India Open Hockey World Cup Campaign With 3-1 Win Over Wales

India began their FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Wales at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen on Saturday, August 15. 

A dominant opening quarter and another penalty-corner strike from captain Harmanpreet Singh helped India establish control before Wales pulled one goal back in the final quarter.

The result gives India an ideal start to their Pool D campaign as they continue their pursuit of a first men's Hockey World Cup medal since 1975.

Playing on India's Independence Day, the occasion carried additional significance for the Indian team. Captain Harmanpreet led the side out at the Wagener Stadium, with Suraj Karkera starting in goal and a strong attacking unit featuring Sukhjeet Singh, Mandeep Singh and Abhishek. India entered the contest with a perfect record against Wales, having won all six previous meetings between the teams. That confidence was evident from the opening whistle.

India dominate the opening quarter

India immediately implemented coach Craig Fulton's press-and-counter approach, pressing high and keeping Wales under pressure inside their defensive quarter.

The sustained pressure soon resulted in penalty corners. India earned back-to-back opportunities in the eighth minute, and Sanjay made the second one count. The defender produced a fierce strike that beat the Welsh goalkeeper and gave India a 1-0 lead.

Craig Fulton made a change in goal for the second quarter, bringing on Mohith H.S. for his World Cup debut. The young goalkeeper, who had impressed India during the Pro League, immediately faced a test as Wales began finding more space in attack.

Wales created one of their best opportunities when a long pass found Pritchard inside the circle. His shot went wide, while Mohith remained alert and applied pressure to prevent Wales from getting a cleaner opportunity. India also continued looking for a third goal.

Abhishek attempted an ambitious backhand slap in open play, but the effort missed the target. India remained dangerous, although Wales had begun showing greater attacking intent. Hardik Rai, Sukhjeet and Rajinder Singh combined during another Indian attack towards the end of the half, but the final pass failed to find its target.

Despite Wales' improved showing, India entered half-time with a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Fulton acknowledged the positive first half but also demanded improvement. “We got two goals and we deserved them. We still need to be better on the ball,” the Indian coach said at the interval.

Harmanpreet strikes again

India began the third quarter looking to extend their advantage. Hardik Rai slowed the tempo before finding Harmanpreet, with India working the ball into the striking circle.

The breakthrough came in the 42nd minute. After India finally earned their first penalty corner of the third quarter, Harmanpreet once again took responsibility. Wales' Jacob was penalised for breaching the five-metre mark, handing India the set-piece opportunity.

The Indian captain made no mistake. His drag-flick found the net and gave India a 3-0 lead. It was another example of Harmanpreet's importance to India's attacking structure, particularly from penalty corners. India ended the third quarter three goals ahead, although Wales were beginning to show more attacking intent.

The final quarter brought greater urgency from Wales. With seven minutes remaining, Wales earned their first penalty corner after Amit Rohidas was penalised for a backstick.

The opportunity gave Wales a chance to reduce the deficit, but Mohith produced a brilliant save to preserve India's three-goal advantage. However, Wales eventually found their breakthrough from open play. Sam Welsh scored Wales' first goal of the World Cup, reducing India's lead to 3-1.

The goal gave Wales renewed belief, but India managed the remaining minutes effectively and protected their advantage. The final whistle confirmed a 3-1 victory for India.

Strong start to India's World Cup campaign

India's victory was built on an outstanding opening quarter, efficient penalty-corner execution and important goalkeeping contributions.
