensured there would be no disappointment this time.

His victory provided India with its first gold medal of the championships and set the tone for an extraordinary day.

India's fourth gold medal came through Amanat Kamboj in the women's discus throw. The young thrower produced another impressive display to add to India's rich tradition in throwing events. Her victory reinforced the country's growing strength in women's field events, where several young athletes are now consistently competing for continental honours. Together with Pooja's high jump success and Sadhana Ravi's silver in triple jump, the result highlighted India's impressive depth in field disciplines.

Sadhana Ravi contributed another medal to India's tally by securing silver in the women's triple jump. The Indian athlete recorded a best effort of 12.84m to finish second behind China's Yiqing Xie, who was the only athlete in the competition to cross the 13-metre mark with a winning jump of 13.36m.

Sadhana entered the season with a personal best of 13.08m and once again demonstrated her consistency at the continental level.

The silver medal adds another significant achievement to her rapidly growing career.

India's final medal of the day came through Neeru Pathak in the women's 400m. The quarter-miler clocked 53.23 seconds to claim bronze in a highly competitive final. Her podium finish capped another successful outing for Indian women's sprinting, while teammate Tahura Khatun narrowly missed a medal after finishing fourth. Neeru's performance ensured India collected medals across endurance, sprinting, jumping, throwing and combined events on the same day.

Beyond the medals, Friday represented something bigger for Indian athletics. The performances of Rahul Jakhar, Pooja Singh, Nitin Gupta, Amanat Kamboj, Sadhana Ravi, Upkar and Neeru Pathak showcased the depth of talent emerging in the country's junior ranks. National records were broken, world-leading marks were achieved and multiple athletes established themselves as genuine contenders for future international success.

For Indian athletics, it was more than just a successful day at the Asian U20 Championships. It was a glimpse into the future.

And judging by what unfolded in Hong Kong, that future looks exceptionally bright.
