India’s Road to LA 2028 Begins: Full Squad, Fixtures and Olympic Stakes at AVC Men’s Volleyball Championship

The road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games begins for India’s men’s volleyball team on September 5, when they take on China at the AVC Men’s Volleyball Continental Championship 2026 in Japan.

The tournament runs from September 4 to 13 in Fukuoka prefecture, with 12 of Asia’s leading teams competing for the continental title and, more importantly, the first Asian berth at the LA 2028 men’s volleyball tournament apart from hosts USA.

For India, the assignment is an imposing one. They have been placed in Pool B alongside China, four-time Asian champions Iran and New Zealand, meaning there will be little room for error from the very beginning. India enter the championship with momentum after finishing third at the AVC Volleyball Cup earlier this year, but this tournament presents a substantially bigger prize. The Asian champions will qualify directly for the 2028 Olympics, while all three medal-winning teams will earn qualification for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup.

India will be led by a squad featuring players across the setter, middle blocker, outside hitter, opposite hitter and libero positions.

The squad will have to combine attacking efficiency with defensive discipline to negotiate a difficult Pool B. Against physically strong teams such as China and Iran, India's reception and blocking will be particularly important, while their ability to convert points in long rallies could prove decisive.

India's campaign begins against China on September 5 at 10:00 AM IST.

It is a challenging opening fixture against a team with a rich continental history. China are three-time Asian champions, having won the title in 1979, 1997 and 1999, and have collected 15 medals at the Asian Championship. A strong start against China would immediately put India in contention for one of the two automatic quarterfinal spots from Pool B.

The opening match will also provide an early indication of how India’s current group of players can cope with one of Asia’s established volleyball powers.

India vs Iran: September 6, 6:30 AM IST

Barely a day later, India face arguably their toughest pool opponent.

Iran await India on September 6 at 6:30 AM IST. Iran are four-time Asian champions, having lifted the continental trophy in 2011, 2013, 2019 and 2021. They finished runners-up in the previous edition in 2023 and enter the competition ranked No. 19 in the world.

The short turnaround between the China and Iran matches makes squad management important. India will need to recover quickly while maintaining the intensity required against one of the strongest teams in Asian volleyball.

A victory over Iran would be a major statement for India and could significantly strengthen their chances of progressing as one of Pool B’s top two teams.

India vs New Zealand: September 8, 6:30 AM IST

India's final pool match comes against New Zealand on September 8 at 6:30 AM IST.

On paper, it represents an important opportunity to finish the group stage strongly. But India cannot afford to look beyond New Zealand, particularly in a tournament where third-place teams can also qualify for the knockout stage. The pool winners and runners-up will advance automatically to the quarterfinals, while the two best third-placed teams across the three pools will also progress.

That format gives India more than one route into the last eight, but every set could have implications for the final standings and third-place comparison.

The stakes in Japan go far beyond the Asian Championship trophy. The 2026 Asian champion will secure the first direct Asian qualification berth for the men’s volleyball tournament at LA 2028, joining the United States, who qualify automatically as hosts.

For India, that creates the possibility of ending a long Olympic wait in men’s volleyball.

However, the challenge is enormous. Japan are the defending Asian champions and the highest-ranked AVC team at No. 6 in the world. They are also the most successful team in Asian Championship history, with 10 gold medals.

Iran, China, Korea, Qatar and Australia will also have ambitions of making deep runs in the tournament. India therefore need to first survive Pool B before thinking about the Olympic berth. 

The 12-team competition will follow a pool stage, quarterfinal, semifinal and medal-match format, with the final scheduled for September 13. For India, the immediate target is straightforward: make the quarterfinals and then build momentum through the knockout rounds.

Their recent third-place finish at the AVC Volleyball Cup provides encouragement, while the current squad will be looking to translate that momentum onto the bigger continental stage.

The equation, ultimately, is simple.

Three pool matches stand between India and the knockout stage. Beyond that lies the possibility of a semifinal and final against the continent’s best teams. A medal would guarantee a place at the 2027 World Cup; winning the championship would deliver something even bigger.
